AVENGERS: ENDGAME ENCORE: What Does Marvel's Recent Re-Release Say About The MCU's Future?

When word came out that Marvel Studios and the Russo brothers had plans to re-release the finale to the Infinity Saga with additional footage and other enhancements, it was seemingly met with a divisive response among fans, this site's comment sections being case and point. The success that Avengers: Endgame Encore had during the film's return to the big screen, however, tells a much more positive story about how this decision ultimately turned out for Feige & Company.

The movie is approaching $100 Million worldwide, which may seem like tiny numbers for a Marvel film, but when we really look at the situation and notice that this is a re-release of a movie that has been available to watch for seven years and is still on streaming, those numbers are rather spectacular; especially considering that a large portion of movie-goers had already seen the film according to the nearly $3 Billion dollar box office success back in 2019.

Any way you slice it, $100 million is a lot of money, and considering it was mostly profit, it's more than enough to impact the decisions of future Marvel Studios releaaes. For comparison, DC's latest release, Supergirl, only made $126 million during it's entire theatrical run. Even The Marvels only made $206 million during its entire theatrical run on a budget of $374 million. For Avengers: Endgame Encore to not carry any additional production budget and still cumulate nearly the same amount as Supergirl while the original film was readily avaialable to stream at home for most of the people buying tickets is a big sign for Marvel that they did something right. Why invest in uncertainties when re-releases offer a much clearer path to profit?

There are multiple factors at play here. Firstly, many MCU fans who have felt let down by the quality of the projects under the Marvel Studios banner after Avengers: Endgame were given a chance to relive the magic that capped off what many consider to be a nearly perfect run of releases during the Infinity Saga. Secondly, die-hard fans who were eager to see the juggernaut of a film and Tony Stark's swan song come closer to overtaking Avatar's box office had a chance to help push it closer to the competition. Thirdly, while there is no official announcement for how long Encore will remain available on the big screen, the film carries a hint of a limited time avialability for the theatrical experience. Fourthly, Infinity Vision screenings account for nearly half of the cumulative total made by the re-release.

It's worth mentioning that the four new additional scenes and extended footage were only available in IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings, which likely hiked the earnings up quite a bit, as many people attended these showings for their first taste of what's to come in Avengers: Doomsday this December, while new color grading for the movie likely played some part in assembling so many viewers so quickly.

Now, these new scenes not only changed the narrative of the original version of Endgame to fit into it's upcoming successor, Doomsday's story, but they also added new characters to the film that weren't even around when the original movie was firstly released, like Loki's Mobius, Ouroborous, Casey, and the rest of the TVA as well as Doctor Doom himself.Tony and Steve's send-offs that once capped the Infinity Saga perfectly were amended, leading into this December's big feature. While there was a slight backlash from certain fans about these amendments, the marketing effort did wonders for drumming up excitement and anticipation for the film Feige is hoping with save the MCU.

Overall, it really isn't up for debate whether this was a wise creative decision (at least until Doomsday releases) as all signs point to overwhelmingly positve results for Marvel Studios. The question becomes: what does this mean for the future of Marvel Studios and how their films will be released?

The evidence is already in place that Avengers: Endgame Encore has impacted the theatrical experience with Sony Pictures having stated that they have plans to re-release the massive summer blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day along with additional footage before the flick has even transitioned to the small screen. Brand New Day is in no condition to require such a release, as it has already shattered any expectations by webbing up 2.49 Billion at the box office since its release in July of 2026.

Still, director Deston Daniel Cretton has stated he has plans to include additional footage from the opening montage to feature even more classic villains than we already saw with the likes of Tarantula, Boomerang, Tombstone, Ramrod, and Scorpion. Deleted scenes are also said to be included featuring The Defenders' Claire Temple played by Rosario Dawson (Daredevil, Luke Cage) who had her official big-screen debut cut from the movie's original theatric release this summer. Full details of what all can be expected from this planned re-release are still unfolding.

What will this mean for other movies under the umbrellas of production companies like Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures? Will this begin a trend that sees the acclaimed Spider-Verse entries get additional screen time before Beyond the Spider-Verse concludes the saga? Is there any chance that Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire's trilogy from the early 2000s will see additional screenings before the rumored ending in Avengers: Doomsday or possibly before Secret Wars? Are there other stand-out features from the Infinity Saga such as Iron Man, Black Panther, or Captain America: Civil War that could also get this treatment without additional footage or even simply the inclusion of deleted scenes left on the cutting room floor?

Most importanly, what implications does this bear for the way final products are decided upon going forward? Can we expect directors like Anthony and Joe Russo to select a finished product with more cut footage in the future so that releases like Avengers: Doomsday Deluxe, perhaps, have a place on the big screeb to hype up their successors like Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027? And should there be a concern about the quality of these films going forward knowing that such a profit stands to be made from following suit with the success of Encore?

What are your thoughts on this matter? Did you see Avengers Endgame: Encore in theaters and how was your experience? Do you feel concern for the future of the industry or is this an isolated event? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below!
