Joe Johnston Comments Briefly On Making Captain America Relatable!

Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston talks briefly about the effort they've made to make Steve Rogers a character who audiences find it easy to look at and relate to...

As with any superhero movies these days, a lot of time has been spent focusing on how Captain America can be portrayed as a relatable character to a modern audience. Marvel Studios accomplished it with THOR (a movie which saw the arrogant Asgardian God stripped of his powers and forced to learn from humanity) and are looking to do the same with Captain America: The First Avenger as director Joe Johnston explains below.

"The transformation is absolutely key to understanding Steve Rogers as a character."

"He is essentially Everyman, a 98-pound weakling who is chosen for the rebirth program not for his physical attributes but because of who he is as a human being, with his sense of justice and compassion. It’s crucial that we know and love Steve as the kid who’s been bullied and rejected all his life so we’ll appreciate and relate to who he is as Captain America."

Be sure to head on over to Hero Complex in order to read the full article, which is entitled "Muscle Summer" and looks at the bulking up of actors for these sorts of roles.

With an all star cast which includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips, Stanley Tucci as Abraham Erskine and Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Captain America: The First Avenger will be released in 3D on July 22, later this year!

I usually dont like to see a lot of trailers for movies but Captain America needs a another one. The impact of the first one was ruined for me because of all the clips released on Twitter and the trailer was mainly comprised of photos we had already seen. I hope th new trailer include a full shot of Red Skull and we get to see Hugo Weaving speak. Cant wait for this movie though.

This approach is what's going to ensure CA:TFA is a success. All the great CBMs to date have given us time to get to know the heroes BEFORE they become heroes. Superman: The Movie, Iron Man, Spider-Man. You have to establish them as characters first, then show how these characters behave when granted incredible powers.

I have no doubt CA:TFA will be the single best CBM we'll see this year, and possibly one of the best of all time.

Maybe it'll be with Green Lantern, like the second GL trailer was with Thor? That'd be cool.

I wonder what the odds are that Marvel will try to put it with X-men. I realize that it doesn't really matter what studio makes things since GL got a trailer with Thor, but strategically, they may be able to choose to put it in there. Gl is only 2 weeks later, so if hey ca get it out then, they would probably be able to put it out for X-men and have it on both.

@LoudLon, I agree. I've never understood all the peopl who seem to hate origin stories. They are a bit formulaic, but each one has a different feel and where they go after the character is set up is important too. I really think if they do this right, audiences will love and respect Steve in a way they never thought they would.

Captain America will be a good one. Green Lantern and Captain America will be the great ones this year. There is not a doubt in my mind about my former statement. It would be great about a new trailer now. I remember when GL trailers took some time, some certain people began to say that they'd "[frick]ed up", "unsecure", "backing out", "afraid" and more dumb comments. Some insane DC fanboy will probably say exactly something like that regarding this as well but it's just dumb. Things takes time, regardless of anything. I am looking forward to a second trailer!

Well, it seems like we would have heard something about the Cap trailer with First Class by now, but who knows. That's why I was thinking it's possible to be with GL. It's a little farther away. I'd love to see the new Cap trailer with GL. :D

well probably have to wait till early/mid june for the trailer, bout a month before it comes out. just like we had to wait till early/mid may for new GL stuff. and when that time comes a couple weeks im sure well be bombarded with an over abundance of Cap. pics, footage, and interviews....cant wait for that haha. as long as marvel doesnt blow their load early on with all their footage again haha

Hoping CAP is gonna be up there with THOR and GREEN LANTERN!

2011 with them has been a golden year for cbm's!

Can't wait for this. Its going to be my favorite of the summer, I have a feeling. Johnston really seems to have gotten the character right, just like Branagh with Thor.

the lack of a second trailer has its pros & cons.

pros

- we haven't seen too much footage,so we'll get fewer spoilers unlike thor,green lantern & x-men first class.

- another trailer would hype us more,this time showing more cap vs skull action.

cons

- lack of a trailer could mean the film ain't all that,fingers crossed this comment isn't true.

@ ALmighty1080

I don't think cap will tank over seas, that's like saying Superman will tank over seas. And he's all about Truth, Justice, and the American way.

@earzmundo - "despite how cool cap looks, GL looks tons better" - That's a matter of opinion (and taste).

Now, Marvel is really TOO low-profile with this one, specially outside America, where they should have been promoting even more than Thor to increase it's acceptance.

@ALmighty1080 I have the same thought and the ppl i have talked to about this movie so far in the Uk who arnt comic book fans don't want to see it for just that reason i think it's wrong myself and i can't wait for the film. However it will do alright here don't think it will be as big a hit as thor and possibly GL but in USA it's going to sore to number 1 even if it turns out to be abit rubbish.

So what power level is Captain America gonna have, Ultimates or Marvel universe???
ClarkKentSuperman
ClarkKentSuperman - 5/30/2011, 7:30 PM
@ALMIGHTY1080 and EATMYSHIT

I Believe I read an article that said overseas they are not calling the movie Captain America: The First Avenger! They are just calling it The First Avenger! To avoid this specific reason!! I cant stand it Personally I think that changing the name of the movie just to appease people is utterly ridiculous and two if people will not go and see this movie because it is named Captain America then I dont think those are the kinda people we want watching our movies.

@Number1Wolverine

They Changed Superman movie from saying Truth, Justice and the American Way to Truth, Justice and All that Good stuff for the exact reason we are speaking about!!!! That was a big deal when the movie came out.

For the record I am obvioulsly from NY hence the name and yes I am aware that both Cap and Sups are American citizens but to be honest with you they are HEROES of the WORLD Everyday they are stopping global threats so who really everybody should just calm down realize these are FICTIONAL CHARACTERS we are gettin upset over and get ready to see the next awesome movie that will come out to keep all of us fans no matter our age wanting more!!!!!!

This is like the dumb argument about a brit playing Superman, Spiderman, and I believe Batman....WHO gives a fck? Are they less talented cause they are Brits? Does the fact that a Brit is playing this character ruin the character in someway? I dont know sometimes I think people just get bored and need something to fight over so they BTCH at anything just for the sake of btching!!! Sorry got a little carried away with my typing!! LOL!!!
