Captain Marvel Relaunch Announced At New York Comic Con As Carol Danvers Lands New Ongoing Series

Marvel Comics' new Editor-in-Chief, Stephen Wacker, attended New York Comic Con yesterday to host his first-ever "Bullpen Bulletins!" panel. His biggest announcement came when he revealed that Captain Marvel is getting a new ongoing series this May.

Written by award-winning scribe G. Willow Wilson (Ms. Marvel, Black Cat) and illustrated by acclaimed artist Rachael Stott (Fantastic Four), Wacker revealed that the new Captain Marvel was pitched as a five-issue limited series. However, he wanted to give Wilson room to tell the story she wanted, and in a promising sign of things to come, it was upgraded to an ongoing title.

The series spins out of the upcoming Avengers run by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto. Following the cataclysmic events of Avengers: Armageddon, Carol Danvers finds herself grounded like never before. To rise again, Carol will have to challenge everything she thought she knew about being Captain Marvel—and break every rule along the way.

And as she pushes herself further, a threat that has been quietly assembling in the shadows of the Marvel Universe for decades is finally ready to make its move.

No stranger to the character, following her groundbreaking work on Ms. Marvel, Wilson expressed her excitement at returning to this corner of the Marvel Universe in a video message for fans in the Big Apple.

"I’m so excited to be returning to these characters who I love so much, these readers who I love so much, and to be taking Carol on her next big adventure," she said. "I can’t wait to get started and for fans to see what we have in store for Carol and all her friends. So chin up, put your boots on. We’re going back up!"

Stott added, "So unbelievably thrilled to not only be working with one of my favorite writers, the amazing G. Willow Wilson, but also one of my absolute favorite characters. At times like these, as an artist you really have to pinch yourself, and assume that in a previous life you saved a bus load of orphans from an escaped tiger to get so lucky. Can't wait to help bring this exciting new chapter of Carol's story to life!"

Check out a new promo piece by series artist Rachael Stott and stay tuned for more about Captain Marvel in the months ahead.

@Gambito - It’s hard for me to call it cancelling anymore when even characters like Iron Man and Captain America are constantly relaunched with a new number one.

The only time Carol Danvers was great in the comics was as Binary in the X-Men issues where they fought the Brood.

The character just isn't interesting.

This will bomb again.

Just like The Marvels destroyed the Captain Marvel movie franchise.

@DocSpock - The run before last went 50 issues so I’m not sure Captain Marvel is the best poster child for this but yeah since almost every hero has a title run 10-20ish issues and then gets relaunched it’s pretty easy to go onto any article about any new run of a character and say some version of the same thing. You’ll almost always be “right”.

You have elevated picking nits to an art form.

@DocSpock - Come on man you came on an innocent little article about a title relaunch just to say it was going to be cancelled because you had to axe to grind. Everyone who reads comics in 2026 knows whether it is the X-men or Thor or the Avengers or the Hulk or Captain Marvel that when a title launches it is just a matter of time before it is “cancelled” and relaunched with a new number one. You just wanted to come here and spread sourness to the world.

Worthless character, objectively speaking. Only Captain Marvel worth a damn was Genis-Vell and Mar-Vell, the latter only in a few select runs.

I guess this means that within a couple of more issues Willow Wilson's run in the current Black Cat comic will come to an end, sucks because I was enjoying that one a lot. I'll check out what she bring in Captain Marvel and hope a new run for BC is announced soon too.

Unlike others I doubt this new ongoing will end within 10, we're talking about one of the co-creators of Ms. Marvel whose comics have lasted beyond 10 issues, even the ongoing of Black Cat managed to get past that limit so I wouldn't count my eggs before they hatch.
