The Silver Surfer is dead. Long live the Silver Surfer.

The penultimate issue of Death of Silver Surfer, a five-issue limited series by writer Greg Pak and artists Sumit Kumar and Tiago Palma, hit stands earlier this week, revealing the identity of the hero taking up the mantle.

In a surprising turn of events, Norrin bequeathed the Power Cosmic to Kelly Koh, a special agent tasked with taking him down. Kelly’s journey from alien hunter to cosmic hero is completed in next month’s finale, Death of Silver Surfer #5.

With the Fantastic Four’s blessing, Kelly will soar through the Marvel Universe moving forward as the new Sentinel of the Spaceways. But first, she'll team up with her predecessor against an ancient universe-ending threat borne from the sins of Galactus.

"The Silver Surfer has always been famously one of Marvel's most emotionally tormented characters, and Kelly with the Power Cosmic absolutely follows in that tradition," Pak said. "But she's also got a no-nonsense, cocky, dangerous edge that makes her much less predictable than Norrin and a huge challenge to the villains—and heroes!—of the Marvel Universe."

Dontcha dare miss Death of Silver Surfer #5 to see what's next for both Norrin and Kelly -- and the Power Cosmic," the Planet Hulk writer concluded.

Marvel Studios introduced a female Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, with Julia Garner taking on the role of Shalla-Bal. She's Norrin Rad's love interest in the main Marvel Universe, but served as the Silver Surfer alongside him in the alternate future Earth X (not to be confused with Peacemaker's Earth-X).

Kelly Koh, meanwhile, is a newly created character. A S.H.I.E.L.D. academy graduate and a former S.W.O.R.D. operative, as a member of B.A.N., she was tasked with hunting down and killing the Silver Surfer.

Only time will tell how much staying power Kelly has, but this looks to be a deliberate move on Marvel Comics' part to bring the Marvel Universe more in line with the MCU.

Below, you can check out interior art from Death of the Silver Surfer #5, along with an original design sheet by Sumit Kumar.

@dragon316 - what’s point killing him off he be eventually they all die at some point then there be two surfers or of reasons I’m starting get out of comics it’s always gooood vs bad goood always win death happens who cares they return somehow death is not permanent no more go with real world stuff.,

Wolverine comic con that was fun, venom dealt with abusive father same with Batman but Batman did it better , marvel and dc both dealt with Alcoholism but dc showed whole story physicall and emotional side of drunks was there rape situation in marvel ? There was in dc with nightwing , not one company have dealt with sexual harassment yet but Superman has dealt with unfair with army veteran , and Spider-Man did it better with twin towers

Killing-off an iconic male character only to replace them with an opposite gender counterpart (with virtually the same exact power-set) has become as much a yawn-inducing cliche' as the seemingly endless conveyor-belt of "dystopian-future" storylines from Marvel Comics (which has long since become the House Of Exhausted Ideas).

Just ignore it. Norrin will be back within a year. The major characters come back. They ALWAYS come back. 🫤

Beyond lame, screams that all creativity has died. It’s mind boggling the business decisions that get made, and that some people are supporting this garbage with their hard earned money.

I mean, I know it's only temporary but, you'd think with how well it worked with "all new" Marvel a decade ago they'd have learn this version of "death" in comics doesn't work.

A human? Meh, could have at least come up with an interesting alien to pass the mantle to.
I'm more curious about what name and laughably similar powerset she'll be given in 6 to 12 months when Norrin Rand returns from the dead and takes back the mantle. Marvel isn't big on heroes sharing names, with few exceptions such as Wasp, Captain America, Wolverine & Human Torch.

anyone else think this is just a response to the backlash of them gender swapping Surfer in the movie?

Hopefully this character lasts more than 6 issues, with a supporting role in a team series when the solo series is cancelled due to a relative lack of sales (as per tradition).

i love how all these outraged clowns are being vocal, but none of them helped support a ongoing series for norrin rad hence all the shelved attempts after the golden age of surfer books back in the 90s. there will be two surfers for sure after this couple years of story telling stint. they will try an ongoing with her first and ultimately bring back Norrin with a big shiny number 1 and back to basics approach as the tagline.
