James Gunn Reveals He's Talked To Keanu Reeves About CONSTANTINE 2, Says He Hasn't Read A Script Yet

It's been a long road for the sequel to 2005's Constantine starring Keanu Reeves to materialize. In 2022, nearly 20 years after the first film's release, it was announced that Constantine 2 was officially in development, written by Akiva Goldsman and directed by Francis Lawrence, who also directed the first Constantine. The kicker? Keanu Reeves was confirmed to be returning as the character.

Shortly after that reveal, James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as the co-heads of DC Studios. Given the studio's focus on creating a cohesive and unified universe, it put into question for some whether or not Constantine 2 was still feasible. However, in 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed the sequel was still in development. Since then, updates on it had been sparse; that is, until now. In an interview on the BobaTalks YouTube channel, James Gunn himself chimed in on the state of the project, revealing he's talked to Keanu Reeves about it:

"I've discussed it on and off. I discussed it with Keanu. So, yeah, I mean, that's a great group of guys. I like all those people a lot, I think they're talented, but I have not read any script yet, so..."

This comment comes on the heels of Keanu Reeves providing his own update on the project. Speaking to Fandango in early October to promote his film, Good Fortune, the actor was asked if there were any news on Contstantine 2. He offered an optimistic response, stating: "Yeah, fingers crossed. You know, another draft of the script came in. We're waiting. We're gonna take it to the studio. Hopefully, they like it, too."

The road to getting Constantine 2 off the ground seems to be a somewhat challenging one. In September 2024, Constantine producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated he had received a screenplay for the film. Shortly after that, speaking to Inverse in February 2025, Reeves said he and the Constantine 2 team had pitched their long-in-development sequel to DC Studios:

"We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, 'Okay.' So, we're going to try and write a script."

After that, however, Peter Stromare, who portrayed Lucifer in 2005's Constantine, stated that Reeves was unhappy with the scripts that had been delivered for the sequel. It's important to note that Reeves' thoughts on the scripts given to him could have been for previous versions of the film, prior to the development that it's experienced in more recent years. Plus, given Reeves' latest update in October, it appears he's satisfied with the latest version of the movie.

Now, while the updates on Reeves' side have been optimistic, Gunn's comments make it feel like the movie is still quite far away. Whether or not that's the case is impossible to know at the moment. For now, though, it looks like Constantine 2's slow-but-steady climb toward the big screen continues.
