James Gunn Boasts That Many "Big Actors" Want To Play BATMAN; Reveals Whether THE SUICIDE SQUAD Is DCU Canon

DC Studios co-CEO and Superman director James Gunn has claimed that he's fielding offers from many "big actors" to play the DCU's Batman, and reveals why making The Suicide Squad canon is difficult...

As work continues on The Brave and the Bold, DC fans remain eager for news on who will play the DCU's Caped Crusader. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has acknowledged that he's struggling to figure out the best tonal approach to the hero, something that's likely not helped by Matt Reeves' plans for The Batman Part II

However, despite The Brave and the Bold's struggles, it appears the filmmaker has actors falling over themselves to play the Dark Knight. Talking to IGN, Gunn confirmed that several "big actors" have approached him about suiting up as Bruce Wayne.

"Yeah, I mean, the actor who wants to... Listen, first of all, I can’t tell you the amount of big actors that have told me they want to be Batman," he shared. "I think you’d have a harder time finding actors who don’t want to be Batman. He’s the one character everyone wants to play. That’s the truth."

If that's the case, why hasn't he been cast yet? Well, we know that Reacher star Alan Ritchson is among the actors who would like to play Batman; while he'd look great in the cape and cowl, it's harder to imagine him portraying a believable Bruce.

With that in mind, even if Gunn is being approached by countless enthusiastic actors, that doesn't necessarily mean they'd be right to bring the version of Batman he's looking for to life in the DCU.

The filmmaker also spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, and confirmed that he has no intention of redeeming Peacemaker's Chris Smith in the eyes of his fellow Task Force X members from 2021's The Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, and Ratcatcher 2.

"No, not really. I don’t [hope to resume that conflict]. People are always asking me about stuff from The Suicide Squad, and The Suicide Squad is a difficult thing because it is not DCU. But there aren’t too many things in it that aren’t [DCU]. Unlike Peacemaker season one — which is completely DCU, besides the ending and one or two mentions of different things — The Suicide Squad brings up more questions than answers."

"Now, I’m not saying that those characters won’t reappear. I’m just saying that I am [already] dealing with Peacemaker’s guilt over killing Rick Flag Jr. and his repercussions for that. And that story is being told through his relationship with Rick Flag Sr. To tell it through Bloodsport, who was friends with Rick Flag Jr., would be an emotionally diminished story compared to the one I’m telling now. So it doesn’t interest me at all."

Many fans had suspected that The Suicide Squad would definitely be DCU canon, but it's clear now that's not necessarily the case. Elements of it clearly are (like Peacemaker killing Rick Flag Jr.), but trying to make it fit into the DCU timeline might be too much of a headache for Gunn.

Can we have something on lanterns 😭

Thats all I'm interested in RN.

@ClungeOfSteel - absolutely this! Everybody is so worried about Batman right now, despite having TONS of Batman since 2005. We have a chance to have a very good, live-action take on the world of the Lanterns .... and it seems no one really cares enough to bring it up...anywhere. I'll never get the nerd-world I live in 🤷🏻‍♂️

@lazlodaytona - 100% also lanterns is way ahead production wise! Give me something to get excited about, we have reeves batman at the moment! I wanna explore the wider DC universe screw the trinity updates for now.

Give a logo or a trailer or some bts Lanterns stuff ffs 😭

@ClungeOfSteel - I'm all over that. I'm not a big Reeves fan in general. I don't hate him, but I find him bland. His Planet of the Apes films were a huge letdown for me after the James Franco one.

Back to Lanterns. Green Lantern might be my next favorite after Superman. I love that world. And, of course, look no further than the 1 season Green Lantern animated series from none other than Bruce Timm. The finale had me balling like a little girl.

I can't wait for this series.

@lazlodaytona - i fell the same man. Those Planet of the apes films were well directed but they felt like they were taking too long with the story.

That animated GL series was [frick]ing great, I really hoped the DCEU would have gotten that far with GL where they could branch off into the cosmic side of the universe with the other lantern corps. Like we could have an epic trilogy of movies without having to wait for the wide DCEU to move forward.

I hope this series is great but idk man, after superman I'm just kinda unexcited for the DCU in general but I want to be proven wrong.

@ClungeOfSteel - I understand that sentiment. I thought Superman was good and it served its purpose. But, there was no "awe" factor when Supes was around. Say what you will about the original movie, Returns, and MoS, but there was a reverence towards Superman because he was the only, or first meta that became public.

Anyways, have faith in Lanterns. Gunn isn't directing it or wrote it so hopefully the others in this world can shine.

A truly "BIG NAME" will expect big money.

Jimmy Gunn will likely proceed with a more mid-level and budget-friendly pick similar to what MARVEL did with their less-than-perfect Pascal hire for Reed Richards. 🤔

@ClungeOfSteel - No Richson. His range is terrible. If he dies his hair black, he does look like Captain Mar, er, Shazam ripped straight from the page. He’s bigger than Levi (who I liked in the role, but whose performance never matched up to the kid playing Billy, and who was never jacked enough despite being in great shape for the role). Give Richson Shazam but save Bats for someone with range

That's great news on batman and a tier 1 actor, peacemaker is a shitshow abd huge mistake by Gunn to expand the universe using a tertiary character. He blew it with superman and using peacemaker, cena is a terrible actor, to connect to superman is another mistake. If he distances himself from peacemaker and suicide squad? Soft reboot, maybe dcu can get back to positive territory. Focus on trinity and primary characters, so many better stories to tell.

I mean Peacemaker season two still referenced the events of Gunn's Suicide Squad and Weasel was in Creature Commandos so something very similar to the film we saw also is DCU canon. James is basicaly only saying he won't confirm any other actors from it will return or will directly address how much of that version of that story is fully canon or what differs and will remain just non-specific references if at all beyond what we get in this season of the series.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/30/2025, 7:56 AM
@Apophis71 - exactly

If he feels there is a story there then he likely will reference something from that film or bring back a character.
RealTurner
RealTurner - 9/30/2025, 8:03 AM
@Apophis71 - Gunn slams hard between "it's totally important" and "you can watch everything in isolation." Impossible to tell which he will spout next. He just wants his cake to keep and eat it too.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/30/2025, 8:48 AM
@RealTurner - It's called marketing.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/30/2025, 9:02 AM
@RealTurner - I mean making clear if/when you can watch something in isolation is needed or you repeat the mistakes of the MCU, conversely so when something IS important and thus 'required homework'. More the point if people didn't ask dumb questions all the time you wouldn't get dumb answers but TBF James does respond oft when he need not do so.
RealTurner
RealTurner - 10/1/2025, 1:32 AM
@JackDeth - Sure. But he's marketing the same thing (Peacemaker) in both ways.
RealTurner
RealTurner - 10/1/2025, 1:33 AM
@Apophis71 - But he hasn't made it clear. He says Peacemaker ending is incredibly important for the future and the next movie, then turns around and says "but no, you totally don't need to watch it." Hmmmm. Agree he spends far too long engaing with indivudals on social media. He has a marketing department for that. The attempts to shoe-horn him in and make him the face of the brand, not sure it can work.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 10/1/2025, 5:43 AM
@RealTurner - Never said he was GOOD at specifying which is 'required viewing' or standalone but after working under someone who did near the exact opposite of almost never giving an answer to anyone I get his approach even if he oft falls way short and/or causes his own issues doing so :D

JustAWaffle - 9/30/2025, 7:54 AM
Isn't the guilt of killing Flag a direct result of The Suicide Squad film? I mean, it's hard to say it's not DCU when the events and many of the characters are in a direct continuity.

TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/30/2025, 7:59 AM
Ummm James , you know that you wouldn’t have to do the same story with Bloodsport that you are doing with Rick Flag Sr now right?.

Anyway, I do understand not making the entire movie canon due to the likes of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn being in it which raises the question if Leto’s Joker is canon & such so best to keep that movie in limbo for now and maybe reference elements of them to make those “canon” down the line if need be like Peacemaker killing Rick Flag Jr to acknowledge the existence of those moments atleast.

Liraleoxx - 9/30/2025, 8:16 AM
"If that's the case, why hasn't he been cast yet?"

Maybe, Josh, it’s just that they don’t wanna lock in an actor before the script’s done. Kinda like Mahershala Ali with Blade — he got picked ages ago and he’s still waiting for the movie to actually happen.

Peacemaker doesn't have to be redeemed in the eyes of the other Suicide Squad members. It's not the direction the show is going, but theoretically Rick Flagg Sr could have sent Bloodsport to take out Peacemaker. Although having Bloodsport pursue Peacemaker into Earth X, and the two having to work together against the Nazis would have been an interesting spin.

I don't think they'll go with too big of a name due to both the cost of the actor, as well as getting them to sign on long term. Whoever they pick as Batman will have to sign on for a minimum of 6 movies, likely even 10.

This cornball gave us a “Superman” who couldn’t even beat Homelander. I’m not looking forward to his campy ass Batman.
