SPIDER-MAN And DOCTOR STRANGE 2 Director Sam Raimi Reveals His Biggest Criticism Of Today's Superhero Movies

Promoting his new movie, Send Help, Spider-Man director Sam Raimi has revealed that he has one major issue with today's superhero movies (and it's probably not what you'd expect).

Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi made his surprise return to the world of superheroes when he helmed 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Despite the movie's exploration of parallel realities, the story being told didn't grant the filmmaker an opportunity to direct Spider-Man again. As we write this, there's still nothing to suggest he'll bring Spider-Man 4 to our screens. When it comes to Doctor Strange 3, we've heard that Benedict Cumberbatch is eager for Sam Mendes to make his MCU debut.

Promoting his new movie, Send Help, in a Reddit AMA on r/movies, Raimi was asked to share his biggest criticism of today's superhero movies. Decades after they were first released, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 still rank among the genre's best offerings, and his answer wasn't what you might expect.

"That they don't offer me more of them," Raimi replied, making it clear that his only issue is that he's being tasked to helm more comic book adaptations.

Unfortunately, Raimi didn't answer any Spider-Man 4 queries. He did, however, reveal where the inspiration for the fan-favourite Mr. Ditkovich came from.

"Elya Baskin played Mr. Ditkovich in the first three Spider-Man movies," he said. "It was the great writer Alvin Sargent who came up with his character, and Elya added so much to it. Ursula, played by Mageina Tovah, completed the comic duo, she was great to work with."

The full Q&A is worth a read if you're eager to learn more about Send Help, and Raimi explained why his experience working with Rachel McAdams on the Doctor Strange sequel is what led to him casting her as his latest movie's lead.

"Working with Rachel McAdams on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a really eye-opening experience for me. I saw how talented she was as a performer," he shared. "And because there was an alternate multi-versal version of her character, I had the opportunity to watch her create a mirrored version of the same person."

"It was so close to the original, but absolutely unique. By the time reshoots came along, there was a third version of her character. Yet another version of the same, but with a slightly different history. She played this one perfectly also. Then, when it came to her action sequences, she was so willing to commit and put everything into it! I told myself this is the actress I should be working with next," Raimi concluded.

Send Help arrives in theaters on January 30.

In 'Send Help,' two colleagues become stranded on a deserted island, the only survivors of a plane crash. On the island, they must overcome past grievances and work together to survive, but ultimately, it's an unsettling, darkly humorous battle of wills and wits to make it out alive. “Send Help” is directed by genre-bending visionary Sam Raimi and stars Oscar nominee Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien. The film is produced by Raimi and Zainab Azizi, executive produced by JJ Hook and written by Damian Shannon & Mark Swift, with original music by Danny Elfman.

I thought he did a good job with Doctor Strange 2, just felt like the PG-13 rating held it back in some ways with the darker/horror tone.

@ModHaterSLADE - Doctor Strange isn't a title that I would ever associate with an R rating.

@ModHaterSLADE - I’ve never read a DS comic where anything was gratuitous, either by violence or language.

He’s right. He should have a blank check in this genre. He revolutionized it with Spiderman 1 and 2. 2 is a Masterpiece of not only the genre, but blockbuster filmmaking. Doc Strange 2 has a lot of cool shit in it too. The kind of Raimi creativity that makes these films POP.

He should be directing a DCU Batman film. Darkman is a perfect example of why. Tons of beautiful Batman-esque imagery, plus some of the biggest, most intense action set pieces.

@MisterBones - Just four words: Batman, Arkham, and Mad Hatter.

Also, a role for Ted Raimi: Scarecrow? Jervis Techt? Dr. Arkham?

@MisterBones - you’re so wrong. If you read comics you would know Sam Raimi is trash. The first thing he did was give Peter organic webshooters, this took away a huge aspect of Peter’s character- his intellect. But Sam Raimi didn’t give a shit about Peter’s character. He also turned Supermodel/actress/club owner Mary Jane into a snaggle toothed singing waitress who cheats on Peter. He also turned the Green Goblin into the Green Power Ranger, and completely missed the mark with that 70s Venom. In Multiverse of Madness he admitted that he didn’t watch Wandavision and proceeded to destroy all the character development that was made during that show and ruined Wanda’s story, which has a much larger effect on the Marvel universe than Dr Strange when she proclaims “no more mutants”. But you sound like you just buy into whatever the general public say and don’t actually read comics so you’re clueless to all this. You’re welcome.

@Makiveli21 - Cry louder. Nobody cares. His Spider-Man movies were big successes at the box office. That matters.

@Makiveli21 - You’re a very rude, disrespectful, arrogant and obnoxious individual. Please reread your comment and take some time to reflect on that.

You’re entitled to critiquing certain creative decisions that don’t align with your preferred version or idealised interpretation of something, but the way you have written this reply to highlight these things has been absolutely awful.

Discuss like an adult you ugly individual.

@Killuminatic - I really like your post. There’s a lot of people on here who have difficulty appropriately expressing their opinion without making it sound like it’s a fact. All this is so subjective and they make it sound like these creators are vile human beings because they didn’t create a movie that the fans agree with. Some movies are hits and some are misses but in general, a movie is so difficult to make and some fans just sh*t on them and i don’t think it’s right. On a side note, did you like the raimi trilogy?

Give Raimi a dark comedy about Aliens with a 1950s setting.

I completely agree. He should do more cbms. MOM is one of the few Multiverse Saga movies I keep coming back to. More than all the others. It's frickin awesome.

Batman, Avengers, just any cbm. All the cbms, Raimi should direct all the cbms ever.

Lol , good response…

It would be cool if Raimi got a chance to do a DCU film , maybe Justice League Dark perhaps given his horror work aswell as MOM (which I liked)?.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - raimis trilogy actually isn’t my favorite interpretation of the character. Maguires spidey came
Back in the previous Spider-Man movie so that’s fine for me. I think he’s coming back in the new avengers movie so thats fine as well. For me he needs to come back but I don’t need to see his particular universe.

@epc1122 - Yeah, i'm fine with the trilogy as it is, 3 ends on quite a positive note for a movie that wasn't intended as the finale, and his subsequent returns in NWH and (hopefully) in Secret Wars should be enough. Also, considering the current state of Hollywood production, i'd be much more worried about a Spider-Man 4 made today than if it was made back then, before the (not so) Amazing reboot.

But a man can dream, gahdammit !

@OrgasmicPotatoe - I kind of think the third one was supposed to be the end of the trilogy. It made a lot of money and they were working on the fourth, but I think raimi originally planned the third one as the last one similar to the dark knight trilogy. Is the raimi universe your favorite?
OrgasmicPotatoe
OrgasmicPotatoe - 1/17/2026, 6:47 PM
@epc1122 - Certainly one of them. I was really into the MCU until Endgame, now it's just a big joke. Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy stands as the best to me, but Raimi's Spider-Man is a close second. Cap's got a pretty good trilogy too.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - you didn’t like endgame or after endgame you haven’t liked marvel? I enjoyed endgame but I’ve found marvel since then on the boring side. I’m looking forward to the next spiderman movie and avengers . First time in awhile I’m legitimately excited for marvel. For trilogies, the dark knight tops but surprisingly, the joker is the highlight for the movies. Not trilogies aside, Superman will always be my favorite 👍

OrgasmicPotatoe - 1/17/2026, 7:55 PM
@epc1122 - I liked Endgame a lot, despite its flaws. It's what came after that turned me off. I have only liked Dr Strange 2, GOTG3, NWH and Deadpool & Wolverine since then.

What did you think of the last Superman movie ? For me, Reeve is the OG, Cavill is my favourite, but I'd have to check out Tyler Hoechlin's take, he seemed nice.
epc1122
epc1122 - 1/17/2026, 8:33 PM
@OrgasmicPotatoe - I had some hope for Dr strange 2 and liked that krasinski was Mr fantastic and Stewart was the 90s animated X-men but found the movie on the slow side. Deadpool and Wolverine I enjoyed the fist time but found it on the slow side viewing it at home. No way home I liked but like Deadpool and Wolverine, with repeat viewings I just thought it was ok.

I consider myself a Superman fan and can find some joy in just about all the interpretations. I grew up with Christopher Reeve and at this point he’ll always be my number 1. I think Cavill was decent but was in movies that had a lot of issues for me. First movie was a decent start but he didn’t learn anything and was still mopey in Batman vs Superman. He took a step back to give Batman the starring role . Then in Justice league he was pretty much a cameo. I know it’s pretty divisive here but I loved Superman 25. Was it perfect? No. But it was a fun sci fi movie that was more like Superman 78. I loved Rachel as Lois and I’m excited for where they take the franchise. Tyler hoechlin in Superman and Lois is actually my favorite interpretation of Superman and Clark. There was a difference between Superman and Clark and Clark wasn’t as goofy as reeves but still corny and his Superman was confident and humble. A version that i also love that I think is underrated is the live action Superboy shows from the late 80s, early 90s. It was Superboy show but the lead actors were old enough to be Superman so it was a lot like a Superman show in the vain of the Christopher Reeve movies.
