10. METROPOLIS: Superman’s stomping ground should be based in the REAL WORLD in a similar fashion to DARK KNIGHT’S GOTHAM CITY was based on CHICAGO. Perhaps base the fictional city on NEW YORK as a city that never sleeps.

09. THE DAILY PLANET: Clark Kent’s place of employment should seem like a REAL MULTI-FORMAT MEDIA OUTLET much like CNN or THE TIMES. It should be realized as a continually busy environment with people everywhere. This should not look like a standard set, but a real news room.

08. A DECENT looking LOIS LANE: My hat’s off to Noel Neill and Margot Kidder, but Kate Bosworth gets a perpetual THUMBS DOWN for her strained portrayal of the character. The “New” Lois Lane should be a combination of just above average beauty and pit-bull tenacity as a reporter.

07. SUPERMAN DEALING WITH REAL WORLD ISSUES: The new film in the proposed Nolan produced franchise should have the title character deal with certain issues like the war on terror and other social issues as well (if only as an aside.). How would Superman deal with terrorists, suicide bombers in the Middle East while trying to appear impartial? [No more of: “Does he still stand for Truth, Justice and all that other stuff” which was implemented in the Singer film.]

06. SMARTER CRIMINALS: The audience would like to see “smarter criminals” and not continually have their hero engaged in a perpetual Cain-n-Abel like struggle with signature villain Lex Luthor. It would be great to see cinematic versions of Bruno Manheim and Inter-Gang out fitted with weapons and equipment tailor made to deal with the man of steel.

05. CLARK KENT: “No Nonsense” should be the mantra here as elements of Kent as an uncoordinated social nerd should be jettisoned altogether. Perhaps Kent should be modeled after Sam Donaldson, Edward R. Murrow & Ted Coppel. Clark Kent should be an actual Investigative Reporter when not dealing with global and national issues as Superman.

04. INTERGALACTIC / COSMIC SCOPE: The New Superman films need REAL, THREATENING VILLIANS & some equally POWERFUL allies to aid the man of steel in times of crisis when his powers will simply not suffice.

For this reason, Jack Kirby’s 4th World should be merged with this franchise. Characters like High Father could be alluded to and Orion should be a reoccurring character (Personally, I would turn James Marsden’s Richard White character into an alter-ego for Orion.).

Plain & Simple: SUPERMAN needs DARKSIED.

03. BRANIAC and DOOMSDAY: Braniac has yet to get a decent introduction to the cinematic audience. (No disrespect to James Marsters.) DOOMSDAY is kind of similar to the HULK and would make a good, physically imposing and threatening foil for the man of steel.

Perhaps, Braniac uses the mindless juggernaut as an avatar, projecting his consciousness into the creature. Threatening the world when Braniac is disabled and the beast begins razing the earth.

02. JOHN WILLIAMS SIGANTURE THEME: The youthful fanboy generation can for the most part, take it or leave it, but generation x and older identify John Williams rousing ICONIC score with SUPERMAN … period. Perhaps use the score as a framing device around another composer’s work.

… And finally.

01. THE “CLASSIC” SUPERMAN COSTUME: Singer’s idea of a muted almost burgundy colored costume left many people putt off and irritated that he would change something so well, Iconic. The studio and the filmmakers need to realize that SUPERMAN is LARGER than LIFE.

The costume does not need to be “updated”.

Note: I have an extreme dislike of Singer’s version of “Superman” but I have provided an impartial view in this article. I do feel as though Brandon Routh should be given another chance to embody the character of SUPERMAN, abet with a BETTER DIRECTOR.

Great article i agree just about all of it especially with the fact that Clark should definitely be more forceful with the Man of Steel version(Josh Byrne version) the more outgoing, great reporting, football loving version...

I think Brainiac should be the main villain with the whole technology controlling ability in the first with some standard Luthor in there...

The next could have the whole Doomsday arc for the first half of the movie with them fighting to the death and having the "Death of Superman" storyline with the multiple Superman stepping forward...

Or they could have the whole Bizarro arc in the second movie having Luthor trying to make a clone of superman go horribly wrong and having Bizarro controlled with Superman trying to help him and having a robot(Metallo) trying to kill Superman with Bizarro in turn try to help Superman...

The third could be the invasion of Darkseid...
Its really endless with the possible angles they could go with...

I agree with some points in the article, but not all:

I disagree that Superman should face real world problems. First, that would date the movie; second, Superman IV tried that and it was a failure. A being that can move around the world as fast as he can would not be so ethnocentric as to be for the "American way" any longer. He would be a hero for the planet and not someone who would try to spread American culture and politics; he would be above cultural imperialism and all that.

Superman and Clark need to be treated like different characters. Superman is the reality and Clark as the pretend person. Nolan has done this with Batman/Bruce Wayne. Wayne has a public persona as a playboy, which is not the true Bruce Wayne. I liked the Carey Grant like portrayal that Reeve did. But I agree he shouldn't be treated like a nerd ala Gerard Christopher. Not to treat Superman/Clark Kent in the traditional way would be a mistake. The differences between the characters help us to suspend our disbelief more; the glasses alone are just not enough.

I agree that they should not update the costume. I get tired of the Jay Leno "Superman wears his underwear on the outside" nonsense. The red trunks help to break up the blue in the costume. Besides, Superman's costume is known throughout the world--it has become part of who the character is.

@ alskdj agreed.

Although the costume needs some minor updating IMO, not a complete re-imagining or anything (all the components of the costume should remain, trunks and all) but maybe a different material, different shades of the colours (not the off-purple from superman returns, more of a vibrant red on a darker blue, so the insignia really stands out). The suit Reeves wore in his films worked at the time, but I think a printed nylon costume wouldn't suffice in a modern take on Superman.

Also whoever plays Supes (hopefully Routh will get a 2nd chance) needs to be muscular, not to the extent of lou ferrigno or shwartznegger, but needs to look imposing when in costume (The Spider-Man costume in Sam Raimi's trilogy had shading used to enhance the muscle deffinition, maybe the new Superman suit could use something similar)

how can you say you disliked Singer's version yet want Routh back?? i see this everywhere. casting Routh is acknowledging Singer's version as cannon. no matter how you slice it. people - stop saying you want/think Routh or welling will be Supes. it won't happen for many valid reasons. Routh wasn't even THAT good. watch SR again... i could definitely picture someone doing a way better job. open up your eyes fanboys. think outside the box. next up we're going to be getting Dean Cain suggestions... don't we want something new? Routh is not new.

and yes. the costume should be updated. god-like warriors shouldn't dress like ballerinas.

"Superman is the reality and Clark as the pretend person."

You either have not read a lot of Superman comics over the last 24 years, or you have not understood a lot of Superman comics during that time.

The Byrne reboot of the comic took away a lot of the planet juggling capabilities of Superman and, while he is still a stranger from a strange land, centered the character as Clark first and Superman second.

Clark Kent is the core of the character, his sense of duty does not come from the fact that he has powers but it instead comes how he was raised.
