THE LORD OF THE RINGS: New Details About THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM's Search For An Actor To Play Younger Aragorn

With cameras set to roll on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum this summer, it sounds like Andy Serkis is gearing up to cast Viggo Mortensen's replacement as Aragorn.

It was back in 2024 when we first learned of Warner Bros.' plans for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The first Middle-earth movie since 2014's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the story plays out before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring

Andy Serkis is stepping behind the camera to direct, and he'll also reprise his role as Gollum. Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, who wrote The Lord of the Rings trilogy, are penning the screenplay, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou (The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim).

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit director Peter Jackson, meanwhile, is producing the project, with the idea being for this to usher in a new wave of big-screen tales based on author J. R. R. Tolkien's work.

In terms of cast, Serkis and Sir Ian McKellen are the only ones currently confirmed to return (there are rumblings that we'll see Elijah Wood as Frodo), with McKellen obviously set to return as Gandalf the Grey. Now, we have updates from @theoneringnet (via SFFGazette.com) on The Hunt for Gollum's search for a new Aragorn.

As expected, Viggo Mortensen—now 67—isn't coming back, and auditions are already underway to find a younger actor to take over from him. According to the site, a reliable source for all things The Lord of the Rings, "The conversations I had over the weekend were with real people—not just anonymous names on the internet."

"Based on those conversations, auditions for Aragorn are taking place this week in London," they continue. "Aragorn is being recast, with auditions happening both in London and New Zealand." Interestingly, while established names are a possibility, Warner Bros. and Serkis are also considering "unknown actors."

As for any of the popular fan casts you might see on social media, it would be wise to keep expectations in check. "I’ve been told by people close to casting that Ben Barnes and Sebastian Stan are considered too old for the vision of Aragorn. The film reportedly takes place in the 20 years prior to 'The Fellowship of the Ring,' acting as a bridge between 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings.'"

While the casting process isn't likely to be quick, this isn't the first time we've heard about a young Aragorn being cast. Hopefully, we'll get an official update soon, especially as there's a good chance whoever is chosen will play the character in other Middle-earth-set movies being developed.

Recently, McKellen shared a big update about The Hunt for Gollum when he said, "It's going to start filming in May. It's going to be directed by Gollum, and it's all about Gollum. But I'll tell you two secrets about the casting. There's a character in the movie called Frodo and another character called Gandalf, and apart from that, my lips are sealed."

Stay tuned for updates on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum ahead of its December 17, 2027, release as we have them.

As long as it’s not Jesse Eisenberg, Jared Leto, Liam Hemsworth and/or Bella Ramsey I think I’ll be ok with whomever.

I’m actually happy about this. I would prefer a recast to terrible deaging. Hopefully they can get Lee Pace back again.

Interesting…

Honestly my choice for a “young” Aragorn would have been Jamie Dornan but he’s about the same age as Sebastian Stan & Ben Barnes so if they are considered too old for the role then he is likely too also.

Regardless , I think it would be best to have a lesser known/unknown actor as the character then an established name but we’ll see.

I wish I had more interest in this then I actually do as of now since I like the apparent focus on Aragorn as he is tasked to go on this adventure to find Gollum by Gandalf but the focus on the latter gives me pause since I feel he is best as a supporting character thus making him a main one runs the risk of having him be more annoying then he already is…

Anyway I also hope it turns out well because while I like Serkis as an actor , his directorial efforts haven’t really impressed me tbh!!.

Only actor that comes to mind as comparable to turn-of-the-century Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn today is Michael Fassbender.

I love all Tolkien's books, and I love the LoTR movie trilogy. I put up with the hugely bloated Hobbit trilogy. I hated the rotten Prime show. I utterly reject this. Call me when they get around to doing the Silmarillion.

@DocSpock - doubt it'll ever happen. Not a linear story and the estate wont part with those rights (thankfully)

@SteviesRightFoo -

I know it's likely impossible, at least until someone comes along who if capable of doing what Jackson did with LoTR.

Imagine Nolan making a trilogy of the Silmarillion. Spoo.

Yeah, it'll never happen, but I have fun thinking it. SPOO!

@DocSpock - Considering you put up with them, and don't straight up hate them, have you tried the fanedits of the Hobbit trilogy ?

There's two out there that greatly improve the whole thing. Cuts out the bloat, puts the focus back on Bilbo and sticks much closer to the book. I cannot recommend them enough.

Could you give me more info please? I respect most of your opinions, and I'd like to check that out.

Thanks!

@DocSpock - The two I have found are the M4 Book edit and Maple Films edit. They are both around 4-hours cuts of the three movies all smashed together, with an intermission in the middle. They both have little differences in what they cut out and leave in, but they both amount to a similar cut. Tauriel is reduced to a nameless background elf, Legolas is nothing more than a cameo, a serious reduction of Dwarven silliness, no silly bird-poop Radagast. They just feel so much better than the bloated full movies, and much closer to the book.

The Maple Films one also has a companion film called Durin's Folk & the Hill of Sorcery. It's made up of the Gandalf side-quest to Rhudaur/Dol Guldur and much of the Dwarve's backstory. It's quite nice, but if you're looking to cut out the bloat, you might wanna lave that aside for now.

Thank you! I am a Tolkien nut, and I will definitely check this out tomorrow. I'm about to fall asleep tonight.

He’s 20 years younger than what he was in the original movies, so recasting makes perfect sense. Wouldn’t Frodo be a baby or non existing. Gandalf has looked the same forever.

@Thebronxknight - isn’t it funny that Aragorn is 80 something in the lord of the rings and here he would be in his 60s, but Viggo (in his 60s) is now too old?

I honestly kinda wish that if they are gonna do more LOTR films , they do a new & fresh story like War of The Rohirrim (which I thought was decent) or even Rings of Power…

Like how about Beren & Luthien?.

If Viggo isn’t returning, which I can understand why he may not want to, then my interest in this project has drastically reduced. Not saying they can’t make a good film of it still, but it’ll be.. .odd, to say the least with him absent and someone else trying to fill his shoes.

Tolkiens works and Jackson films are as special to me as anything could be. If Viggo is being recast im done with this film already. Also, the hunt for gollum portion of the fellowship book is less than 2 pages long which means they'll be making stuff up on the fly to pad the run time. Alarm bells are going off here

Hold up...everything reported prior to this said the movie showed us Gandalf and Aragorn looking for Gollum DURING the events of Fellowship. So now it's 20 years PRIOR to that? WTF are they doing?

If they are going to recast Aragorn, they should recast everyone else too.

Plus most people (like me) probably have zero interest in a prequel about Gollum.

Take place prior to Fellowship of the Ring? I thought it took place during the time Gandalf goes to Minis Tirith to investigate the Ring. Guess timeline's different.

Anyway, I still don't see the appeal of this as a live-action movie. Gollem isn't that interesting. Animation like War of the Rohirrim would work better I think.
