MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Star Jared Leto Donned Blue Body Suit As Skeletor; Will Have "Shakespearean" Voice

New details have been revealed about Jared Leto's portrayal of Skeletor in Masters of the Universe, including how much time he spent on set and the Oscar-winner's voice performance.

Jared Leto is an Oscar-winning actor (for his role in 2013's Dallas Buyers Club), but his leading man status has been called into question following starring roles in big-budget flops like Morbius and TRON: Ares.

It's probably for the best, then, that he'll be hidden behind a CG skull in this summer's Masters of the Universe reboot. Until now, we've not really known how much time Leto spent on set, but the latest issue of Empire confirms that he spent time suited up as the villainous Skeletor.

In an excerpt shared from the magazine by He-Mania.com (via Toonado.com), it's said that "though Leto is playing the character, the actor is all but invisible: his body is swathed in a blue-skinned muscle suit, and his face is entirely replaced with a CG-animated skull."

Beyond Skeletor's iconic look, Leto will obviously be lending his voice to the character. However, he won't be emulating the high-pitched voice performance of legendary actor Alan Oppenheimer in the 1980s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series.

Instead, Leto will be following the footsteps of Frank Langella's Skeletor in the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie. In that, the actor delivered a Shakespearean-inspired performance that the Suicide Squad star will be emulating in Travis Knight's reboot.

"And while [Jared Leto's] vocalisation avoids rehashing the memorable nasal whine of the original cartoon Skeletor (voiced by Alan Oppenheimer)," reads the excerpt, "it doesn’t sound like his own, having instead a dry, Shakespearean timbre."

Elsewhere in the magazine, Knight revealed that previous versions of the movie's script depicted Skeletor as a man wearing a golden skull mask. "I said, 'F**k that shit. Skeletor has a skull face,'" he stated. "That’s just the way it is. It’s a living, talking, emoting skull, and that’s that."

With that decided on, the filmmaker knew he had to get the character right. For him, Leto was ultimately the perfect choice to help with that, and it sounds like fans can expect a very timely portrayal of the villain who desires control of Castle Grayskull.

"Skeletor was a really interesting villain," Knight shared. "He looked cool. He was scary. He was funny. He was insecure. And then of course he had this distinctive voice."

"I wanted someone to craft their own version of that. Jared approached us, because he loves Skeletor and has his own history with the character. He wanted to swing for the fences," he continued. "And ultimately, we landed on something that I’m really happy with. Skeletor’s kind of the embodiment of toxic masculinity."

In Masters of the Universe, Director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia, where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto).

To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

Written by Chris Butler and Aaron Nee & Adam Nee & Dave Callaham, and directed by Travis Knight, Masters of the Universe stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Charlotte Riley, Kristen Wiig, Jared Leto, and Idris Elba.

Masters of the Universe opens in theaters on June 5, later this year.

I am excited for this to be good. Really want some Voltron footage soon.

@ModernAudience - Hey man, as a child of the 80s I want this to be great, I want Voltron to be great, I want a live action Thundercats movie, and where the hell is that Transformers/Gi JOE crossover movie that was teased at the end of "TF: RotB"? I don't care if we need to get Bay back to direct that shit (he's probably the perfect person for it given his previous TF movies), let's make it happen Capt'n!

@ModernAudience - I grew up on these cartoons so I hope they’re awesome!

Shakespeare was known for his “Toxic masculinity”, lol. That and the “He-Him” Man stupidity are the only red flags here.

@StSteven - why there hasn't yet been a RoboCop vs Terminator movie blows my mind. With all of the failed sequel/reboot attempts they might as well Alien vs Predator the thing.

@Bucky74 - I think the He Him was a timely joke, making fun of the corpo gobbling of the modern stupidity that is the gender craze brought on during the lockdows of covid. And while being a normal man was demonized during that same era as toxic masculinity, I do feel toxic Masculinity IS a thing and if anyone would have it, it would be a yoked skull faced dude looking for ultimate power 😂. I'm stoked for this flick.

@ModernAudience - All good points, and I did like everything else in the trailer. Test screenings for Voltron are supposedly very strong and it went from streaming to theatrical.

It is great to see my childhood favs brought to life but I hope they aren’t ruined by modern stupidity/insanity.

@TheRevelation - same here. There's so many questions I have a out this adaptation. An actor from a cheesey show I like is one of the pilots. Ezekiel from the Librarians.

@lazlodaytona - Terminator vs. RoboCop would be epic, however with Paramount Skydance owning the rights to Terminator and Amazon MGM owning the rights to RoboCop, I don't see that happening any time soon, sadly.
StSteven
StSteven - 2/18/2026, 5:19 PM
@ModernAudience - Yeah, I'm excited for Voltron as well, although I haven't seen anything from it yet, so likewise fingers crossed that they stick to the original and not mess with what works, just make it more epic.

As far as the TF movies goes, I'm a hardcore lifelong TF fan (got an entire spare bedroom full of thousands them MISB and a Deception tattoo on my shoulder), and overall I've enjoyed them all, although some more than others. The first one ('07) still holds a special place for me because it was the first one, and the ones that came afterward kinda lessened in quality (although finally seeing my beloved DInobots in live action was definitely a highlight), but then I thought that things really picked up again with "Bumblebee".

Ultimately, given the ending of "RotB" it seems like a TF/GI JOE crossover would be the next logical way to go and a good way to reinvigorate interest in the franchise (and like I said above, like him or not, Bay is probably the best guy to helm something like that).

I will say that I'm really disappointed that "TF:One" didn't do better at the BO, because I thought it was great (and so did the audience and critics) and I know that they had a trilogy planned, so it would be a shame to not have that happen.

My real dream, however, would to see a remake of the '86 "TF:TM" done with updated graphics like they used in "TF:One" (live action would be even better but it would just be too expensive). So fingers crossed that they make this happen one day, and this year would be a great time to announce something like that being as it's the 40th anniversary of "TF:TM".

@StSteven - well, Skynet can fix that. Send a t-800 back to when the person who created the pathway for there to one day be an Amazon MGM company and kill his baby ass. Then, send a Terminatrix back to become CEO of Paramount Skydance, buy up the RoboCop rights, and kill any threat that gets in the way of that happening.

Problem solved

ModernAudience - 2/18/2026, 6:23 PM
@StSteven - transformers one was so dang good. I unfortunately watched it at home when it came to streaming. Bummer we won't get another one
StSteven
StSteven - 2/18/2026, 9:36 PM
@lazlodaytona - Just to be clear, when you say "Terminatrix" are you referring to a dominatrix Terminator, or a new robotic member of the K-Pop Demon Hunters band Huntrix that hasn't been announced yet? I ask because one I would need to tell my little girls about and the other... eh, not so much.
StSteven
StSteven - 2/18/2026, 9:39 PM
@ModernAudience - Yeah, it really was. And never say never. I saw something recently about Paramount's planned movie releases coming up and TF was definitely up there, although whether or not it would be live action (probably) or animated (or potentially on of each) remains to be seen. After all, TF remains one of Paramount's largest grossing franchises, so they're not going to walk away from that any time soon. Stay tuned... :)

@StSteven - the chick from T-3.
Now that I think about it, everytime Skynet sends a terminator back, it fails. Every.Time.

Maybe my plan is a waste 🤷🏻‍♂️
StSteven
StSteven - 2/20/2026, 4:37 PM
@lazlodaytona - Ah, gotcha. So definitely the former vs. the latter. Yeah, Skynet keeps failing which makes me think that Cyberdyne is really just a rebranded X and Skynet is just a rebranded Grok/Mecha Hitler. Makes sense. The obvious solution to this is Jeff Bezos and a penis shaped rocket to get help from... "Amazon Women on the Moon"! Apophis71 - 2/18/2026, 6:51 AM
@incredibleTalk - I'd kinda be worried if it came in above 85% as the original was cheesy fun simplistic storytelling with the whole message bit at the end. Turning that into something overly serious/complex such that it got off the scale praise I'd kinda be this isn't He-Man thus could fail for old farts who grew up with the first animated series and kids going to watch it.

I mean audience scores could end up in the 90's and that is fine and fair but expecting critic scores somewhere in the 70's if it is what I would want from this adaption and wouldn't be overly concerned if critic scores were lower than that as long as fans love it.

STILL concerned about Skeletor, I'm done with Leto and never thought he was a great actor, not seen the thing he got an Oscar for but no role I've seen him in was worthy of any award considerations and at least half of them plain bad (without getting into the alleged stuff some think he should be cancelled for offscreen). Beyond that nervousness still have high hopes from what I've seen and read thus far that it should have more than enough of what I loved of the original and enough new to make it interesting.
TheRevelation
TheRevelation - 2/18/2026, 8:18 AM
@Apophis71 - That's...my only real concern at the moment. I can appreciate Leto's passion, and I have seen his Oscar film. There are lots of great actors that have no Oscars, Emmys, etc. Some that do, which make you go wtf? I guess anyone can get hot and deliver the goods though, and I don't hate on anyone that has one. Sometimes it feels like the Grammys though. I'm concerned though because they seem to be saying what some are thinking by not revealing his voice yet. It's early though, but still interesting we've seen nothing on the villain side yet other than them in action.

@TheRevelation - Oh I can appreciate his passion in his art, acting and music, just with both it has been rare he really hits the mark but when he does he REALLY does, when he doesn't it is very meh.

Cool , Frank Langella as Skeletor is the best part of the 80’s film so Leto taking apparent inspiration from that is nothing but a good thing imo!!.

A dry timbre usually means unemotional and hoarse so I could see him playing it almost like a whisper or at a lower vocal quality such as this…

?si=Bb0LpqN31dFbB_M_

I just hope “Shakespearean” means he is being theatrical with the performance rather then understated and not that he’s just going to have a British tinge to his accent.

Anyway besides my concern about Leto’s Skeletor , I am looking forward to the film since it seems really fun!!.

BestAtWhatIDo - 2/18/2026, 8:48 AM
This movie looks and probably will be fun, but every Jared Leto performance that is hyped up this much ends up being dogshit. If they wanted a Shakespearean performance, they could've cast a Shakespearean actor . . . like oh, say, Frank Langella in the 80s.
