Lionsgate and Blumhouse officially announced that a new The Blair Witch Project movie was moving forward during 2024's CinemaCon presentation, and we finally have an update.

This first teaser doesn't include any footage, but does feature those creepy Twanas (stick charms) that the titular witch used to torment the protagonists of the original movie.

The untitled Blair Witch remimaging is set to hit theaters on September 24, 2027.

The synopsis reads: "The horror masterminds at Blumhouse Atomic Monster (Obsession, The Conjuring, Backrooms) remind us how scary the woods can be with this groundbreaking new chapter of The Blair Witch Project."

The 1999 film ushered in a new era of found footage horror, and is still widely viewed as one of the scariest movies of all time. Unfortunately, a direct sequel (Book of Shadows) and Adam Wingard's tepid 2016 revival failed to recapture the visceral chills of the original, and the franchise has stalled since.

“I have been incredibly fortunate to work with Jason many times over the years. We forged a strong relationship on The Purge when I was at Universal, and we launched STX with his film The Gift. There is no one better at this genre than the team at Blumhouse,” said Lionsgate film chair Adam Fogelson. “We are thrilled to kick this partnership off with a new vision for Blair Witch that will reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation.”

Jason Blum gave credit to the original Blair Witch for helping to pave the way for his own found-footage hit Paranormal Activity, saying, “I don’t think there would have been a Paranormal Activity had there not first been a Blair Witch, so this feels like a truly special opportunity and I’m excited to see where it leads.”

YouTube horror space filmmaker Dylan Clark is set to direct, with original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams on board as executive producers alongside the first movie’s directing team of Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick and Gregg Hale.

Found video footage tells the tale of three film students (Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams) who've traveled to a small town to collect documentary footage about the Blair Witch, a legendary local murderer. Over the course of several days, the students interview townspeople and gather clues to support the tale's veracity. But the project takes a frightening turn when the students lose their way in the woods and begin hearing horrific noises.

This could work if instead of found footage, they do livestreams.

They need to hire talented new directors who’ve proved themselves with Indie horror hits like they’re doing with the Evil Dead franchise

@Bucky74 - 100% - the horror genre can be notoriously low budget for the right reasons - lower the budget, bigger the scares in my eye, they stay true to the intention and make it happen without the spectacle of vfx/sfx.

independent or studio horror films with indie directors who are in touch with modern media and have cut their teeth in it, is the future of horror cinema -"Talk to Me" was one of the most unsettling things I've ever watched. It left me with afterthoughts, which I hate but a great kudos to the film itself.

The days of big studio execs calling the shots for horror are done. We just had Backrooms and Possession.. I haven't seen Leviticus yet, I've heard it's great. A Blair witch remake (by a studio) screams vomit unless they spot the current cinematic trend and hire the right talent to make and bake it. The concept is awesome. It won't help their execution without some clever and twisted minds devising it

@CaptainEire - Exactly. Most of the directors they’re using for the Evil Dead franchise have made some awesome info hits like Infested (a must see if you missed it) and it’s showing at the BO. I do love how the big studios are being upstaged by these small indie directors like with the films you’ve mentioned.

@Bucky74 - Indi hits

@Bucky74 - I love that independent films success storiescan potentially make them up their game. I just hope they learn why those movies are connecting.

I haven't seen Infested... or heard of it to be honest. Will I have to send you an invoice for trauma therapy if it's good?

@MotherGooseUPus - The first was good for its time but it hasn’t aged well. That said, it did basically create the found footage horror genre. Single-handedly

The first was good, but the sequels were just trash. Hope they can make it feel fresh.

I remember watching the original at the Empire in Leicester Square on the opening weekend. When it ended, there was this hushed silence... Followed by about 400 people simultaneously spouting variations of "...is that it?!" I didn't rate it much, but it did pave the way for a lot of movies. Paranormal Activity was okay (with the original ending), but the idea of what you could do with found footage as a gimmick really peaked with Cloverfield and Chronicle.

Man I really liked Blair Witch 2016. Obviously nothing as good as the original but I thought it opened the door for a lot of wild ideas for the universe. The lore is cool so im hoping this is good.

The original is one of the first viral marketing campaigns that tricked a lot of dumb early internet users into thinking the footage was "real". 😝

The movie itself is beyond amateurish and is just a camera being shaken around in the woods. There is no actual story to speak of and nothing is revealed at all, except a pile of sticks.
It was a really good bait and switch that scammed a lot of suckers.
Not sure why it would need a remake, other than the fact that there's still millions of suckers out there. 🤣

@Feralwookiee - People are okay to like different things. Not sure why that makes them a sucker.

Marketing is marketing. The entire goal is to get you to use or watch whatever it is. You do it too.

Interesting that Heather isn’t taking part.

Said something along the lines of refusing to sign over her soul. Wonder if they are wanting to use her likeness well down the road.

For those too young to know, the first film was an absolute phenomenon. They sold it as being completely real (this was before found footage films took off). They even had a documentary about this legend that aired on the Discovery Channel and everyone thought they were literally watching these kids die.... then the weekend after it opened they showed up on TRL and let the cat out of the bag. It was BRILLIANT viral marketing, before such a thing even existed.

@JackDeth - speaking of brilliant marketing, when the Ring came out, a friend of mine kept saying that he saw the short film in the movie, before. He said he randomly found a VHS of that short film somewhere. Supposedly those videos were sprinkled all around random places. He said the video just said watch me.

The first was clever and the gimmick made up for a fairly shit movie overall - also introduced the world to the concept of shaky cam being 'artistic choice' and not hack ass filmmaking.

The first film was fun to watch at a midnight showing. We didn’t know much about the movie itself and a bunch of people, including my sister and brother in law, thought it was real. When you hit the ending there isn’t a score and it was fairly silent. Then the hype train took a hold of it and people started trashing it left and right. This movie definitely has a up hill battle. Everyone knows this one isn’t real and it could be forgettable. I hope not. We win when a movie is good and I hope it is. As a big horror movie fan, last year and this year have been great years for horror. Keep it coming.
