TV Line confirms that there will be no third season of Castle Rock as the series has been cancelled after two seasons on Hulu. A specific reason for the show being axed hasn't been revealed, but it's almost certainly a combination of low viewership and cost cutting as a result of COVID.
Set in Castle Rock, Maine, the series took inspiration from Stephen King's work, combining characters and locations from his novels to create new stories. Season one followed a death row attorney to investigate the identity of a mysterious man who was being kept in the bowels of Shawshank State Prison.
In season two, Lizzy Caplan played a younger version of Misery's Annie Wilkes, for an origin story of sorts for that deranged horror film character. There was even a tease at the end of season one that a future batch of episodes might delve further into the mysteries of the Overlook Hotel.
It's not all bad news for fans of King's work, though.
The Stand is coming to CBS All Access, while The Outsider is getting a second season at HBO. Castle Rock producer J.J. Abrams is still developing a spinoff of The Shining for HBO Max too.
