AVENGERS Star Mark Ruffalo Shares Concerns Disney Will "[Break] America" Amid Jimmy Kimmel Controversy

Mark Ruffalo is expected to reprise his role as The Hulk in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but the MCU veteran is speaking out against Disney's decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel and pre-empt his talk show.

Jimmy Kimmel's suspension from ABC continues to make headlines. The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host recently opened an episode of his show with a monologue saying that the "MAGA gang" was "desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them."

Kimmel went on to accuse those on the right of "doing everything they can to score political points from it" and "working very hard to capitalise on the murder." He then reminded viewers of rioters who, on 6 January 2021, "wanted to hang" Trump's first-term Vice President, Mike Pence, for certifying Joe Biden's 2020 election win.

The next day, an ABC spokesperson said Jimmy Kimmel Live! would "be pre-empted indefinitely," and we later learned that Brendan Carr, the Chairman of the FCC, and an avid President Donald Trump supporter, threatened to "take action" against Disney and ABC. NexStar, which, like Disney, needs FCC approval for multi-billion dollar acquisitions, also piled pressure on Disney to pull the show.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day star and MCU veteran Mark Ruffalo has weighed in on social media today. Responding to a post revealing that Disney stock has dipped by 7% since Kimmel's suspension, the actor wrote, "It’s going to go down a lot further if they cancel his show. Disney does not want to be the ones that broke America."

This comes after the Hulk actor recently participated in a No Kings online event and said, "My industry doesn’t really understand what’s happening right now, but what they do understand is our freedom of speech is being attacked."

Ruffalo is far from the only MCU star to speak out against the House of Mouse. The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Pedro Pascal shared a post on Instagram last week where he wrote, "Standing with you Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and added "defend free speech," "defend democracy."

Spider-Man: No Way Home star Marisa Tomei and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's Tatiana Maslany have also called on their followers to cancel their subscriptions to Disney-owned platforms like Disney+ and ESPN.

There are, of course, plenty of people who have celebrated and supported Kimmel's suspension. However, none of them have had any ties to the MCU or DCU (at least not as we write this).

Kimmel has yet to weigh in on his suspension, but talks with Disney are thought to be ongoing. The company has been widely condemned for what many feel is an attack on free speech as Trump looks to silence his critics.

The government didn’t force them off the air. One of their largest affiliates said they wouldn’t air him anymore unless he apologized and he refused to. Sorry but this is Kimmels fault.

@Wallywest001 - He was going to double down blaming MAGA when everyone knew it wasn't on them. The man went on air every damn night shitting on half the country. He couldn't control himself for one night. He claims his staff are full of fact checkers who won't let him lie. So how did that massive lie slip pass them? This is all so ridiculous

@DarthOmega - The fact of the matter...this is Disney we're talking about here.If Kimmel ranting were not shit they would have kept him on air..this gave them an out.It was also pointed out a few days ago...Disney now doesn't have to full pay out his contract either because of this.

Kimmel is an unfunny hack...this has always been the case no matter which side he's on.This dude wasn't on the current side when he was doing the Man Show.Adam Carolla who actually has talent has exposed this dude numerous times. As he said ...Jimmy is a whore...and he's will pull any trick he needs for a buck.

@jst5 - Yup. That whole model is losing money. Colbert, Kimmel, all of it is quickly becoming a dead medium. The audience is literally dying out. How many young people do you know who are saying "Quick Kimmel's about to come on" It doesn't happen. It's a remnant of a bygone era. Podcasts and live streams have taken its place.

I actually like political humor, but only when it takes aim at both sides. George Carlin was the perfect example of that. Jimmy looks more like a propagandist than a comedian.

@DarthOmega - Correct....Conan O'Brien actually has talent but the reason he never got one of those spots and ended up getting it up the rear by NBC is because he simply would not bend the knee. He's actually said he was thankful that's a road he didn't end up going down.

Colbert and Kimmel simply don't have any talent which is why they are pulled off the air...and for sure that whole media model is just about dead...but they only have to look in the mirror for that.Letterman is just as liberal as Colbert and Kimmel but someone had no idea of that when he was on air for a reason.

@Wallywest001 - Kimmel is a pathetic POS and Ruffalo is even more of a pathetic POS. Who cares......

@jst5 - Yes. Letterman, O'Brien, Leno, and Carson. All of them had political leanings, but they didn't use their show as a nightly campaign rally. It's almost like they understood people are getting off work, they're relaxing, they just had dinner, and they want to turn on the TV and laugh. Kimmel and Colbert didn't get that memo. It would've helped if they were at least funny.

Conan is one of the funniest people, not just late night hosts, but people period in my opinion. His writing on SNL and the Simpsons alone places him there. Been watching the guy since I was a kid. Never knew or cared about his political opinions. Even though he, like Leno and Letterman came to Jimmy's defense, I will still watch Conan's podcast, even if he's wrong on this.

@Wallywest001 - Nexstar didn't make their announcement until after the head of the FCC threatened to strip their licensure. Now Trump is openly saying that any station that is critical of him should be stripped of their license. Don't be naive. This is a full on assault on freedom of speech from the very top of the government.

@Wallywest001 - Exactly. Freedom of speech means the government can’t arrest or (in Kirk’s case) murder you for your speech. It’s does not mean you are entitled to make tens of millions to push your bile and propaganda on your low rated TV show nightly when it hurts your bosses and their company product. Gina got canned for her private emails and that didn’t even effect their affiliates. Man, the second the Left faces ANY consequences they go nuts.

And RuffoHulk is a TDS nut job. The guy needs serous meds but like “She-Hulk” they love pushing the agenda until Disney has to step up and do the right thing for once when one of their trained mouth breathers goes too far.

@Clintthahamster - Yup, if it was just low ratings or a company opting to pull the plug cos of saying something dumbt it'd all be fair game and will always say that.

It is ONLY an administration threatening licences for any speech they don't like that is a real issue here and should be regardless political slant.

I know some will argue rules, but that has never been applied to satire before I'm aware of and although as oft the case with late night shows the words can be questionable but didn't seem to cross the line, push it maybe as was almost entirely a dig at political figures weaponising an event not a dig at Kirk or praise for a shooter...

...even if I do feel he shouldn't have commented at all about the topic in a comedic way when emotions for many will still be raw and palpable (hence why sans the FCC stuff if it had ONLY been a Disney call on gone too far, fair, pressure from government is crossing an important line).

Bucky74
Bucky74 - 9/22/2025, 9:51 AM
@DarthOmega - Exactly. If Carlin were alive today he’d rip into both sides but he’d have a field day with the modern Left insanity. He was always a brilliant comedian able to dissect insanity and stupidity. He was a classic liberal but would be considered independent by today’s standards. His main message still resonates today: never trust those in power be they Trump (who I support strongly) or the any one of these crazy Leftists. It’s nuts that Fetterman is the Dem who makes the most sense these days.

@DarthOmega - Hypocrite is too tame a word for these rich Hollywood types. Rules for thee but not for me. I love superhero movies too (and film in general) but understand that these folks do not live in our reality and they do not have to worry about our little problems. They aren’t struggling to pay bills, and they have armed security so they don’t have to worry about being assaulted or robbed when they leave the house, so violent crime is also a no issue. Remember that when they tell you how to vote and live your life

@Wallywest001 - Why should Kimmel apologize?
bobevanz
bobevanz - 9/22/2025, 10:07 AM
This wasn't because of ratings. It wasn't because he was not funny. Trump said Kimmel was next after Colbert. His Project 2025 even replied to a tweet about it with Nicholson smiling and nodding. He didn't say anything hurtful about Kirk. HE SAID MAGA WAS CAPITALIZING OFF OF HIS DEATH and guess what. They are! The comments here are proof. This is turning into a truth social website when it should be about comics and movies.

Here are some quotes from his mouth. Tell me again how he wasn't a racist sexist piece of shit:

*"Yeah, we know. You do not have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person's slot to go be taken somewhat seriously.*"

Said referencing Michelle Obama, Joy Reid, and Kentaji Brown Jackson. All three of which graduated from Harvard. (Kirk by comparison dropped out of community college). I'm direct quoting here, so nobody can claim its out of context. This was in a discussion about benefiting from Affirmative Action, in which he says that they had to 'steal a white person's slot'. If he's saying this about three highly accomplished black women, with higher education, one doesn't have to stretch to imagine what he thinks of other black women.

*“This is something that I hope will make Taylor Swift more conservative," he said. "Engage in reality more… Reject feminism. Submit to your husband, Taylor. You're not in charge.”*

Telling a woman to 'submit to your husband' I'd argue is also pretty hateful, even if it's biblical.

*"If I see a Black pilot, I'm going to be like, 'Boy, I hope he's qualified.'"*

Weird. If you see any pilot at all you should think that, but strangely (or not I suppose) Kirk only thinks that about black pilots.

*Joe Biden is a “corrupt tyrant who should honestly be put in prison and/or given the death penalty for his crimes against America.*

This is the same kind of language people are getting on Democrats about.

*Like, we're dealing with maggots, vermin and swine here. This is not – these are not good people, they're not even a little bit good.*

I thought we weren't supposed to say things like that?

People like to pretend Kirk was all about honest debate, but the truth is he wasn't. He debated people who were inexperienced for clips to put on the internet. He had no interest hearing the other side out. Which is what honest debate should be about.

Oh and to be clear, none of this justifies his murder. But it explains why so many others view him very poorly.

It is on them and political violence is a trend right wing thing since Trumps shooters.
