Clayface Ticket Pre-Sales Are The DCU's Lowest Yet As It Eyes Opening Weekend Below $20 Million

Clayface is tracking well behind expectations at the box office, with pre-sales suggesting a debut below $20 million. Could the horror movie become another costly flop and leave the DCU in jeopardy?

Is DC Studios' next movie, Clayface, already in trouble? Tickets recently went on sale, and according to Box Office Theory, the R-rated horror movie is currently 80% behind Supergirl at the same point ahead of its release. This past June, it opened with $38 million in North America during its first weekend in theaters.

There's a big difference between a PG-13 Superman follow-up and a body horror movie, making Resident Evil a much better comparison. Even with Zach Cregger directing, most didn't have high hopes for that movie, given that every previous instalment had been largely terrible.

Well, Clayface is reportedly 66% behind that movie in terms of pre-sales, meaning it's currently on course to debut with less than $20 million. That means the movie will need to have a strong hold in subsequent weekends and a considerably better start overseas.

With a reported $40 million production budget and an estimated $30 million marketing spend, Clayface will have to earn roughly $100 million to break even. As of now, that doesn't look likely, meaning it could end up losing money.

Supergirl lost a significant amount, and there have been conflicting reports about whether Superman's budget spiralled out of control to the tune of over $300 million. If so, how can Skydance justify allowing DC Studios to make movies that aren't turning a profit?

If Clayface exceeds expectations and Man of Tomorrow is a huge hit, then the DCU will almost certainly continue as planned. If not, new Warner Bros. Discovery owners, Paramount, may decide to take the franchise back to the drawing board.

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the cult-favourite villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also getting a "Story by" credit. Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Chantal Nong Vo, Lars P. Winther, Rafi Crohn and Paul Ritchie executive producing.

Watkins' creative team includes director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer James Price, editor Jon Harris and costume designer Keith Madden. Volker Bertelmann (Conclave) is the movie's composer.

Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23.

Gunn's days are numbered; this is simply not sustainable in a company that is one bad financial move away from bankruptcy. At this point I don't even know if Man of Tomorrow can make as much as Superman did last year, much less exceed it in order to keep this universe afloat.

Well I guess I am part of the problem, I haven’t bought any tickets and I always buy tickets for every comic book movie well in advance. This just looks like a shitty horror movie to me though so my plan was always I’ll see it when I see it.

I am gonna see it with my brother. The budget of the movie is 40 million. If reviews are good, word of mouth and Halloween will help it.

I believe this was done with the perception that it could replicate Joker's success.

However, the DCU shouldn't have been about doing something that has already been done, with stuff like Penguin or Joker. It was about practically making the animated DCU in Iive action.

For me, it was a disgrace that they didn't adapt Woman of Tomorrow's comic. What we got was an abomination (even though I love Milly Alcock as Supergirl. They knew it was trash since day dropped the subtitle.

It doesn't bode well for James Gunn. I'm not in the side of those fire Gunn comments and reboot the DCU shit, but he really didn't have any vision at all. Which is bizarre, since that's exactly what made the MCU as trash as it is.

The redeeming qualities of the DCU right now is that every character is good and they are portrayed by great actors that fit them. They just need to start doing GOOD/GREAT movies ASAP!

I find the DCU lineup absolutely baffling. No Batman, no Wonder Woman, Green Lantern is just a TV show. There was no real effort to establish this universe, except for a bit of text at the beginning of Superman. And on the big screen, they decided to follow up Superman with Supergirl and Clayface, characters nobody cares about.

And on top of all that, they’ve decided to confuse everybody by cherry-picking characters and shows from the DCEU to the DCU.

JoshWilding - 10/13/2026, 6:11 AM
@Moriakum - Even though Peacemaker Season 1 was, IMO, very good, it was a major mistake by Gunn to bring any character over from the DCEU - it sends the wrong message and just makes the DCU look like the DCEU with a few new casting decisions.

The 2023 slate was odd (Paradise Lost, really?) but promising, and Gunn has somehow failed to get most of them even close to being ready four years later. A Supergirl movie that was as visually stunning and impactful as the comic could have been great...instead, it was a cheaply made GOTG movie with a fan-cast Lobo thrown in for the four people who wanted that to happen. Lanterns is a misfire on every level, and yeah, Gunn somehow hasn't found space for a Batman or Wonder Woman movie but is giving us Clayface, Mike Flanagan's passion project, which he no longer has any involvement with and is only being made because they needed to get something cheap in theaters ASAP, and they [frick]ed up Sgt. Rock.

I loved Superman and the GOTG movies, but Gunn is incapable of running a studio. Whether it's arguing with dorks on Threads, giving his buddies jobs, or basically being a LARPer fan of the comics, he's the anti-Kevin Feige.

@JoshWilding - im no fan of James Gunn but i think safran needs some blame here. Dude was responsible the tail end of the DCEU and im not quite sure what he does at the DCU to help Gunn push his vision forward.

I wont judge you too much for like the trash movie we call superman but the quality in story telling, cgi, editing etc is night and day compared to his guardians movies. It seems like Gunn is over worked and safran is just collecting a cheque. 🤣

@JoshWilding -

Everything now depends on MoT. If that is lukewarm or flops, goofy Gunn’s goose is cooked.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/13/2026, 10:20 AM
@Moriakum - Gunn is known for not caring about well-known characters; he mainly prefers characters no one has heard about. This is why I was never the biggest fan of him calling the shots at DC, because I knew DC's big guns would get sidelined in favor of the likes of Peacemaker.

Wow Josh another bad faith article. 20 million on the LOW END! Just because their DC you have the path for a negative article cause all your doing is comparing an R-rated, body horror (niche genre btw) to a superhero film... Never mind you dont dont want to mention the high end which is 29... Obsession opened to 17. Granted made for very little but it was a hit. Nosferatu opened with 21 and was made for 50. The median for wide release horror is what clayface stands to open to. You failed to mention positive word of mouth. Or that next weekend is Halloween. Which might make for a piss poor second Saturday but the whole week is ripe for it.
And these "reports" of superman's budget. Well one, you don't know how to write an article, an editor would tell you that has nothing to do with the damn story. Two: what "reports"?... You mean the tax filing in Ohio? That's gross budget before tax credits and rebates you TWMFFAT!!

If a low-budget horror movie released in a year where low-budget horror movies are popular with Halloween all to itself FLOPS?! I mean... Skydance gotta fire Gunn and batgirl MOT basically. This is a new low. Gunn has no excuses prepared this time. No day and date streaming, no "Superman isn't popular because the world hates America", no (i forget what excuses he made for Supergirl). He's [frick]ed.

Had he used the Penguin or Sophia Falcone to drum up excitement for this, it might have had a chance.

This, however, is a film made as if the characters are under different film studios with concrete-thick red tape.

At this point- they shouldn't expect much.
