Clayface Director Says We Will Feel The "Shadow Of The Bat"; Fake Post-Credits Scene Details Hit Social Media

Clayface director James Watkins has confirmed that while the character himself won't appear, Batman's presence will be felt in the movie...

We know that the DCU's Batman will not make his debut in Clayface (as far as we know, an actor has yet to be cast in the role), but that doesn't mean the Dark Knight's presence won't be felt in some capacity.

While speaking to SFX Magazine (via Screen Rant), director James Watkins revealed that "the shadow of the Bat" will be present in this movie's corrupt, decaying take on Gotham City.

"We looked at a lot of 1980s and 1990s street photography. There was a documentary called Everybody Street, and I looked at a lot of the work of the photographers in it. It captures the bawdy glamor of New York, slightly edgy, slightly eccentric, slightly menacing, richly saturated colors."

"We want the world [of Gotham] to be corrupt," he added. "We want it to be a city where litter doesn't get picked up, where there's a sense of decay, where there's dirt, where the canyons of these places are overbearing. You're in a city called Gotham. So I guess you feel the shadow of the Bat inherently. Because of the nature of where you are."

The social media embargo for Clayface doesn't lift until tomorrow, but vague reactions have been circulating online, along with some obviously fake post-credits scene details that have managed to fool some people and even some other outlets.

The most believable "rumor" claims that two different stingers were tested, one with Matt Hagen being incarcerated in Belle Reve to set up the second season of Creature Commandos, and the other with Batman confronting Clayface as he runs across a rooftop, with the hero's unmistakable cowl reflecting in Hagen's eyes.

We also have an international TV spot featuring new footage, and a first look at Hagen taking another human form.

DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.

Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.

So in his final form is he going to have wrappers and cups and cigarette butts stuck to his body?

It’s hard to be menacing when you’ve got a banana peel stuck to your shoulder

It’s a stretch what he is saying. General decay = Batman.

Sounds like a way to drum up interest.

I know you'd all like to get some Batman, but while you wait, please feel some shadow of the bat. If that doesn't tide you over, have some more silhouette of the bat

@ProfessorWhy - don't need Batsy yet. Have already had an abundance of overload with him through so many animated movies, related tv series, and in film.

I like the approach of analyzing some of Batman's rogues because their origin stories are typically tragic.

Cool. After seeing him in Creature Commandos, I'm sure as hell ready for a live-action Batman ASAP.

This movie will fail also....Then they'll blame Godzilla for its failure 😂

Fake post credit scenes? I'll get in on that!

Throughout the movie we get little "Gotham TMZ" clips of what characters are doing.

After the credits we get a last one of Bruce Wayne coming back to Gotham and it's old footage of Henry Cavill.

You'll feel the shadow as in the 'emptiness' of a movie referencing Batman with easter eggs but never actually including him.

I still think this movie would appeal more if it was unconnected to Batman entirely and was just a low budget body horror flick about a guy who valued his looks trying to regain his looks only to become a monster in the process.

The trailers also should really have been focusing on that aspect of the character. Sure if you look for it you can find that he was a looks obsessed individual who had a hit arranged on him where his face was horrifically damaged so he sought help to repair his face... but you've not really got a sense of his characterization from any of the trailers. If they played him up as a Tony Stark style character in trailers prior to his accident it could have engaged people.

Honestly, this interview now has me convinced they're waiting to see how Clayface is received to announce Watkins as Muschietti's replacement. I bet that's 100% what happens if the movie is a hit
