ALIEN: EARTH Spoilers - Showrunner Noah Hawley On Episode 7's Big Xenomorph Development

The penultimate episode of Alien: Earth is now streaming, and showrunner Noah Hawley has explained what's really going on with Wendy and her "pet" xenomorph...

Episode 7 of Alien: Earth is now streaming, and "Emergence" left us with a lot to unpack as we head towards next week's season finale.

Spoilers follow.

Joe finally convinces Wendy to leave Neverland, along with a clearly unstable Nibs, who goes full-on murder-bot towards the end of the episode when she tears a Prodigy soldier's jaw right off his face (don't f*ck with Mr. Strawberry). We also lost another principal character, as the chestburster that had been gestating inside poor Arthur decided to come out and see the world.

But arguably the biggest talking point among fans of the long-running franchise was the reveal that Wendy, aka Marcie, can actually control the xenomorph she's been communicating with since it burst from her brother Joe's surgically-removed lung.

This is a concept that has never been fully explored (there was an attempt to train the xenos in Alien: Resurrection... it didn't go well) in the movies, but showrunner Noah Hawley makes it clear that things aren't quite as simple as Wendy having a "pet alien" now.

"One of the big question marks was if fans were going to go with this idea," Hawley told The Hollywood Reporter. "I don’t want her to have [a Xenomorph as a] pet. But if it seems like an alliance has been struck, what are the interesting possibilities that we can pull out of that? And because this is a horror story, we have to assume that, ultimately, I wouldn’t bet on this working out."

"The other thing, of course, is that an Alien movie is a two-hour survival story, and a television show has to be an ongoing series," he added. "You have to use the monsters in a different way. You certainly want to use them in the classic way, but you also have to figure out how to sustain having monsters in your show when the reality is they would kill everyone, or that you would kill them — and then that would be it. Bringing in other creatures allowed me to take the pressure off the xenomorphs to fill that void."

Wendy does seem to be able to convince the xenomorph to do her bidding... for now. The creature wipes out a platoon of Yutani soldiers and doesn't attempt to attack Joe, and appears ready to assist when Wendy, Joe and Nibs come under fire towards the end of the episode.

"They are predators. They are very intelligent. They’re calculating," Hawley continues. "But they don’t have ulterior motives. One of the most fascinating things to me about the Alien franchise is you never see them eat. None of their killing seems to be about food. They’re really about reproducing. So they’re kind of fascinating on that level. This all plays into this question driving the Wendy conversation. Humanity is a choice for her now, and the more she chooses to be human, the safer everyone will be. The more alienated and detached she feels from humanity and human morality … well, that’s not good. So there is a question of whether she is going to become a monster, too. I think that core tension makes the show really interesting."

Be sure to tune in to next week's season finale to find out.

“When the mysterious deep space research vessel USCSS Maginot crash-lands on Earth, “Wendy” (Sydney Chandler) and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet’s greatest threat.”

“In the year 2120, the Earth is governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold. In this Corporate Era, cyborgs (humans with both biological and artificial parts) and synthetics (humanoid robots with artificial intelligence) exist alongside humans. But the game is changed when the wunderkind Founder and CEO of Prodigy Corporation unlocks a new technological advancement: hybrids (humanoid robots infused with human consciousness). The first hybrid prototype named “Wendy” marks a new dawn in the race for immortality. After Weyland-Yutani’s spaceship collides into Prodigy City, “Wendy” and the other hybrids encounter mysterious life forms more terrifying than anyone could have ever imagined.”

Alien: Earth stars Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Timothy Olyphant, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, David Rysdahl, Adrian Edmondson, Adarsh Gourav, Jonathan Ajayi, Erana James, Lily Newmark, Diem Camille, and Moe Bar-El.

The show's supporting cast includes Richa Moorjani, Karen Aldridge, Andy Yu, Enzo Cilenti, Max Rinehart, Amir Boutrous, Victoria Masoma, Tom Moya, Michael Smiley, Jamie Bisping and Tanapol Chuksrida.

@HashTagSwagg - The amount of dumb in this show is astounding. It really doesn't make any sense that simply because Wendy has found a means of gurgling out xeno-speak, that she can somehow understand and speak their language and thus issue commands. and having the xeno be a mascot now just kills all tension. Unfortunately the show, albeit at times entertaining mostly because of Chandler and Olyphant, just continues to get worse narratively. I'd argue it's as dumb as the IP has ever been since Prometheus.

@McMurdo - animals etc imprinting on humans is quite common. She was there when it was born and could communicate with it immediately. It makes perfect sense for it to look at her as its mother. Again, very common with wildlife. And there's still a Xeno out in the jungle with no loyalty to her. That's the one that's gonna cause chaos

@BigPhilbowski - "You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? The perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility".
"I admire its purity. A survivor, unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality". We should never be rooting or sympathizing with a Xenomorph. Having it be controlled makes it far less scary and intimidating.

@BigPhilbowski -im not arguing that it doesnt make sense. Im arguing its a stupid route to take the xenomorph narratively. And despite her being able to replicate a xeno linguistically, it really does not make any sense that she understood their language and can now fluently speak to and command it at a whim. But I get the imprinting aspect. That's not really my concern. My concern is what it yields narratively.

Actually we did see the Alien in Alien 3 chowing down on a poor guy in the tunnels.

@skyshark03191 - I've made the mistake of watching this show, this writer is no fan of the alien franchise, to expect him to have done some research and watch any of the other films passed the second one is expecting too much.

A much better episode than the previous one, but I'm losing faith that Hawley will be able to stick the landing in a satisfactory manner.

Loving the show, but I'm not entirely ecstatic about the "working together" angle. Seems a little too contrived for what we've come to expect from the franchise. I'm sure there will be a good conclusion to what's happening between Wendy, and the Xeno. But I really do hope that this truce is thinly veiled, and becomes something far more nefarious than a hybrid and alien teaming up.

If the Alien ends up killing her Brother, I think that'll right the ship for me. It would be an excellent way to push Wendy further away from being human as well if she's somewhat involved in his possible demise.

@RedFury - i mean Hawley just stated they dont have ulterior motives lol

@RedFury - Wendy is essentially the Queen and the Xenomorph is her drone. Since the Xenomorph thinks that she is the Queen, It's listening to her commands. I'm sure the new infant Xenomorph will become the second drone. And they will need to nuke the entire island. That is how Weyland-Yutani learns the importance of a Queen Xenomorph or Queen.

@AnthonyVonGeek - yeah there are aspects that I love about the show but the characters make very dumb choices in some aspects. SPOILER like how Olyphants character let the kids take the scientist with the face hugger. How did he know that the alien would come out before they got to the cyborg. And how would he know the cyborg would bring the 2 very expensive kids back instead of just taking them too. Why does Wendy seem to care about the aliens, and "kids", but not care about letting many other people die. I know she now doesn't trust those people but it just seemed like a seismic shift for her to be so callous to let the xenomorph out to kill all the scientists. Not to mention Olyphant knew the whole time the cyborg was manipulating slightly and could have put a stop to it anytime. Not to mention the boy genius must have plenty of synths but only let olyphant and tootles study the cyborg and letting tootles do it by himself. Obviously they've shown the boy genius to be overconfident but it's just a lot of irrational decision making. Unless the next episode just reveals olyphant is working for waylan utani I just dont know how they are gonna tie it all together. last gripe, after Wendy was asking her brother why he shot nibs I just wanted to scream "BECAUSE SHE JUST RIPPED A GUYS FACE OFF FOR THROWING A STUFFED ANIMAL!" for him lol

Im normally very turned away from shows with characters following bad logic but there's something about this show that im being more forgiving. Its shot great, I like some of the characters a lot (I really liked Arthur, he seemed to be the only person actually thinking with both empathy and rationality, sad hes gone, would have preferred his wife go) and I love the world. Its definitely got major issues but I still like it

Pretty sure the brother is gonna realize that Wendy isn't his sister anymore and that the sister he knew was in the grave they found. Wendy is going full evil.

@NonPlayerC - Kirsh knew the chest burster would come out in a timely manner because he watched it come out of Wendy's brother's lung. He knew Morrow and friends would enter the facility because he trapped the xeno baby thus ensuring their mission objective was nullified. They'd need another specimen. Now why did he bring the kids with him? not sure. maybe for direction within the facility but i hear you on it being smarter to bring them off island for Yutani. I thought Kirsh was perhaps going full David, but then he lets Cavalier in on the security footage and essentially uses the two kids to trap Morrow and co.

agree there is a metric butt load of stupid going on in the decision making dept. Kinda makes Prometheus look like a smart film which is no small order of business lol

NonPlayerC - 9/17/2025, 3:55 PM
@McMurdo - yeah but the cyborg was aware of the incubation period too, maybe he had his timing off because the they put the guy in the cryopod so I'll give you that one. but that was a mother dumb thing I thought though, how the hell did they find 1 intelligent snake snake in the whole of the forest. I guess they could have the whole island wired with cameras and sensors but then why was it hard to find Wendy her brother and nibs. Im sure it could be explained its just a lot of inferring and thought experiment for a viewer.

Like I said its good enough of a show that I can forgive a lot but its one that im either just scratching my head or gotta say just dont think about it and enjoy the ride lol Youre right with prometheus too. The whole thing about explaining where humans came from was dumb. It still leave the glaring question of "well where did the engineers come from" lol

McMurdo - 9/17/2025, 4:32 PM
@NonPlayerC - There's just zero means of this being canon too. it's an elseworlds story whether they want to admit it or not.

One of the best shows on TV right now. Sad we're only getting one more episode, but I think it's successful enough to warrant a second season. No spoilers here, but this last episode 7 was fantastic.

Awful direction to take this, and way too many plot holes and logic inconsistencies are used to sustain a series format. I gave it a chance, but they should never have had the Alien on Earth before the events of the first film.
NonPlayerC
NonPlayerC - 9/17/2025, 3:19 PM
@Bucky74 - I didnt realize this was a prequel until you just pointed that out. I already had my fair share of faults with this show but that is the biggest one now. Why not just make it set after? that makes zero sense. It would have been so much better to just say it ws set after. They would have had reason to go find and bring it back. So now we have to deduce that the original alien movie was a set up from the beginning, sending the crew to find the derelict alien ship but not telling any of the crew before hand or that they just happened to find the same alien species 2 years later in the vast void of space by coincidence.

I genuinely came in here to read the comments as I have personally found this show to be dreary, slow and a major let down with subpar effects.
I’m glad to see others find this offering as dull as I do.

I like this show a lot.

Except for one thing. It's a prequel to the movies???? That is stupid.

Still I have enjoyed every episode.
