AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Director James Cameron Defends Sequel's 3-Hour Runtime: "Give Me A F***ing Break!"

Like Avengers: Endgame and The Batman, Avatar: The Way of Water will boast a three-hour runtime. Now, filmmaker James Cameron has lashed out at those who feel that's too long for a blockbuster movie...

Blockbuster movies have gotten increasingly longer in recent years, and it's become commonplace for major studio tentpoles to boast three-hour plus runtimes  (Avengers: Endgame and The Batman are two recent examples). Marvel Studios has gone down a different route lately, however, as the Doctor Strange sequel and Thor: Love and Thunder are among their shortest movies.

Avatar was a longer movie than most back in 2009 at a whopping 162 minutes, and filmmaker James Cameron is unsurprisingly pulling out all the stops with Avatar: The Way of Water.

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine (via SFFGazette.com), the director made it clear that he doesn't care if people aren't on board with his plans to deliver a sequel that's at least three hours long. "I don't want anybody whining about length when they sit and binge-watch [television] for eight hours," he says. "I can almost write this part of the review. 'The agonisingly long three-hour movie...'"

"It's like, give me a f***ing break," Cameron continued. "I've watched my kids sit and do five one-hour episodes in a row."

It's a fair point in some ways, though it's worth bearing in mind that you can pause a TV show or take a break between episodes! For those who don't want to miss anything, sitting through a three-hour movie can be a bit of a pain...particularly for those with a somewhat weak bladder.

To that, Cameron simply said, "Here's the big social paradigm shift that has to happen: it's okay to get up and go pee." Well, if he says it's okay, we're guessing missing a few minutes of Avatar: The Way of Water won't matter too much.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

To whet audiences' appetites, Disney/20th Century Studios will re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23. As for Avatar: The Way of Water, that arrives in theaters worldwide on December 16.

As long as the movie is good, 3 hours can pass by quite quickly.

@Urubrodi - I felt this with The Batman. Meanwhile Captain Marvel, which wasn't nearly as long, felt like an eternity

@Urubrodi - The Batman flew by for me, while Aquaman and Endgame felt eternal (and I liked them).

@Urubrodi - just watched RRR and that flew by. Over three hours but felt like two.

@Urubrodi - Some can really drag. Look at BVS and JL: Snyder Cut. I wanted them both to end straight away.

@GhostDog - imagine the turmoil that would've caused if that happened in Endgame. Everyone into the movie and then some random dude just pauses the goddamn big ass screen right before Cap goes full AVENGERS ASSEMBLE,to go pee lmao. Pop corn and drink cups flying everywhere and a couple of yo mama mean jokes thrown in the mix i tell ya.

Yeah, it’s not about length it’s about pacing. If you get the right pacing a la Endgame, the film can be long. However, perceptions of pacing can be subjective.

I seem to remember Avatar feeling a little long around about the time the massive tree came down.

"it’s not about length it’s about pacing". I'm gonna have to use that for other, erm, occasions.

Pacing is definitely a factor, but length is a problem when you are consuming media in a crowded cinema without the ability to pause if you have to leave.

Honestly, Avatar should have been two films. The first film ending when the tree came down with the emotional defeat and the impression the villains won. The second film should have tackled a rising resistance force as the humans slowly encroach upon the territory and feature Jake going around convincing the other tribes to join - something thats skimmed over in a montage in the first movie.

Honestly, Jake convincing the other tribes kinda damages the nature of any sequel, because he already united every tribe in the planet once - it shouldn't be difficult for him to do so again.

Im fine with 3 hours

Assuming the movie is something im interested in and its actually good

Not interested in this avatar

On another topic, the first 3 movies for the real avatar franchise are a Zuko movie, a Kyoshi movie and a Korra movie

@dracula - Looking forward to those myself too. Avatar is one of my favorite franchises ever. Last I heard, one of the movies was set in Korra-era in the timeline, but have they since confirmed that it will focus on Korra as the main character?
