In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented - but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a "looper" - a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) - is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good... until the day the mob decides to "close the loop," sending back Joe's future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

Directed by Rian Johnson, and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt and Paul Dano, Looper is set to hit theatres on September 28, 2012.

So, the only way this movie works is if JGL doesn't realize he's hunting his future self, right?

@Catwoman they added prosthetics to his face to make him look more similar to Bruce Willis so he actually looks like a younger version of him.

This film is going to be awesome. Smart premise, great looking action, mainly joseph gordon levitt, i mean that dude is on a roll! Every project he chooses always seems to have a great script and turns out pretty damn great, i dont think ive seen him in a bad film since hes shot to fame, except i guess gi joe but the only reason he did that was for the fun of playing cobRa commander, even then it wasnt a god awful film, it was a bit of mindless fun.

Looks great. I've already said this, but this will be better sci-fi than Prometheus in terms of originality.

@imnotwearinghockeypants - I don't think so. I think you could plausibly have the character justify offing his future self if the upfront payoff was big enough. They could say "Hey, I may only live to be 60, but I'm going to live with the best that money can buy!"

Of course, this also hinges on how time travel works in this movie. After all, shouldn't older Joe remember killing himself in the past? Even if he didn't know who it was at the time, wouldn't he start thinking, "Hey, I'm starting too look just like that guy I killed back in the day?" And what if the future can be changed? Then young Joe might say, "Hey, I'll be able to work something out with my younger self, even if this older version of me can't."

Its about this time the we all start to realize that time travel movies have a LOT of problems.

The best time travel explanation is the multiple universe one. You don't travel within your own timeline, you go over to another, virtually identical universe's timeline. You can't change your past because your never in YOUR past, just the past of another universe that's virtually identical to yours. That's what Michael Crichton did in "Timeline". Demonstrating how difficult it is to deal with time travel stories, however, in the book even the characters can't keep it straight once its explained to them.

@SuspenseSmith I agree, Donnie Darko is one of my favorites it does great with time travel and explains it even better in the director's cut.

@PatientZero - Then why the heck can't the robots figure that theory out and realize that Conners was not "fated" to die in the past? Then they could stop wasting all that energy on time travel.
