TRON: ARES Crashes With $33.5 Million Domestic And $60 Million Global Box Office Debut

Bad news for Disney's Tron threequel, which has come in under already modest box office expectation, taking in just $60 million worldwide this weekend...

A third Tron movie was always going to be a gamble for Disney, and the studio's decision to return to The Grid after Tron: Legacy's underwhelming box office performance has not paid off.

The latest box office reports are in, and while Tron: Ares did claim the No. 1 spot, it took in just $33.5 million from 4,000 North American theaters over the weekend, with another $27 million from overseas markets giving the movie a worldwide debut of $60 million.

This is quite a bit under original estimates of $80M-$90M, and a disappointing start for a movie with a reported $180 million budget (not counting the usual marketing costs).

“The movie was tracking well, but interest stalled during the last 10 days and the opening dropped,” says Franchise Entertainment Research's David A. Gross (via Variety). "The science fiction genre has always done well overseas. This is effects-driven, good-guys-versus-bad-guys storytelling that’s understood and well-liked across all cultures.”

The mixed-negative critical reception probably didn't help matters. With 181 reviews counted, Tron: Ares currently sits at 56% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Is this the final nail in the Tron franchise's coffin? There's always a chance things could improve at the box office over the next few weeks, but It's difficult to imagine Disney putting a fourth movie into development after this. Even so, director Joachim Rønning does hope to be able to continue the story following the events of Ares' post-credits scene.

Spoilers follow.

"If we are lucky enough to be able to continue this story, if enough people go and watch this version and this next installment, we can answer those questions," he tells Collider"It’s a little bit a part of the journey when you're trying to make things land. So, I can't sit there and have all the answers for you right now because I've been just so into the present, getting this film done. For me, it's like, yeah, we'll get to that. We've obviously thought of that, but for me, it was just such an amazing moment to have Sark back and to be able, again, to just honor the franchise somehow, and the original movie."

Tron: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. The feature film is directed by Joachim Rønning and stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, with Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges.

Sean Bailey, Jared Leto, p.g.a., Emma Ludbrook, p.g.a., Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, p.g.a., and Steven Lisberger are the producers, with Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Russell Allen, and Joseph Kosinski serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Jesse Wigutow, with story by David DiGilio and Wigutow, based on characters created by Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird.

@McMurdo - it's not terrible... It's just...

I'm convinced all Tron movies are ment to bomb at first then become cult hits with a small audience who finds something to enjoy about them.

Ares isn't terrible, and it does have some good stuff. But it's just guilty of the same sin all Tron films are guilty of.... Being kinda boring and not what the main audience wanted from the franchise.

Making a main stream Tron film that pleases everyone may be impossible. But I guarantee one thing.... If that film ever does get made, IT WILL ACTUALLY HAVE TRON IN THE [frick]ING FILM.

@Android - Maybe he was, but I'm not the only one here or that I know IRL who are put off the idea paying to watch a film where he is the lead after prior roles. I can only think of one time I saw him in a film I actualy thought it, and he, was good and that was the second Bladerunner then add in the allegations against him...

@Apophis71 - even then tron isn't a blockbuster franchise , all 3 movies haven't done what Disney wanted them to , the TV show was canned after a single season , remember 2.0 the pc game ? That didn't exactly set the world on fire ...the franchise isn't profitable not sure why Disney keeps trying at this point.

@Android - the issue is primarily on Disney's marketing and interest in the franchise. They've continues franchises regardless of losses. It just seems everytime they do Tron, they always handicap themselves somehow. This time around, they choose Jared Leto for a part that could otherwise be filled by anyone else competent enough to play a robot/emotionless AI. I've seen Tron: Ares and I think the movie is good, nothing crazy. If you like Tron then you'll like this film. The issue is they do nothing with Jared's character, the 2nd lead and the Tron IP. They have ideas but none of them pan out or are interesting. Then they pull the rug from under the viewer's by setting up nostalgia bait that relates back to Tron (1982) and Tron Legacy. Like they acknowledge fans are more interested in following up Legacy but have us sit through Ares with the promise they'll follow it up... Instead of yah know, just doing Tron Legacy 2 from the get go instead of Ares

@Android - Yeh I was surprised they went for a third and DIDN'T go with Tron being a main character again considering it has never been a big BO draw. The arcade Tron game I loved back in the day, that and the Star Wars Speeder bike ones where were fun back in the 80's but your right the PC version wasn't good. All in all kinda feels like they were only after increasing interest into a theme park attraction and little else, feel the same with some of the live action versions of old animated films which seems nuts to me.

TheVisionary25 - 10/12/2025, 6:41 PM
Damn , that’s unfortunate…

However I don’t think you can dial it down to the mixed reception of the film since it’s not the any of the Tron films so far have been critically acclaimed across the board when they first came out (hell , this is the second best received film behind the original on RT with Legacy being at 51%).

Some might say it’s because of Jared Leto but I don’t think the GA cares enough about his alleged proclivities tbh to it having this effect.

Ultimately I think it’s a case of Disney overestimating the popularity of this franchise that’s been a cult hit at best hence this is the result of that.

Anyway , Ares seems fine imo but I’m willing to wait to check it out on streaming when it comes out like I’m sure others are aswell.

No it wasn't; there was little to no interest in this movie for the longest time.

Hollywood needs to realize they lost half of their paying viewing audience

Either by Covid or Woke ideology

Only big event movies will make big money

Fantastic four and Superman would’ve been billion dollar movies in 2019

Just finished watching it. It's another Tron film. Style of substance is the curse of Tron. My biggest gripe with Ares is the how the music was used. What I heard was fine, but it wasn't used enough imo.
