Spider-Man: Brand New Day Star Tom Holland Reveals Why Batman Has "Nothing" On Marvel Hero

Discussing his friendship with The Odyssey co-star Robert Pattinson, Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Tom Holland has revealed why he thinks Batman has "nothing" on Marvel's web-slinger.

By JoshWilding - Jul 17, 2026 04:07 AM EST

It's been a busy month for Tom Holland, who is doing the rounds to promote The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Both movies look set to rank among the summer's biggest box office hits, with the latter potentially on track to become the highest-grossing movie of 2026.

In The Odyssey, Holland shares the screen with Robert Pattinson, another actor who is no stranger to playing a superhero after headlining 2022's The Batman.

Asked what he thinks the Caped Crusader has on the wall-crawler, Holland replied, "I'd say nothing. He has more money than Spider-Man. That's about it, to be honest." While his comments were made in jest, they've sparked debates online about which hero is better: Batman or Spider-Man.

They're both equally iconic, that's for sure, but otherwise share little in common. Bruce Wayne is a billionaire who fights lunatics in Gotham City, while Peter Parker is a kid from Queens who, well, fights lunatics in New York. Perhaps there is some commonality there then.

One major advantage Spidey currently has over Batman is the fact that he has a movie coming out in the near future. The Batman Part II was recently pushed to 2028, meaning there will be a six-year gap between the first and second instalments (in fairness, that's only one year more than the wait for Spider-Man: Brand New Day after Spider-Man: No Way Home).

The Brave and the Bold has also stalled, though that DCU project is unrelated to filmmaker Matt Reeves' franchise starring Robert Pattinson.

As for Spider-Man, his MCU future has yet to be revealed. Holland is, however, expected to appear in another trilogy for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, along with Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars.

You can hear more from Holland in the player below.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.

But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo.

The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O'Connor. Executive producers include Louis D'Esposito and David Cain.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.

What a moron Batman would subdue spiderman in 38 different ways before his spider sense even kicks in

@Gambito - Without preparation and having no knowledge of who Spider-Man is? Don't think so.

Spider-Man literally holds back on almost every single fight he has. Dude has superhuman strength, reflexes, agility, an unorthodox fighting style, a spider sense that would give him the edge and web fluid. Batman has a greater intellect and it's master in countless fighting styles so wouldn't be taken down easily, but Spider-Man should be able to defeat him imo.

@Gambito - The Spider-Man vs. Batman debate has been going on forever, but I think Spider-Man wins more often than not.

Batman is one of the greatest tacticians in comics, but Spider-Man isn't just another street-level hero and I think fans tend to not understand or know what he's capable of. He's regularly fought opponents who are stronger, faster, and deadlier than Batman, and he's survived because of a combination of intelligence, agility, and his Spider-Sense. Spider-Man can lift several 10's of tons of weight, dodge bullets, react before an attack is even thrown, cling to almost any surface, and web up opponents from a distance. Batman is an incredible martial artist, but landing clean hits on someone whose Spider-Sense warns him of danger is a monumental challenge. Peter has even traded blows with heavy hitters like the Green Goblin, Venom, Carnage, and occasionally characters far above Batman's weight class.

Now, if you give Batman days or weeks to prepare, that's a completely different discussion. Preparation is his greatest weapon. He'd study Peter, exploit his compassion, develop countermeasures for the webbing, and try to control the battlefield. Even then, though, he'd be facing someone whose speed, reflexes, and raw power are on another level. But, at the end of the day, I think Batman's best chance is winning before the fight starts through planning. If they're dropped into an alley with no warning, Spider-Man probably takes it the vast majority of the time. That's not a knock on Batman, it's simply that Spider-Man's powers create a physical advantage that's incredibly difficult for even the World's Greatest Detective to overcome.

@BadgerThorkin - and don’t forget half of Spidey’s villains have planned countermeasures even thwarting his spider-sense. Yet Pete still manages to win. And don’t forget he’s incredibly
Intelligent as well.

@BadgerThorkin - The problem I have with Batman is that all of his best feats are pure plotarmor. The thing that's supposed to make Batman
"cool" is that he's supposed to be a human with normal human limitations who still manages to hang with top-tier heroes and villains. But then you look at his best feats and they're all things that are, by a very wide margin, completely beyond the realm of possibility for a normal human to perform.

He lifts far more than the strongest men in the world who are roided to the gills. Somehow, even though he's weighted down with all his gear and literally wearing a parachute (his cape), he's able to run 2-3× faster than the fastest olympic sprinters who got their times wearing little more than running shoes and booty-shorts.
His feats are CLEARLY at metahuman level, but they refuse to call him metahuman because that contradicts the premise of his character ... and this is why it's a cheat because his feats are also a contradiction to the premise of his character!

If you take Batman as he is written up and supposed to be and only count his non-plot-armor feats, he's a pretty good street-level hero with a lot of money and a high IQ who wouldn't stand a chance in hell of beating Spiderman or any meta human for that matter any day of the week.

Urubrodi - 7/17/2026, 9:07 AM
@BadgerThorkin - But even if we give Batman time to prepare, it's safe to say Spider-Man will do the same, and Peter may not be as great a tactician but he's smart as hell. Like how he developed counter measures to each villain in No Way Home prior to the final fight.
BadgerThorkin
BadgerThorkin - 7/17/2026, 9:28 AM
@UceOmega - You mean things like him being able to bench 800-1000 lbs or punching hard enough to crack concrete or the ability to dodge gunfire while Olympic sprinting towards adversary (while wearing that armor) or being able to counterattack multiple martial artists at the same time or performing standing backflips while wearing said 100 lbs Bat-armor..the list goes on. lol

No, you're right. It's kinda unreal and stacks the deck in the scenario in a way that someone who's not supposed to have actual superpowers shoudln't be able to.
whynot
whynot - 7/17/2026, 10:03 AM
@Urubrodi - arguably a better fighter and as strong as captain America being both at peak strength. Has heavy hitter suits like the hellbat justice buster and the final batsuit. Plus he’s a multi billionaire who is the greatest detective who ever lived. He stands amongst men and women with literally god level powers being just a mortal man. Crazy that you think Batman is just a regular dude lol i mean sure Spiderman holds back but he’s a hero that’s what they do. Batman holds back aswell. Put the hellbat a variety of other suits on Batman and make the fight with neither holding back lets see who wins

Batman has plot armor.
In a fight to the finish, he would stand no chance at all.

@marvelzombie616- I get the IQ thing and plot armor… would it come down to scenario building up to the fight then, considering Batman’s tactical genius vs. raw IQ? (Please note I’m equally a spidey and bats fan) just always associated Batman being shown to lead teams and outsmart extremely powerful beings, while spidey teams up and helps?

@dragon316 - No he’s right and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out who is superior. It’s simple math. Spider-Man smokes Batman all day everyday and twice on a Sunday. Batman is the world’s best detective and crime fighter with peak level acrobatic prowess & athleticism, elite combat skills with some fancy gadgetry and tech to boot and that’s it.

The notion that Batman can beat gods, cosmic beings, abstract entities and the like is absolutely absurd. Batman was created to be the world’s best crime fighter/vigilante not a god slayer.
Batman fanboys are literal bitches. They go to such lengths to defend a character who’s street level at best but delude themselves into thinking he can go toe to toe with superman and the league.

epc1122 - 7/17/2026, 7:18 AM
It so subjective and just depends on who’s writing the story. In a real fight Superman would destroy Batman but fans of Batman tend to write the story and they routinely have Batman win. Batman is also generally more popular so as a Superman fan, it’s disappointing. But it really depends on the writer.

That deathmatch video was awesome :) kinda makes sense to me now when presented that way… all the comments here and perspectives were enlightening as well. I guess when you think of it, the edge of superhuman strength and reflexes really does give that ultimate edge when suddenly faced with a 1v1 scenario. Thanks all
