Spider-Man: Brand New Day Star Tom Holland Reveals Why Batman Has "Nothing" On Marvel Hero

Discussing his friendship with The Odyssey co-star Robert Pattinson, Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Tom Holland has revealed why he thinks Batman has "nothing" on Marvel's web-slinger.

It's been a busy month for Tom Holland, who is doing the rounds to promote The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Both movies look set to rank among the summer's biggest box office hits, with the latter potentially on track to become the highest-grossing movie of 2026.

In The Odyssey, Holland shares the screen with Robert Pattinson, another actor who is no stranger to playing a superhero after headlining 2022's The Batman.

Asked what he thinks the Caped Crusader has on the wall-crawler, Holland replied, "I'd say nothing. He has more money than Spider-Man. That's about it, to be honest." While his comments were made in jest, they've sparked debates online about which hero is better: Batman or Spider-Man.

They're both equally iconic, that's for sure, but otherwise share little in common. Bruce Wayne is a billionaire who fights lunatics in Gotham City, while Peter Parker is a kid from Queens who, well, fights lunatics in New York. Perhaps there is some commonality there then.

One major advantage Spidey currently has over Batman is the fact that he has a movie coming out in the near future. The Batman Part II was recently pushed to 2028, meaning there will be a six-year gap between the first and second instalments (in fairness, that's only one year more than the wait for Spider-Man: Brand New Day after Spider-Man: No Way Home).

The Brave and the Bold has also stalled, though that DCU project is unrelated to filmmaker Matt Reeves' franchise starring Robert Pattinson.

As for Spider-Man, his MCU future has yet to be revealed. Holland is, however, expected to appear in another trilogy for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, along with Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars.

You can hear more from Holland in the player below.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.

But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo.

The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O'Connor. Executive producers include Louis D'Esposito and David Cain.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.

@Gambito - Without preparation and having no knowledge of who Spider-Man is? Don't think so.

Spider-Man literally holds back on almost every single fight he has. Dude has superhuman strength, reflexes, agility, an unorthodox fighting style, a spider sense that would give him the edge and web fluid. Batman has a greater intellect and it's master in countless fighting styles so wouldn't be taken down easily, but Spider-Man should be able to defeat him imo.

@Gambito - The Spider-Man vs. Batman debate has been going on forever, but I think Spider-Man wins more often than not.

Batman is one of the greatest tacticians in comics, but Spider-Man isn't just another street-level hero and I think fans tend to not understand or know what he's capable of. He's regularly fought opponents who are stronger, faster, and deadlier than Batman, and he's survived because of a combination of intelligence, agility, and his Spider-Sense. Spider-Man can lift several 10's of tons of weight, dodge bullets, react before an attack is even thrown, cling to almost any surface, and web up opponents from a distance. Batman is an incredible martial artist, but landing clean hits on someone whose Spider-Sense warns him of danger is a monumental challenge. Peter has even traded blows with heavy hitters like the Green Goblin, Venom, Carnage, and occasionally characters far above Batman's weight class.

Now, if you give Batman days or weeks to prepare, that's a completely different discussion. Preparation is his greatest weapon. He'd study Peter, exploit his compassion, develop countermeasures for the webbing, and try to control the battlefield. Even then, though, he'd be facing someone whose speed, reflexes, and raw power are on another level. But, at the end of the day, I think Batman's best chance is winning before the fight starts through planning. If they're dropped into an alley with no warning, Spider-Man probably takes it the vast majority of the time. That's not a knock on Batman, it's simply that Spider-Man's powers create a physical advantage that's incredibly difficult for even the World's Greatest Detective to overcome.

@BadgerThorkin - and don’t forget half of Spidey’s villains have planned countermeasures even thwarting his spider-sense. Yet Pete still manages to win. And don’t forget he’s incredibly
Intelligent as well.

@Gambito- completely agree. I think the comment was made by Pattinson based solely on the version of Batman he’s playing. The majority of comic book readers would automatically associate Batman with the countless stories that show he can stand or even topple superpowered beings or even gods through his tactical genius alone.

Batman has plot armor.
In a fight to the finish, he would stand no chance at all.

Peter Parker is also vastly more intelligent than Bruce Wayne.

@marvelzombie616- I get the IQ thing and plot armor… would it come down to scenario building up to the fight then, considering Batman’s tactical genius vs. raw IQ? (Please note I’m equally a spidey and bats fan) just always associated Batman being shown to lead teams and outsmart extremely powerful beings, while spidey teams up and helps?

It so subjective and just depends on who’s writing the story. In a real fight Superman would destroy Batman but fans of Batman tend to write the story and they routinely have Batman win. Batman is also generally more popular so as a Superman fan, it’s disappointing. But it really depends on the writer.

This made me realize that both Spider-Man and Batman are in The Odyssey.
