Despite many fans speculating that a four year delay until the next instalment in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, a new report claims that while Sony are hoping to "freshen" the brand, they don't intend to reboot and Marc Webb is still expected to return and complete the trilogy...

The Hollywood Reporter have a very interesting piece up about Sony's decision to release Sinister Six in 2016 and to push The Amazing Spider-Man 3 back to an undisclosed date in 2018. Since this news broke, many fans have wondered whether a reboot could be on the way (after all, Andrew Garfield will be nearly 35 by the time the third movie comes out and getting a little old to play a high school graduate), while some even believe that the rights could return to Marvel Studios at any minute. Well, that's all speculation for now, but the site do drop one very intriguing detail. "Privately, Sony admits it is seeking to freshen the brand but has no major overhaul plans, with Webb expected to return to complete the trilogy (as Raimi did with the first three films)." Will he want to return after the tepid response to the latest movie? What exactly do they mean by freshening the brand? The site goes on to mention that while Jamie Foxx is expected to reprise the role of Electro in Sinister Six, he won't be back for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, leaving us all to wonder what the point of that movie is if Spidey won't be in it. Anyway, for now, Sony are clearly intent on forging ahead with their plans for the iconic Marvel character...

I hope Marc Webb comes to his senses. He clearly isn't the Spider-Man fan he claims to be if he is agreeing to all the crazy nonsense Sony is stuffing into the franchise. Unless, this is all HIS IDEA.

i'd love for Marvel to get Spider-Man's rights back so we could get Civil war, cos I believe Peter's role in the War is the most interesting character piece, BUT in saying that, I've got no issues with the new TASM movies, they're not perfect, but they're better than the first trilogy, but each to their own I guess.

I would much rather see Webb direct something along on lines of (500) Days of Summer again. I believe he will make a good movie again someday. And that movie won't be Spider-Man.

As for Drew Goddard, this is a case where the director seems to be too good for the material. A Sinister Six film sounds like a lazy, desperate attempt to get a piece of that Avengers money. It sounds even worse when Avi Arad said the Sinister Six would have a redemption story arc and will just be misunderstood. Does that sound sinister to you?

Spider-Man movies just need to go away for awhile. The box office numbers for TASM2 proves people are tired this franchise. But unfortunately, it looks as if Sony is going to continue shoving these movies down our throats even though the box office returns are clearly saying, "Enough."

But maybe this franchise can only return to its former glory if it rises out of the ashes.

Yeah, cause $706,342,322 (only 6 million below cap winter soldier i might add) is such a bomb, and it shows that people are so tired of this franchise, it may have not made what sony was expecting but 706 million dollars is still pretty good.

Garfield will be 35 years old when TASM 3 comes out, I'm seriously wondering if he'll be re-casted.

I couldn't stand TASM 2, I hope Sony and Webb figure out what their doing or at least learns how to bring some intimidating and interesting villains to the screen....

The problem money-wise is that Sony poured to much money into the film. Spider-Man 2 grossed less than the previous film but they lost less because it had around a $25-50mil cheaper budget. You can't make a movie and expect a billion dollar hit, those that do are bound to get bitten on the ass.

The brand needed "refreshing" from the very beginning
(The Amazing Spider-Man), Sony just redid what Raimi did with the original films, they really need to step it up next time around or they're really going to kill this franchise, hopefully Marvel will step in and make an offer to Sony to revert the rights back to them.
