James Gunn Teases MAN OF TOMORROW's "Heroic" Lex Luthor And Says It's Less "Comic Booky" Than SUPERMAN

DC Studios co-CEO and Man of Tomorrow director James Gunn has shared his excitement to explore Lex Luthor's heroic side, and reveals new details about the movie and how Peacemaker sets the stage for it...

James Gunn has muddied the waters of what constitutes a sequel while hyping up Man of Tomorrow. Regardless, the Superman follow-up will put the spotlight on Clark Kent and Lex Luthor as they team up to face a "bigger" threat.

When we last saw Lex, he was being taken to Belle Reve for his role in the destruction that befell Metropolis when he attempted to kill Kal-El.

However, when he dons his green and purple War Suit from the comics to combat this mysterious new threat, will Lex also become a hero? While his comic book counterpart has often fought on the side of the angels, that "heroic" side of the character is one the Man of Tomorrow writer and director is eager to explore.

"I think I'm just more interested in getting into the heart of Lex and seeing how he fits into all of this," Gunn explained in a recent interview with The Ringer-Verse"I think getting to know more of Lex as a human being. We saw a lot about the evil part of Lex. He's pretty evil. He, as a character, is really interesting. There's something, despite everything, that is incredibly heroic about Lex."

"Take aside morality, which is hard to do, but here is this guy who is saying, 'You can hold up a building. You can shoot down planes with your eyes. F*** you, I'm going to kick your ass because I'm better than you. I can't help but admire his tenacity and his ego. His ambition is beyond compare. He's the underdog."

"Yeah, sure, he's got a lot of corporate power that he can use to manipulate things, but he can't fly into outer space, lift up a building, or punch something across three states," the DC Studios co-CEO added. "He's a guy, and I f***ing love that."

Gunn went on to shed more light on what fans can expect from Man of Tomorrow by saying that Superman "is more comic booky in some ways," reiterating that this sequel "has to do with the dual characters of Lex and Superman at the centre."

The Daily Planet staff and the Justice Gang are expected to appear in the movie, as is Peacemaker. Gunn has described the HBO Max series as a Man of Tomorrow prequel, and pointed to the finale playing a key role in setting up what we'll see in theaters less than two years from now.

"I want to make sure people can pick up and watch something without having to see something before it," he said of Peacemaker season 2. "That said, episode 8 is as important to Man of Tomorrow as anything."

While the final few episodes of Peacemaker haven't been provided to critics in advance to protect spoilers, the prevailing theory is that A.R.G.U.S. will be forced to turn to Lex for his help in figuring out the Quantum Unfolding Chamber (if that leads to him being freed from Belle Reve, it could set up Man of Tomorrow, just as Gunn is promising).

Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Imagine McQuarrie or Brad Bird doing this - instant colossal upgrade. What a shame

I'd hope that means it's more serious, grounded, and less potty humor but knowing Gunn that's not what it means at all. Wouldn't be surprised if he puts and orgy in this one as well

Reboot the MCU and DCU

So Gunn's Superman is a an emotional pussy and his Lex is a hero cause he has ambition to kill Clark. Gunn's gotta go, DC is in the wrong hands.

@WarMonkey - Gunn could have worded it better, but you're trying to squeeze out some narrow justification to hate everything. He should have said explore Lex's potential for heroism & how he could have been just as great a man as Superman. That he had it within him, but his personality flaws & upbringing keep him from reaching such heights.

Oh, & while he flew off the handle & got loud a little too quickly in the interview scene (you know you would have lost it if someone kidnapped your cousin's dog who was in your charge & you knew the culprit), he should be allowed to show some emotion. He can't be a statue. That's not healthy.

@WarMonkey - depends what Superman book your read he is like that in comics https://youtube.com/shorts/dqviRE1fLyU?si=ULwnGfoVwg2uCySP

@WarMonkey - Blunt but accurate. Cornsweat (from that released behind the scenes clip) knew he shouldn’t have gone that direction but Gunn wanted whiney man-baby Gen whatever Supes who needed nightly “Soothing” from his parents.

@TDKRnry88 - Man this is spot on!!! If Man of Tomorrow is anything like you described, that’s a film I’d love to see!!! And we have seen that explored in the comics and on Smallville, which did it really well. I know Gunn is a fan of that show too.

@TDKRnry88 - The part where he says to Lois Krypto is out there alone and scared and goes off to find him is actually my favorite part of the movie. I also loved the squirrel rescue. I don't hate everything.

Lex kept potentially hundreds of people in cages, some for incredibly petty reasons, and shot a completely innocent man in the head just to try and get to Superman. Might be an “interesting” character but heroic? If that’s where you wanted to take this, maybe don’t make him a complete POS. But we’ve already seen questions if morality thrown under the bus (Lois grills Clark over doing far less than Hawkgirl does). If Gunn can write that interview scene and then turn around later and just say “oh yeah cool she drops him!” all bets are off.
TDKRnry88
TDKRnry88 - 9/20/2025, 7:56 AM
@RealTurner - Gunn should have said "exploring Lex's heroic potential", which the character has. I'll bet all my money that he'll still be evil, but if he gets out of prison due to his actions in Man of Tomorrow, he'll start to rebuild with even more intent to destroy Superman's life, but under the radar. I highly doubt that Lex will do a 180.

JobinJ - 9/20/2025, 7:56 AM
@RealTurner - exactly. There is now “heroic” after what Lex did. Plus he was a whiney crybaby. So annoying.
dragon316
dragon316 - 9/20/2025, 8:02 AM
@RealTurner - lex has not killed innocent in people in comics then later black mail Batman be part of justice league then later became teammate help Superman which all happens in comics
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 9/20/2025, 9:49 AM
@RealTurner - Exactly. Question the morality of playing a deity and having dominion to decide world wars and events but then make a joke out of cold bloodily straight up murdering a world leader. That’s Gunn. He puts things in his films a professor wouldn’t let pass for a first year film student in a screenwriting class.
FleischerSupes
FleischerSupes - 9/20/2025, 11:27 AM
@RealTurner - Yeah the incoherence of it bothers me a lot. I think because he had Peacemaker shoot Flagg, and then become a hero, he thinks he can do the same with Luthor.
FleischerSupes
FleischerSupes - 9/20/2025, 11:30 AM
@dragon316 - Just because it happened in the comics doesn't make it good. It was bad in the comics. 90% of comics are trash, maybe every 15 years something good gets made.
RealTurner
RealTurner - 9/21/2025, 8:23 AM
@Bucky74 - I actually just watched the movie again on digital and was watching closely. At that point in the movie the Louis expose has been "published" but i) Hawkgirl probably didn't read it while flying over to do war crimes and ii) it still isn't 100% holds-up-in-international-court evidence. Gunn wants the quick satisfaction of the guy getting dropped but it would have been so much better to see him in court for his crimes--says the exact same movie that Gunn himself wrote. I still can't quite reconsile the two, although I think that point there is probably a lot more evidence of the president's wrongdoing than when Clark visited.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 9/21/2025, 10:15 AM
@RealTurner - It still felt like Gunn trying to push a political narrative and in poor taste

This feels so strange, getting info on a 'follow up' movie so soon after Superman. I know im comparing it to what we're used to with the MCU and so on, but at this point i'm not sure if im worried or impressed with Gunn.

@dragon316 - in Justice League the show, Superman sided with Lex to help him defeat the Justice Lords. Some say just because it happens in other media doesn’t make it good which ultimately is a subjective point of view. Let the story do that job in this upcoming film.

Lex Luthor ended up saving the day in justice league unlimited 🤷‍♂️
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/20/2025, 8:25 AM
@epc1122 - yeah

Lex has even teamed up with Superman to a degree in the comics aswell

If they have a shared enemy or interest then as the saying goes “the enemy of my enemy becomes my friend”.
epc1122
epc1122 - 9/20/2025, 8:33 AM
@TheVisionary25 - I’m not quite sure why this is a news flash for some on here other then their blind unneeded hatred for Gunn. Luthor was also president of the United States 🤦🏻‍♂️. I personally don’t see Lex staying good for too long.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/20/2025, 8:46 AM
@epc1122 - plus , I don’t even see this in regards to Lex being good but moreso just in a moment of necessity where he has to team up with his sworn enemy to fight a bigger threat so I don’t see them being buddy buddy.
epc1122
epc1122 - 9/20/2025, 8:49 AM
@TheVisionary25 - I think there might be a moment or two where Superman will learn something about Lex where he’ll have sympathy for him. Probably about lex’s upbringing or relationship with his father. This movie will have them be like tango and cash or bad boys but by the end of the movie Lex will still be a bad guy.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/20/2025, 9:04 AM
@epc1122 - I could see that

Superman still had hope for Lex at the end of the movie so I can still see him feeling that way in this as he finds out more about him
epc1122
epc1122 - 9/20/2025, 9:19 AM
@TheVisionary25 - and then with Lex potentially helping him, Superman will have more hope for Lex. I think the last movie will focus on Lois and I can see potential arguments with Superman and Lois regarding Lex. Lois won’t trust Lex and Superman will defend Lex saying how Lex helped with whatever they dealt with in the upcoming film.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/20/2025, 9:25 AM
@epc1122 - that could be interesting.
NonPlayerC
NonPlayerC - 9/20/2025, 11:07 AM
@epc1122 - I wouldn't want superman ever defending lex but I can see him begrudgingly working with him for the greater good. Superman should have empathy but shouldn't be blind. Forgive, but don't forget. If anything they should go the route where the world is saying that Lex has reformed but superman won't accept it.
epc1122
epc1122 - 9/20/2025, 12:49 PM
@NonPlayerC - I can see at first Superman begrudgingly working with Lex, then thinking Lex has turned it around he’ll defend him. Whereas Lois will still question Lex’s motives. Superman sees the good in everyone. While naive, it’s also part of who he is and the “punk rock”
In him. Depending on how long this universe gles, I can see movie three being lex’s redemption and
then movie four will be Lex bringing him down again bc he’s still a villain. After the four movies Superman will know that Lex can never really turn good but will hope he does good things.
NonPlayerC
NonPlayerC - 9/20/2025, 4:40 PM
@epc1122 - I could see that, my only issue with it is that gunn started superman out with him already 33 years old. I wouldn't mind a naive 20 or even 25 year old superman but in his mid thirties is a bit of a stretch for me. Not an awful idea and done right it could definitely work. I might just be nitpicking. just comparing it too much to Christopher reeve and the animated universe I grew up with. Reeve was only 26 when the first movie came out and he had all the optimism but was more mature. Like I said nitpicking.
epc1122
epc1122 - 9/20/2025, 4:52 PM
@NonPlayerC - To be fair though, Christopher Reeve's Superman wasn't really challenged the same way that David's Superman was. Lois in Superman 78 fawned over Superman and didn't challenge him and the public generally loved Superman in 78. In Superman 2, the movie didn't really delve into Superman leaving the public and letting Zod take power. In the diner with the bully, when Superman didn't have his powers, he did get caught up and stood up to the bully, but he was almost immediately trying to fight the guy. Then at the end, he broke the guys hand knowing the guy would try to get physical. When I was younger, I loved it, but Superman isn't perfect. I'm 43 now and I don't think I would react the same way now as I would at 33, you don't think so, but it's still pretty young. I think we'll see a more mature superman in the next one.
epc1122
epc1122 - 9/20/2025, 5:00 PM
@NonPlayerC - Also, please don't think I'm not a fan of Christopher Reeve's version. He's still my number one Superman and at this point, I don't think he'll ever lose that spot. Been a Superman fan for close to 40 years and have my personal rankings, but I've loved something about each and every version. For me my ranking would probably:

1) Reeve
2) Hoechlin
3) Corenswet
4) Routh
5) Cavill
6) Welling (mostly Superman just without the suit lol)
7) Christopher (technically Superboy)
8) Newton (Technically Superboy)
9) Cain
NonPlayerC
NonPlayerC - 9/20/2025, 5:20 PM
@epc1122 - no of course not, im actually accepting of others opinions lol I like corenswet, just had issues on some characterizations. Having supes have multiple emotional outbursts in the same movie, and not finding a way to take care of the kaiju without letting the justice gang kill it, just things like that. I thought the movie was fun just had flaws. Ive just always preferred the superman that's always in control of himself no matter what. Its like if he actually lost control and raised his voice in an enclosed room it would be like a grenade going off lol The line from the animated cartoon has always stuck with me from when I was a kid when he finally starts beating darkseid and says "I feel like I live in a world made of cardboard, always taking care not to break something, never allowing myself to loose control" and then lets loose and beats the crap out of darkseid. We all have the one or two comic runs or movies that we see as "the correct" portrayal of any character that has 80 plus years of media. funny enough lex was helping the league fight darkseid and I think sacrificed himself in that episode so the lex redemption arc is definitely there to be done
NonPlayerC
NonPlayerC - 9/20/2025, 5:26 PM
@epc1122 - and im 37. Im different though. Im one of those guys that represses all his feeling like a stereotypical 1950s guy. If I let myself get worked up I go nuts and see red so I dont let myself get mad. Not saying that's a better a to be either, we're all crazy in our own ways lol
epc1122
epc1122 - 9/20/2025, 6:12 PM
@NonPlayerC - I actually thought Hoechlin had the perfect characterization but didn’t necessarily have the look. I think David’s Superman was frustrated and showed his humanity. I’ve said this before but I think the interview would have played out differently if it wasn’t in the comfort of Lois home. At the end of the movie he acted more like the traditional Superman asking her if she wanted to have an interview. I don’t know, just different with different people and as much as it was an interview, it really wasn’t in a professional setting. As far as the kaiju, I think he tried to save the kaiju but Superman in this world just isn’t powerful, reminds me of the fleischer Superman. I’m not sure if you mentioned, but do you have a favorite version?
epc1122
epc1122 - 9/20/2025, 6:15 PM
@NonPlayerC - well that doesn’t sound healthy but to each their own. It’s hard to stop yourself from getting mad, maybe have a stress ball or something lol.
NonPlayerC
NonPlayerC - 9/20/2025, 7:15 PM
@epc1122 - favorite live action version was Reeves by far. Smallville did great for a young superman. Hard to list after reeve though, there's things I liked about all of them. The animated Bruce tim justice league and batman shows were what shaped most of my ideal superman and batman preferences. Along with the else world Kingdom Come (maybe my favorite DC else world) comic and Crisis event comics. I never really read too many solo superman comics. I was always more of a Batman/Nightwing for DC or X-men comic fan for marvel. Ive had random comics of all the other characters but those were the only ones I truly followed

1) Reeve - perfect portrayal of supes but not the biggest hackman lex fan, just rewatched the first one after starting this convo with you lol
the rest really come in at kind of a tie for me, there's things I loved about all of them but things I didnt
2) Hoechlin - same as you great characterization but yeah looked the part the least
3) Welling - I liked his personality, still reserved but showed him working thru stuff at the same time, great as a young supes but never wanted to wear the suit
4) Corenswet & Cavill - for different reasons, Corenswet has the hopefulness but Cavill had the intimidation, if you could combine the 2 writing wise either would be perfect
5) Routh - almost just like Reeve but had a bit of a pensiveness or sadness, still like him though, by the time the he was in the CW show he looked the part more than anyone but cavil but the CW crisis was a little corny
Cain - still enjoyed the show as a whole, got weirder as it went on though

never watched the superbly show so cant judge those two. And no stress ball needed so far lol im cool as a cucumber most of the time. I find its all about focusing on what matters. Other people are the reason most people get mad, I just look at it as most people cant control their emotions and are kinda chained to their impulses. I just try to forgive the small stuff, be the bigger man and try be understanding. Ive learned to pause and take a deep breath calmly express my dissent if its important or just let it slide if it's not. That works most of the time anyway lol
