PEACEMAKER: James Gunn Confirms The Quantum Unfolding Chamber Is "Non-Human" - Is He Teasing Brainiac?

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that Peacemaker's Quantum Unfolding Chamber is alien in nature, lending weight to theories that Brainiac created the device. You can hear more from him here...

Peacemaker season 2 has seen Chris Smith explore the Quantum Unfolding Chamber that houses 99 alternate universes. We know at least one of them leads to Earth-X, a reality that Peacemaker has since discovered was not all it was cracked up to be.

The series briefly touched on the QUC's origin story with a flashback that showed the DCU's Auggie Smith and his young sons, Chris and Keith, finding and killing an alien in the woods who was in possession of the mysterious, immensely powerful device.

Many fans are convinced that Brainiac is the, well, brains, behind that doorway to other dimensions. We know A.R.G.U.S., with the help of Lex Luthor and one of his henchmen, will start exploring it next week, and that could factor into 2027's Man of Tomorrow.

Breaking down the latest episode of Peacemaker on Threads, James Gunn confirmed that the device is "definitely advanced, non-human."

That was to be expected, of course, but it certainly lends some weight to theories that Brainiac is responsible for its creation. After all, a device full of doorways leading to alternate realities wouldn't be too dissimilar to the villain's penchant for collecting and storing shrunken cities.

Gunn was recently asked about the intriguing piece of imagery on Man of Tomorrow's script. "Listen, of course I wasn't unaware that when I posted the cover of the script that there was going to be discussion around that particular topic. But I think we'll hold off from what exactly is happening."

The filmmaker has repeatedly said that Peacemaker season 2 sets the stage for his Superman follow-up, but has also recently attempted to rein in expectations after overhyping the final few episodes a little.

For starters, it's looking increasingly likely that the "really, really, really big cameo" was Lex Luthor, not a new addition to the DCU or Superman. Gunn is a little prone to hyperbole, having described The Flash as "one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen" and "f***ing amazing."

Do you think the QUC could be connected to Man of Tomorrow and Brainiac?

Peacemaker season 2 follows Chris Smith, the vigilante superhero, as he struggles to reconcile his past with his newfound sense of purpose while continuing to kick righteous evildoer butt in his misguided quest for peace at any cost. He discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.

Season 2 stars John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Frank Grillo, Sol Rodríguez, David Denman, Brey Noelle, and Tim Meadows.

James Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker and directed three, including the first episode. Gunn, Peter Safran, and Cena serve as executive producers. Greg Mottola, Peter Sollett, and Alethea Jones also direct.

In our review of Peacemaker season 2's first five episodes, we wrote, "Peacemaker season 2 feels like a wholly superfluous addition to the new DCU, and lacks the stakes and emotion that made season 1 so special. Fortunately, it’s buoyed by some fun surprises for fans and another exceptional turn from John Cena."

Seven episodes of Peacemaker season 2 are now streaming on HBO Max.

I mean , this seemed obvious given the alien we saw Auggie kill that had it but anyway…

I could see Brainiac being involved but not as the creator of that machine but as someone who found out an alien species had tech that could access alternate dimensions , collected their world while one escaped with the tech & landed on earth only to be killed by Auggie who then took that technology.

I mean I could see Brainiac being interested in that technology since it’s just more worlds to collect and knowledge to assimilate in his eyes hence he’s been looking for it and now finds out it’s on Earth thus forcing Lex and Superman to reluctantly team up against this big threat.

It's more likely to be Apokolips tech than brainiac.

What he's teasing is a reboot and his firing. This guy can no longer fail upwards. Let's look at the facts. Diapershit now has the exact same imdb rating as Man of Steel after JUST 3 MONTHS! It took Man of Steel YEARS to get a 7.1 rating after the revisionist history and review bombing from MCUTARDS. It took Superman just 3 months. On Reddit, I called this out on release when Superman debuted with a 7.7 rating, the exact same number Man of Steel debuted with. All 3 "good" superhero films this year have a 7.1 rating on imdb and all will continue to drop. I expect them to finish between a 6.8-7.0 at this point. But, but.... CBM's are back? And if you guys think that's a good number for a recent superhero movie, The Suicide Shit, Ant-Man 1, Shazam, Ant-Man and the Wasp, TASM, Dr Strange 2, Iron Man 3, Thor 1, Iron Man 2, Ghostbusters 2016, The Last Jedi, etc, all have similar ratings. Shang Chi, Avengers AOU, Far From Home all have higher ratings and many see those films as mid if not outright shit (They're outright shit).

Man of Steel made more money and has a higher Metacritic score. People have rejected this childish, garish, feminine, weak, cartoonish, campy bullshit Superman. The proof is in the pudding. Not only that, but people have rejected Superhero projects as a whole now. It's dead. The only way to fix it is a reboot. No Superhero movie, including Superman, will be in the top 10 when Wicked 2 and Avatar 3 release. Demon Slayer destroyed every Superhero movie.

And to cap it all off, Peacemaker is the biggest flop next to Shit Commandos that Gunn has ever made. It STILL hasn't gotten on the nielsen chats and Samba TV shows extremely low viewership. Being top #3 on MAX means nothing when the garbage ahead of you also isn't being watched (Task). But... I thought the 22% higher rating meant something. No, it didn't. You just listened to the propaganda bullshit. Having a 22% increase means nothing when no one was watching your show in the first place. Gunn has been doing everything for this show, an entire podcast for it, promoting it hard and even telling people this is a direct sequel to Superman and Prequel to Man of Tomorrow and NO ONE CARES. Peacemaker is NOT Guardians. In fact, Guardians doesn't exist anymore. That WILL NEVER happen again. It was lightning in a bottle. But Gunn refuses to accept that.

I say all of this to say, Reboot the MCU and DCU. If you deny that we need a reboot after this, you're too far gone and delusional.

I can't imagine putting this much effort into anything I dislike and here you've made it the majority of your online presence here.

Oh no the DCU isn't for me, I guess I'll cry about it insessently online instead if focusing on things that bring me joy.

Get ready, Gunn will post another thing for you to get your panties in a bunch about

@WalletsClosed - At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. The studio was clearly happy enough with Superman's box office performance, as we recently learned that Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Production is expected to get underway next summer.

@JackDeth - Without arguing over "comedy", you think James Gunn has been using this alien as a comedic prop and isn't integral to the story at all? When we saw the flashback of Peacemaker finding the box, it was clearly a smaller version of that alien. I just don’t see how the alien, which is the very reason the box exists in the first place, won’t end up playing a key role in the story

People can blame Gunn all they want for 'over-hyping' during the marketing phase, but you have to be responsible for your own hype levels. The people who are out here claiming they want to see 'ALL THE CAMEOS' then get mad when all we get is a meaningful emotional story (like we did in episode 7), only have themselves to blame. Don't expect to see Superman, or Blue Beetle or Green Lantern. Just watch the finale and be surprised if you get some fun surprises.

@Clintthahamster - Exactly. Multiverse of Madness, No Way Home, even IRONHEART had this problem. I'd hate to say it's getting worse, but it seems to be. Now I see people saying they think Fleury is actually Martian Manhunter and I see people getting mad at Gunn if he's not.

Peacemaker is better than 90% of all CBM shows. It doesn't hold back or pull its punches. Water cooler shows are the best kind. There's a discussion every week. Now of course there's a small group of people who want to cry like babies and act like this isn't popular when it is. They're also the type of delusional person who thinks the Epstein Files isn't real muahaha

@bobevanz - So much better than 90% of all CBM shows that it can't even chart huh? Discussion of what? Orgymaker has zero substance. Lost was a water cooler show. Game of Thornes was. Penguin was. Peacemaker will be forgotten about in a month

Watched Superman for the first time this weekend. Not sure if I'm just becoming a sour, middle aged bore or if it was actually just colourful froth? I get that it needed to be an antidote to the overly dour Snyder Universe but (for me) the lack of any darkness made it a little one dimensional. I bought it so I guess I should watch it again, without prejudice.
