Lanterns Now Has The Lowest Audience Score Of Any DCU Project On Rotten Tomatoes

Despite positive reviews from critics, fans are split on DC Studios' Lanterns. Now, that's reflected in the show's Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, especially compared to the rest of the DCU.

Critics have widely praised Lanterns, but comic book fans seem to have a different take on the latest DCU project. The HBO Max TV series started with a glowing 89% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter, but that's plummeted to 70% since the finale aired last Sunday.

7/10 isn't bad, right? Maybe, maybe not; either way, this makes Lanterns the lowest-rated DCU movie or TV show since the franchise launched in 2023.

Creature Commandos has a 79% score from fans, while Superman kept the momentum going with a "Verified Hot" 90%. Peacemaker Season 2—which many felt dropped the ball with its finale—has 79%, and even Supergirl has beaten Lanterns at 72%.

While DC Studios' take on the Green Lantern mythos was well-received by critics, it seems James Gunn and Peter Safran made a major misstep with its handling of Hal Jordan and John Stewart in the eyes of fans (the very people the studio needs to get on side after the DCEU's many low points).

Aaron Pierre is set to reprise his role as John in Man of Tomorrow, and if he shows up in a comic-accurate costume with a whole host of constructs in tow, it might be enough to win over those dissatisfied with his portrayal in Lanterns.

Unfortunately, there's likely no undoing the damage done to Hal Jordan, a character the creative team seemingly set out to destroy over the course of the eight-episode series (with one writer branding him a racist). That's backfired, however, as many fans chose to look past that interpretation and have expressed a hope to see more of Hal down the line.

HBO has not disclosed viewership data for the Lanterns finale, and there's no word on a Season 2 renewal. Previously, HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed that The People vs. Gorilla Grodd is the only DCU TV series currently in active development.

"Lanterns' leads shine bright," we wrote in our Season 1 review, "but even they can't save this abysmal adaptation of the comics that, embarrassed by the source material it's based on, delivers a woefully bland and uninspired take on Green Lantern that's another miss for the DCU."

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Lanterns is now streaming in its entirety on HBO Max.

@ProfessorWhy - This show got FAR less viewership than Penguin and it only got 1 season....and yet the Gunn squad thinks this turd of a show should get a second season.

The series clearly lacked having a scene with Sinestro offering Hal a reach around. Could’ve also used more neck snapping…Lots more neck snapping…………..

@vegetaray -
Step 1- snap neck
Step 2- rob grave
Step 3- appoint self independent police officer who answers to no one.

Just like all the DC classics

They are making season 2. The show was widely received well. Was the ending perfect? No. But I cannot wait to see the show.

"Critics have widely praised Lanterns, but comic book fans seem to have a different take on the latest DCU project." Wow what a shocker.

The last we heard, the series was doing well in the ratings and I hope the creatives keep ignoring toxic idiots like Josh and most of the commenters on this website and do their own thing as it's working for normal people

I liked it, but the finale was a miss for me. It just seemed that the whole reveal around the murder was underwhelming. Not to mention, it still doesn't sit right with me that a murderer is still free and in a position of power after killing Hal. I really was hoping they'd do more with Sinestro as well, but there's always the possibility we can get more of his story shown down the road, I guess🤷🏾‍♂️

Rotten Tomatoes audience scores matters now cause it means something negative for the DCU and Josh‘s continuous negative spin articles lmao. The shows objectively a critical and streaming success (implying that it’s not because it hasn’t out streamed syndicated cultural phenomenon shows like The Big Bang Theory and Lost is just a bad take for countless reasons) so now the focus needs to be on fandom backlash to fit the narrative that the DCU is destined for failure since its success complicates that narrative.

Almost 90%, then Ellison not only doesn't fire Gunn but actively supports his 10 year plan LIKE I TOLD YOU and the #RestoreTheSnyderverse thing is on it's last legs.

Now it's 70%.

Wow. Who'd da thunk?

Let's see if I got this right. Warner Brothers makes a highly budgeted Green Lantern Comic Book film in 2011 full of colors, and glowing space laser beams and slapstick comedy that the "comic book fans" are clamoring for and loses money on that venture.

They then make a moderately budgeted grounded and character driven Green Lantern Comic Book TV show and it becomes the talk of the Internet with glowing critic reviews and is watched as signified by increasingly higher viewership ratings and what Warner Brothers should do is go back to what Comic book fans want. The same people that did not show up for the 2011 film or any of the other films made in that same format whereas EVERY grounded show or film has thrived.

Gee...what should Warner Brothers do going forward.

This show was a breath of fresh air and revived a dead franchise. The same way Batman Begins brought back a dead Batman franchise. Whether one liked the finale or not taken together this show was massive success.

@Forthas - People were more discerning back then and it was a bad film, so its a flawed comparison.
I actually find it quite disappointing that people think this was good let alone well written but then Avatar is one of the highest grossing movies, so hey, different strokes
Forthas
Forthas - 10/8/2026, 9:24 AM
@Radders - Not that I hold critic ratings in such high regard these days given the amount of shills that are used to boost those ratings, but this show was positively received by critics. I loved the show even if I don't think it was perfect and the Finale left much to be desired. But the acting was stellar, the story was gripping and layered, and the setting was relatable if at the heart of these live action films and show you ask yourself "what would that comic book character be like in the real world?* In that respect the show delivered the goods.

So was James Gunn's Superman. Be consistent if you're gonna start shilling
Forthas
Forthas - 10/8/2026, 1:48 PM
@FireGunn - If it is objectively terrible, then the objective metrics would show a decline in viewership, and a consensus in the reviews.

When did I claim not to like comic books? What you must understand is that these shows and films tell a comic book-inspired story. The real question is: if you don't like the medium that places the live-action superhero in a realistic place why don't you stop watching them? The whole point of putting these comic book-inspired stories is to show what it would be like in real life. Comic books do not translate well to live action, with some exceptions. Warner Brothers tried the hyper comic-booky film in 2011, and it failed!!!!

Why don't you just ignore my previous statement, "Not that I hold critic ratings in such high regard these days given the amount of shills that are used to boost those ratings..." But of course you would do that? You have an agenda to push!
FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/8/2026, 2:06 PM
@Forthas - "If it is objectively terrible, then the objective metrics would show a decline in viewership, and a consensus in the reviews."

Stranger Things Season 5 and Game of Thrones Season 7 and 8 are some of the highest viewed seasons of all time and they were all critically acclaimed GOT in particular won [frick]ing Oscars. Who gives a shit? The transformers films are a the most watched shows are almost all terrible (reality tv, game shows, soap operas, garbage like Marshalls), the most watched/highest grossing movies are mostly corporate slop, and the most sold games every year are shitty ball and gun games. "Objective metrics" don't determine quality.

"When did I claim not to like comic books? What you must understand is that these shows and films tell a comic book-inspired story."

No they didn't. Absolutely nothing in Lanterns is like the comics. The characters are 100% different that they might as well be completely original, the backstories have been changed, the lore has been changed, the mythos has been made fun of and destroyed. Hal Jordan is a dead racist that died in his first appearance and John Stewart is a rogue villain.

"The real question is: if you don't like the medium that places the live-action superhero in a realistic place why don't you stop watching them?"

Because I had hope we'd get away from the garbage of being afraid of comic books like Bryan Singer was when he did the X-Men. The entire MCU shows that comic books CAN and DO translate to live action. The MCU is extremely fantastical. Saying comic books don't translate into live action is like saying sci-fi books or fantasy books like LOTR or GOT don't translate into live action. It's complete dogshit and an obvious lie made by corporate so they don't have to try and spend a little bit more money. It's already been disproven numerous amounts of times.

"The whole point of putting these comic book-inspired stories is to show what it would be like in real life."

That is your opinion sure.

"Comic books do not translate well to live action, with some exceptions."

DO I need to say anymore?

"Warner Brothers tried the hyper comic-booky film in 2011, and it failed!!!!"

Yes, because it was absolutely terrible. Not because it was comic booky.

"Why don't you just ignore my previous statement, "Not that I hold critic ratings in such high regard these days given the amount of shills that are used to boost those ratings..." But of course you would do that? You have an agenda to push!"

Then why bring it up in the first place other than to shill? If the shills that loved Superdogshit 2025 shilled for that, what makes you think they wouldn't shill for this? Is it only because you like it is why you'd bring the critic ratings up? If so, who's really pushing an agenda?

Animated shows, like Creature Commandos, always have inflated scores on IMDb, RT, etc. Not as many people watch them, and those who do tend to be big fans of that format. But most live-action movie watchers actually don’t like anime and animated shows, don’t watch them, and don’t rate them. So it skews the ratings. Take the animated Star Wars shows, for example. They tend to rate higher than the films. But most film-goers would never watch them in a million years. I watched some of the Clone Wars with my kids when they were growing up, and wanted to blow my brains out. I felt the same way watching Creature Commandos — the storytelling was almost nonexistent. There is some good animation out there (Into the Spider-verse, for example), but far too much of it is gimmicky, relying on stilted dialogue and corny animated effects without any regard to character development.

@RicoD - Clone Wars Season 7x9-12 is the best Star Wars to ever exist. Terrible argument.

Ahh yes , that audience score sure is a good reflective measurement of how people may feel about the finished product and couldn’t possibly be reflected by review bombers & such huh?.

Also Josh , if you are now paying attention to audience reviews too then I guess the Venom movies being in the late 70’s-early 80’s means they are good…

You are pathetic dude and using audience reviews that can be manipulated inauthentically on RT is a new low.
