Lanterns: DC Studios Officially Releases The New Oath - Will John Stewart Be Known As The Dark Lantern?

DC Studios has officially released a clip from the recent season finale of Lanterns, featuring John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) reciting his new Dark Lantern(?) oath...

The season finale of Lanterns ends with John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) charging Hal Jordan's (Kyle Chandler) decommissioned ring with the power battery Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) created and taking his first flight, but he doesn't use the standard Green Lantern oath.

At the urging of Halogram, John forges his own path as an "independent contractor" who will watch over the Earth while Guy Gardner continues to police the cosmos.

"In Brightest Day, In Darkest Night, I’ll embrace my fear, I’ll do what’s right. I choose this ring, I choose this fight, in service to this lantern's light."

Co-creator and writer Tom King has confirmed that Stewart isn't a Yellow Lantern - although the power source does have "a bit of yellow in it, has a bit of fear in it” - but has entered uncharted waters as a brand-new Lantern.

“John is not a hundred percent a Green Lantern anymore. He has an unsanctioned lantern that has a bit of yellow and a bit of fear in it,” King said in a recent interview. “So he’s not saying the same oath as every other Green Lantern — just like a Yellow Lantern or an Orange Lantern says something different. John is this utterly unique creation that he chose for himself. So getting his own unique oath seemed to line up very much with the lore and where we’re going from here.”

We have no idea what moniker (if any) Stewart will adopt in the DCU going forward, but there's speculation that it might be the "Dark Lantern" after some concept art of Sinestro's power battery was shared online.

We're not so sure about that, but it's certainly a possibility. Another theory posits that John may drop the colors altogether and will simply be known as "The Lantern."

DC Studios has now officially released a clip featuring John reciting his new oath, which you can check out below.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Dark Lantern sounds kinda dumb. Rather just see him call himself Emerald Knight or Darkstar then

@bkmeijer1 - Just some made up Gunn DCU bs ...he was never called that in the comics. In the comics, John didn't choose the Darkstars over the Green Lantern Corps. He joined because the Corps was effectively gone.

I loath when writers veer off so much from source material and just start pulling shet out of their ass.

Hal’s dead, Guys a pushover and John isn’t even a real Green Lantern.

I had such high hopes for this show and the franchise. All crushed by shetty writers who spit in the face of what actually worked previously.

Shame.

“In Darkest Night”

…. why it gotta be “darkest” night?

What’s wrong with BLACKEST night? 🤔

@Odekahn - In fairness, Alan Scott's original oath from the 40s says "darkest."

Just call him the black Lantern. Everybody already did before. It was his sole trait. Always has been. "Who's John Stewart? Oh, he's the black one."

And it's lore accurate:

Chocolate lantern, thank you very much. Sinestro's lantern for sure has a failsafe built into it. He owns John as soon as he recharged, and that should've been obvious to him. Hal-ogram suspected this.

@MarkCassidy - Dark Lantern? The idiot writers of this show think they have to call him something Black, Onyx, Dark in case the audience is too stupid to remember that hes black.

My issue with the new oath is mostly it doesn’t fit into John’s arc. At no point does he learn the lesson that fear has value or admit that he has always in some way been afraid so the oath itself feels like it comes out of nowhere.
