The Batman Part II Production Paused After Director Matt Reeves Steps Away To Focus On A "Family Matter"

The Batman Part II has already been delayed multiple times, but even the movie's 2028 release date may not stick after filmmaker Matt Reeves has had to pause production due to a family matter.

Deadline has confirmed that production has been paused on The Batman Part II. Filmmaker Matt Reeves is said to be stepping away for personal reasons, which, understandably, have not been disclosed at this time.

You may recall claims that the reason the sequel's script was coming together so slowly was because Reeves may have been dealing with a serious personal issue. Those rumours have resurfaced today, but whatever the case may be, we're wishing the director and his family all the best at this time.

Confirming the news, DC Studios shared a brief statement with the trade, stating, "Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios, and we look forward to continuing the journey soon."

Filming had been underway in London before production was halted ahead of a planned February 18, 2028 release (before multiple delays, the movie had been scheduled to open last week). According to this report, "Sources say it is too early to say whether the stoppage will have an effect on the release date."

There's a huge amount of excitement for The Batman Part II, especially as there's still nothing to suggest the DCU has found its Caped Crusader (The Brave and the Bold has seemingly fallen by the wayside since being announced at the start of 2023).

"It’s so ambitious," Robert Pattinson recently said of Reeves' sequel. "I mean, I sort of said the other day on something that the first one was a different take on a Batman movie, and this one is another. It’s a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it keeps elements of the kind of feel of it. But it just feels really ambitious, and I’m excited to see how it turns out."

Only time will tell what happens to The Batman and when production will resume. It's not easy bringing work on a major blockbuster to a halt, so as frustrating as any potential delay may be, it's extremely important to remember that whatever's happening with Reeves is likely very serious.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script by him and Mattson Tomlin, The Batman Part II stars Robert Pattinson, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, Charles Dance, Jayme Lawson, Gil Perez-Abraham, Sebastian Koch, and Brian Tyree Henry.

The Batman Part II is set to be released in theaters on February 18, 2028.

Hope everything is alright with his family. It would be a shame to delay this for the eighth time.

@Batmandalorian - At this stage I really do wonder.... i mean obviously something's going on, but it had been for a while and the fact that they allowed him the time to com back with the sequel meant they probably thought it was handled and ok for him to still be in charge of such a massive production.

@Batmandalorian - I have no idea, but if I had to guess, a family member has cancer. That's not a fact or even a rumor, but it seems plausible.

Family over film, but...wow. These Batman films just do not want to be made.

I know it's not in the cards, but Pattinson is such an auteur that I would have the utmost confidence in him taking over creative control of the franchise.

Damn , I hope everything is ok with Reeves and his family since we had rumblings when the script was taking so long that it might have been due to personal reasons aswell…

As much as I want to see this film as a big fan of the first one and The Penguin , it’s not that important so he should take care of his business and come back when he can.

I do hope things get back to normal quickly and production resumes sooner then later so fingers crossed!!.

This will definitely be the last Pattinson Batman movie.

Other than that..it takes as long as it takes.

@UnderBelly - Not if it makes a billion. No one will care how long it takes to make as long as it makes money and is really good.

We had that before.

I wish him and his family the very best, but at this point the studio should step in and replace him with somebody else (in fact this should have already happened years in the past).

It is ridiculous to have the first Batman movie in a trilogy in early 2022 and not get the 2nd part 6 years later.

@MarvelZombie616 - The movie has been filming for 4 months now, so it wouldn't make sense to take such a drastic measure when there's only a month or two left of filming.

Take your time family first. And even so, still a while before that February 2028 release. Can push back a little while if needed

Maybe Matt should just call it and move away from the whole project / projects until he’s ready to start working again. There’s clearly something serious going on behind the scenes and focusing on getting himself healthy should always be the focus no matter what. Having this movie looming as something he ~needs to finish~ probably isn’t going to do him any favors while he’s dealing with whatever serious issues he has going on. I just really hope it’s not something health related.

It's unfortunate, but shit happens. Too bad we don't have another season of Penguin to tide us over until this is released.

This movie is NEVER going to be made! Should’ve gone full steam on the DCU Batman instead of a long gestating sequel to a Batman movie that was mid at best!

I feel like this should have been cancelled a long time ago, so that the pressure of the film, deadlines, and fanbase wouldn't be an active factor on his mind. Yeah, I imagine he'd be upset, but sometimes what's best isn't what's wanted. I think it would have been best for him to not have this lingering thread above him while he addresses what needs to be addressed. Down the road maybe, after he's taken some time to do what he needs to do, and a DCU Batman is more established, then talk of maybe picking up could be a thing. Instead, they're allowing a very well received director handle personal issues, with a heavy IP on his back, take time off. The DCU needs its Batman, and Matt Reeves needs to be free of high-profile commitment for whatever he has going on. This situation isn't healthy for either.

I wonder how long they have left in shooting now?.

Please correct me if I’m wrong but i think they started filming sometime in June so about 3 months or so and usually productions of this scale take 4-6 months so they could be wrapping up shortly or going into December which means there still could be a fair amount to film.

Regardless , i hope Reeves comes back after resolving his family matters which hopefully aren’t big or severe and finishes the film!!.

On a much lighter note...yeah go ahead and just drop this on HBO Max whenever it's done. We'll be checking for the e-mail.

This franchise is cursed. With that said, I wish him and his family all the best, and I hive WB and DC major credit for sticking with him, as it would have been far easier to move on without him.
