The season finale of Lanterns (the show hasn't been officially renewed for a second run, but season 2 is in early development) is now streaming on HBO Max, and "Dirt and Stars" proved to be about as polarizing as you'd expect for the final episode of a series that has divided opinion from the very beginning.

The hour did provide us with answers to the show's central mysteries (whether they were satisfactory is up for debate), and established John Stewart as a brand-new, "unsanctioned" Lantern who will protect the Earth while Guy Gardner handles the cosmos.

During an interview with EW, showrunner Chris Mundy was asked if Stewart can technically be considered a Green Lantern since he broke away from the Corps with a new lantern forged by the villainous Sinestro.

"It’s definitely something that could be addressed if and when the show moves forward. We thought of him as being Green Lantern of Earth, but of course he’s more or less blackmailing the Guardians at the moment. So it’s both an empowered and precarious situation all at once."

As for Sinestro and the lantern he created for Manhunter/human hybrid Noah Macon, Mundy confirmed that it was "a lantern of willpower but [unintentionally] infused with fear."

"We talk so much about fear in general over the course of the season, for obvious reasons. Part of John’s realization and even Hal’s through the Halogram was you need to accept it and embrace it a little bit. Don’t pretend like it doesn’t exist. True courage and true heroism comes from understanding things are frightening and then overcoming them. So it all was born of that. It became a physical manifestation of the thing we were talking about. There’s a Bernadette [Jasmine Cephas Jones] line in 103 where she says like, “Courage is just fear that said its prayers.” We bounced around and touched on it a bunch of different times over the course of the season. Hopefully not in a preachy way, but we tried to layer it in where we could."

A lot of persistent fan theories did not pan out, including the expectation that William Macon would turn out to be Black Hand, and Antaan and his alien allies would be revealed as Atrocitus and the Red Lanterns.

Mundy says these characters were never considered.

"No. We really didn’t. We wanted to keep it pretty clean. At the end of episode 5 when all the s--- is raining down in Rushville, there was some talk at a certain point — because the whole water tower, which was full of darkness, had gone — we had a scene in the writers’ room in our heads where that darkness was still encroaching on the town and various other Lanterns in the Corps. came and blew it away. That was the one time we would’ve seen the others, but we ended up not doing it just because it pulled focus from our guys at that point."

Finally, Mundy weighed in on the introduction of Amie Mackenzie as Carol Ferris. Is this setting up the Star Sapphires? Ehh, probably not.

"The funeral was going to be lonely. We needed it for the story we were telling, but that is the one relationship that had some resonance. In a strange way, we wanted someone to be there for Hal, other than just Kerry. And in a strange way, it almost showed how many other people were not there by having Carol there. It just felt right. She was always gonna be there, and we never really questioned it."

"What if we had a character who hated the Manhunters and wanted revenge because they destroyed his homeworld? That already exists? Well who cares? I'm sure we'll do it better!"

I enjoyed the show overall but the lack of constructs, especially 0 in the finale, kinda made the show pointless.

@lazlodaytona - I think the show had a solid foundation. It just needed 1 more writer to take a Crack at it and about 20 million more in budget. It clearly had rough parts in the finale and we needed more constructs.

Adding more green lantern abilities and more sensible conclusion would elevate this show from a 7 to a 9 in my book

@Vigor - completely agree

@lazlodaytona - It's why I usually only get so invested in these shows. These studios make it clear only so much money is going into these projects. Most of the time I don't think they should happen, but we live in a streaming age and content is apparently king.

@lazlodaytona - The budget was clearly an issue on the show. The bad guys had an entire arsenal of alien weapons in their bunker and they used their smoke machine twice and it looked kinda cheap.

@Truebeliever333 - pretty much. You'd think they'd at least spend a little more on the finale.

"We needed it for the story we were telling."

The story where Hal is not friends with Oliver, Barry, Tom, Kilowog, Tomar-Re, Clark, Bruce, Arisia, Salakk, Katma, or Wally... Where he's too cool to wear his uniform. And get shot by a cop because he threatened a computer.

Do Lindelof and King just like breaking things, or did they genuinely think that people would find this ending satisfying?

I want S2 to be more epic in scope and feel like more of a superhero show. There are just so many Corps out there that they can easily introduce multiple Earth Lanterns who have to work together to stop universal threats like Parallax.

That sounds exciting and all but how can the show continue without Kyle? His and Aaron Pierre chemistry is what made the show tick, having him as a halogram for an entire season would be a waste and replacing him with Guy…no

@Gambito - Its a Superhero TV Show, Kyle Chandler's going to be in it until Lanterns gets cancelled. Tom Cavanagh on CW's Flash played Harrison Wells (and other characters), died 4 times on different seasons, and was brought back every season.

@mastakilla39 - from a story perspective I see no problem but I read he only signed for a single season and while he enjoyed the experience he was already thinking of retirement.
A damn shame if he doesn’t come back, I’ll say he can give us 2 more seasons

How in the absolute F we just go 8 episodes with no giant green fist punching anything? We got a bird and some force fields. Unbelievable.

Lindelof is a complete radical leftist piece of crap, and it shows in his work. Hal Jordan GL has been turned from a hero into a piece of sh!t and killed. John Stewart has been turned into a piece of sh!t and takes over as GL while mooning the Guardians.

The Superman movie was okay, but everything else from the new DCFU has been garbage. Supergirl, Peacemaker season 2, and Lanterns were just awful.

Let Gunn continue his mediocre Superman movies, but get him out of his overlord chair. He just can't handle it.

So the ring makes force fields, birds, and holograms of yourself. According to this show. Well that saved me from reading decades worth of comics

Season Two will bomb and that will be the end of it. This season got true GL fans watching to see what happened but most left quite disenfranchised.
