Lanterns Writer Tom King Explains Why [Spoiler] Faced No Repercussions For Killing Hal Jordan

In a new interview, Lanters writer Tom King explains the reasoning behind Hal Jordan's killer facing zero repercussions for murdering the hero in cold blood...

The season finale of Lanterns proved highly divisive for several reasons, but one of the most unpopular creative choices was the reveal that Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) really was dead dead.

Jordan's murderer was also revealed to be Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald), who shot her lover for... promising to keep her, her Manhunter son, and all of the people of Rushville safe by relocating them while they figure out their next move.

Okay, so it wasn't quite that simple, and it's entirely possible that Kerry didn't exactly trust everything Jordan was telling her (he did almost kill his own partner in his relentless pursuit of Zoe, after all), but a lot of fans just didn't buy it - and the fact that Kane never faced any repercussions probably didn't help.

While speaking to The Ringer-Verse, writer Tom King explains why it was decided that Kerry wouldn't be punished for killing Hal.

"We had a big debate about this. We were stuck in that doubt: 'Should Kerry Kane be punished?' Nothing could punish her more than the fact that she did what she did and has to live with it. Prison isn't worse than the feeling of guilt."

Ehh, a lot of people would probably disagree with you there, Tom.

To be fair, from John Stewart's (Aaron Pierre) perspective, it did make at least some sense for him to let Kane off the hook, since sending her to prison would run the risk of Noah giving in to his genocidal nature. That said, one could argue that evil very much "escaped his sight" here. No wonder he changed the oath.

In a separate interview, showrunner Chris Mundy weighed in on the "is Hal Jordan racist" debate.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

@Irregular - No idea where ot goes if they're not just tackling the spectrum one sesason at a time. I don't even think another season serves a purpose, unless this just happens again with Kyle, which there's no set up for...or any other lantern for that matter.

@Irregular - this show sucks. The story sucks. The characters suck. And it all boilds down to the fact thay the writers suck. Shitting all over Hal Jordan and John Stewart is not my idea of a great Green Lantern reboot.

@ModHaterSLADE - her son hasn’t hurt anyone yet. He’s a potential weapon of mass destruction, but all he did was break Sinestro out of prison and chose to not hurt others afterwards. Realizing he wants to try to be a good person.

But I think Kathy should turn herself in.

Just more horse puckey, in a show with one of the most powerful devices in the universe that nobody ever wanted to charge, and that made a green bird and some force fields.

"Nothing could punish her more than the fact that she did what she did and has to live with it".

Easy, first you takeaway the kid because she's not mentally sound to be raising it in the first place, then you throw her murdering ass in prison and then she can feel that guilt while also missing the kid while she's doing the time for her crime.

Oh god that weak a** guilt-is-worse-than-consequence excuse. The guilt is what makes the rest of the punishment even worse; without it, what is supposed to be special about the guilt compared to any old self-tortured soul on the street.

Here's a thought: Maybe you shouldn't have killed Hal Jordan to begin with.

Tom King had no business being on this series. The upcoming Mister Miracle series? Sure. His maxiseries was amazing. He knows Scott.

He has barely really written Green Lantern. Geoff Johns should have spearhead the entire thing. His revitalization gave every character meaning and actually gave some deep mythology to the Corps.

But hey, Gunn will do what Gunn wants. The DCU is his toy box, remember? As the head of DC Films, he should take a page from Feige. Is Feige always perfect? No, but he also doesn't SOLELY make the projects HE wants.

I don’t know about you guys but I know whenever the person I’m in love with suggests we simply move to keep me and my son safe that my first gut reaction is to murder them in cold blood. Like seriously what other options does a person have? They wanted us to move out of our crappy dying small town where I wasn’t even born or raiaed and my son is about to move out of anyway. Murder really is the only option.

I didn't initially have a problem with Hals death....but after seeing the chemistry and John's rejection of The Guardians and Oa....I don't know man. Was hoping this would transition into movie so we could get more from that media. Im not sure what Im looking forward to with no Hal and Earth bound John Stewart...

@BlackStar25 - yeah

The status quo simultaneously intrigues me because I’m interested to see John as an unofficial Lantern basically and how that develops but I am gonna miss Hal and that dynamic…

Also GL has had a fair share of earthbound stories but it would be nice to more if the cosmos!!.

Guilt? She was hanging out at football games and shit having a blast. The guardian should have came and claimed her ass for killing a Green Lantern.

One thing I find really strange & contradictory nowadays is that people ask for characters to be flawed but once one shows that either it be impulsiveness or selfishness then it’s taken as bad writing or out of character…

Kerry has been shown to be someone who did not come from a good life in Gotham but found one via Zoe in Rushville where she had a family and a position of power in the town so her panicking about that being over when we know that she in 2016 was also concerned about that and wanted Hal to leave before anything bad truly happened (which it did) was a recurring thing made sense hence she made an impulsive and selfish decision for herself and her son in that moment which sorry to break to everyone does happen in real life where one move can change everything.

She obviously didn’t mean too and regretted it afterwards because she genuinely did love him so John not turning her in or allowing her to do so herself made sense because Hal would 100% have not wanted her to imo and understood…

Plus she needs to be there for Noah because for a kid already struggling with his nature , she needs to be there so he can try to stay on the right path so if you take his mom away then it’s just game over already thus John was giving him a chance to override his “programming” essentially like he did his.

Oh and I think Mundy said it great , Hal’s not a racist but being a 50-60 year old man , he’s likely also perhaps ignorant of some things aswell which is fine because we all have that imo!!.

Tom King always writes about himself. Because he thinks he is most important. DC insiders have said he told them he committed war crimes when he was in the CIA. If true, he was never punished for them.

"Nothing could punish her more than the fact that she did what she did and has to live with it".

Well, there is the law and Green Lantern is supposed to be a space cop but whatever. Stuarts first act is to let the person who murdered his mentor go because she had feelings.

Actually, it because the people that write these shows think because woman are some excluded class and can do whatever they want and never be held accountable. Shoot a guy right in the head because she freaked out? Sure, she should just continue to be a cop on top of it. Hal didn't even do anything, she literally just lost her shit for no reason.
