Zack Snyder Reacts To MAN OF STEEL Topping James Gunn's SUPERMAN Box Office Haul

Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that Zack Snyder has reacted to a social media post that pointed out Superman's inability to top 2013's Man of Steel at the worldwide box office. You can learn more here...

Inevitably, many DC fans spent the summer comparing Superman's box office performance to how Man of Steel performed in 2013. With so many people still upset that Henry Cavill's time as the hero has ended, it was perhaps inevitable that the movies would be pitted against each other.

Ultimately, Superman earned $616.7 million worldwide compared to Man of Steel's $670.1 million haul (adjusted for inflation, that's $934.29 million), meaning Snyder's movie attracted a larger audience. There are many reasons why that happened—which have already been discussed in depth—but on paper, Man of Steel was the more successful movie, financially speaking.

Snyder recently joined Instagram, and various fan accounts have since spotted that he's liked a reel comparing Superman and Man of Steel's respective box office hauls (the video was originally posted in August).

The post was making the point that Superman was falling short of Man of Steel at the time, as it was captioned, "Just going to leave this here."

Snyder gets on well with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, and the two have even appeared in an episode of Rick and Morty together. There doesn't appear to be any bad blood or rivalry between the two filmmakers, but can you really blame Snyder for liking a post that pointed out that his reboot was the bigger hit of the two?

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. Warner Bros. Discovery was happy with how Superman performed, and Gunn is already working on a sequel, Man of Tomorrow. As for the "Snyderverse," it's dead and very much looks set to remain that way.

Gunn actually reached out to Snyder during pre-production on Superman to ask for his take on one crucial part of the hero's costume. "One of the biggest questions was, 'Were we gonna have trunks, or were we gonna not have trunks?'" he said over the summer. "I talked to Zack Snyder, who was like, 'I tried a billion different versions with the trunks, and at the end of the day, I tried it, but I just couldn’t get there.'"

"And I was feeling exactly the same way," Gunn noted. "Theoretically, I liked the idea of trunks because it’s the Superman I grew up with."

@HashTagSwagg - Superman made more domestically in its first two weeks than almost the entire total run for MoS. Snyder had the privilege of riding Nolans coattails and for the last time... the only reason MoS made more worldwide was because of the number from China. China didn't boycott American cinema back then.. of course mush brain dumb [frick]s are too stupid to understand these things. Which has higher reviews? Go back to Wendy's Snyder

@HashTagSwagg - Agreed. MOS had some problems (the scene with Johnathan telling Clarke he maybe should have let those kids die, Clarke not trying to save him, all the destruction in Metropolis, Supes not doing some more “saving” hum not smiling enough, and the questionable neck snap), but I enjoyed it a lot and found it to be a much better film. When I left the theatre after MOS I felt like I really enjoyed a Superman film I had just watched. Gunn’s Superman had some entertainment value but left me feeling very dissatisfied and disappointed

@Bucky74 - Snyder, for all his faults, made Superman look like a movie, Gunn made his "super""man" look cheap, unfinished and more in line with a cartoon instead of a film.

@TheVisionary25 - agreed, bigger hit is definitely subjective and it’s comparing apples to oranges. That’s like saying man of steel is a bigger bit than Batman begins which isn’t true. Batman begins spawned one of the most beloved superhero trilogies whereas after man of steel, much of the universe was crash and burn. At the time, man of steel had a mixed reception.

Too bad Gunn’s Superman is the better film imo…

That aside , the perception around superhero films and even the state of the box office has changed so much in the 12 year gap between MOS and Superman 2025 that it almost feels unfair to judge though it is pleasantly surprising that the latter still got somewhat close to the box office total of the former in this day & age.

Anyway , it is what it is so hopefully MOT does even better!!.

Never forget that Zack's 5-movie plan for Superman was to end with him being cucked by Batman and having to look after his kid that he had with Lois.

WB sees this and agrees with the vast majority of the fandom. Gunn's Superman was a fad. The people who liked it forgot about it and the people who still remember are Gunn nuthuggers, who are in the minority. The vast majority of people have written this and the rest of the DCU off. Time for a reboot. WB knows who to call.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

One of the defining characteristics of today's world is polarization. People's emotionality and lack of rationality tend to create two opposing sides, perpetuating pointless arguments. And sites like this one exploit this to generate conversation and, ultimately, to monetize their content.

@santiagoch - Western culture has been demoralized and feminized.
Rational critical thinking is discouraged and knee-jerk emotional responses are now the norm.

People now live in self contained bubbles ("social" media) in which they tune out any dissenting opinions and vilify anyone who disagrees with them.
Our overlords have this docile and weak generation right where they want them.

It has nothing to do with the film itself. As much as I like MoS, even I understand the box office number is not comparable. We're talking about a movie pre-covid vs post-covid and in an environment where tickets are much more expensive and streaming has become way more popular.

This speaks more about how Zack tarnished the brand over the quality of his movie in comparison.

Gunn’s movie reviewed better with critics and the general audience. It’s a more favourable adaption of the source material and it’s getting a sequel.

It’s getting a sequel

@IKidYouNotMan - Gunn's piece of shit has a lower metacritic rating, the same imdb score after just 4 months (it's bound to go lower at this point), and made less money. What really tarnished the brand?
