THOR Star Chris Hemsworth Reveals Whether He And Brother Liam Were Competing For God Of Thunder Role

Avengers: Endgame star Chris Hemsworth has reflecting on being cast as the God of Thunder in Thor, revealing whether he and brother Liam Hemsworth really were competing with each other for the lead role.

When Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were cast in Thor, they were largely dismissed as "nobodies." It seems Marvel Studios wanted unknowns, though, as we know of at least a few other names considered for the MCU's God of Thunder, including Chris' brother, Liam.

He'd go on to star in The Hunger Games movies, famously dated Miley Cyrus, and is now gearing up to take over from Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in the final two seasons of The Witcher

Chris, now a major movie star with several franchises to his name, has opened up on both his and Liam's attempts to be cast as Thor, revealing that while they both auditioned, they were never going up against each other simultaneously.

Asked if he was worried about Liam landing the role instead of him, the Avengers: Endgame star responded, "No, 'cause I was told I didn't have the part at that point, so I was excited for him. A little jealous maybe, but I was excited for him."

"Then when I was allowed to re-audition, it was when he was out of the picture," Hemsworth added. "So we were never neck and neck. It was either I was involved, then wasn't, and he was involved then wasn't, then I was involved."

Liam has yet to join the MCU, though his and Chris' brother, Luke, played an Asgardian actor portraying Thor on stage in Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder

The latter featured appearances from other members of Chris' family, with his wife - Fast Five star Elsa Pataky - doubling for Natalie Portman's Jane Foster and their daughter, India Rose, taking on the role of Gorr the God Butcher's daughter, Love.

"So Natalie wasn't there, and we were doing re-shoots, we were in Hong Kong," Hemsworth explains. "And they had brought in a handful of lovely ladies who were potentially gonna be the stand-in for Jane. And then I said 'My wife just landed, why don't we just get her?'"

"It was my idea that [India] could be in the film," he noted. "And then so, I filmed her on my iPhone reading a bunch of the lines. And then I sent it to [director] Taika [Waititi] and the people at Marvel."

Given the tepid response to Thor: Love and Thunder - which Hemsworth has repeatedly admitted wasn't a good take on the character - we don't know whether Love will return when the Odinson eventually blasts back into action.

It seems a team-up was once meant to be the plan, but as she's a newly created character for the MCU, it won't be hard to write her out of future stories.
