LANTERNS: HBO Shares Snarky Response To Fans Complaining About Trailer's Lack Of Green

With fans expressing frustration over the lack of colour—specifically, green—in the first Lanterns trailer, the HBO Max X account has shared a snarky response on social media.

The first trailer for Lanterns was released yesterday (plans to debut it today were derailed when HBO Max accidentally leaked the entire thing), and the response from fans has been mixed.

DC Studios has said from the start that Lanterns would be more True Detective than Guardians of the Galaxy, but seeing that in action proved largely disappointing. The sneak peek showed Hal Jordan taking flight and at least teased a Green Lantern power battery and Ch'p, but cosmic action likely won't be part of this story.

There was also a noticeable lack of green in the trailer, whether it was Hal Jordan's drab suit or the fact that we didn't see a single Construct from the ring being shared by him and John Stewart.

Addressing the backlash on social media, the HBO Max X account shared a snarky, "What do you mean there's no green?" alongside a screenshot of a green food basket from the preview.

Lanterns' marketing campaign isn't off to the best start, but there's plenty of time to turn that around. A future trailer may show more cosmic imagery, but how wise it was of HBO to make a joke out of the backlash is very much TBD.

"It was an enormous shoot. It was of a grand scale in every sense of the word," John Stewart actor Aaron Pierre teased last year. "We’re all very proud of this and very excited. It’s been a long time coming for many fans and supporters. And I truly hope with all my heart that we make everybody proud and we make everybody thrilled that we did this, because we’re thrilled and we’re proud."

"When you watch it, it almost makes you go, ‘You know what? If I can just figure out where to get my application, I could be in the Green Lantern Corps," Pierre noted. "The training would be intense, and the responsibility would be enormous, but I might be able to just apply for this and have a go.’ There’s just a relatability to it that is beautiful. Hopefully that resonates with everybody."

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) is serving as showrunner and executive producer and will write Lanterns with Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic book scribe Tom King (Supergirl). The cast includes Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro.

Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO this August. You can read our trailer breakdown here.

Honestly I am very intrigued by this. Kyle Chandler has the arrogant sass of a former fighter pilot and carries it well from what I’ve seen. Combined likely with jaded PTSD from all the crap he’s seen. I’m curious to see how this turns out. Yeah the suit’s a choice. But I’m willing to give this a chance.

@skyshark03191 - Of course. The negative feedback online is over-exaggerated. It’s just a teaser. To condemn the entire show based on a two-minute trailer is ridiculous. From what I saw I wasn’t wowed but I’m intrigued. I once had high enthusiasm for a Green Lantern film and when the failed 2011 version came out (starring Ryan Reynolds) I was left disappointed. Too much silliness, no weight or gravity to the story whatsoever. It almost felt like a parody. This version is nothing but a hard reboot and honestly that’s refreshing. I like the uneven dynamic here between Stewart & Jordan, it’s a competitive relationship with both men fighting together but they both have something to prove.

@skyshark03191 - Agreed the suit leaves something to be desired, but once a green aura is added I think it’ll look just fine. Still holding unusually high expectations for this project. Hope I’m not let down.

@skyshark03191 - The actors have never been the problem. The casting has been praised countless times by the general audience.

Seriously, watch the show first FFS. You looove to bitch and moan more than you actually like CBMs. Pathetic. It doesn't match up to what you had exactly in your head? boo-[frick]ing-hoo. And if you watch it and still hate it? Let it rip by all means. But stop pissing your pants over a trailer, which objectively, looks good.

@theBlackSquare - I get what you mean, however, if people can rave about a piece of marketing for days, why can't they have the opposite response? Also, whether a trailer looks good or not is subjective. I'm sure you've disliked trailers that others thought was good.

theBlackSquare

@Highflyer -

I guess that's the problem, either way – why are you [other people] having such strong feelings about marketing?? It's the thing, it's not the movie, it's marketing.

Sorry to answer your question with a another one, but in terms of objectivity, tell me why you think it's a bad trailer? The acting is good, the production. There's intrigue, peril and suspense. The flying scene doesn't look bad - sorry but it doesn't.

theBlackSquare - 3/5/2026, 10:41 AM
@FireGunn - yes well we all know where you stand, so forgive me if I don't engage too much. btw, I liked the superman teaser and trailer, was pumped to see. But ended up (for me) being one of the worst films I've seen of late.

FireGunn - 3/5/2026, 11:04 AM
@theBlackSquare - "why are you [other people] having such strong feelings about marketing?? It's the thing, it's not the movie, it's marketing." Because the marketing is supposed to bring in an audience. It's supposed to sell us on the show and it did anything but that which means it failed. Not only that, but trailers usually show their BEST scenes to make a good first impression. If THAT was their best, this show is DOA
theBlackSquare
theBlackSquare - 3/5/2026, 11:39 AM
@FireGunn - Judge a book by it's cover then it's your loss pal.

Also best scenes?? What are you talking about? A good trailer shows Stewart going off the cliff. A bad one would show him saving himself.

@FireGunn - Hey wallets Cl... oh, sorry, I mean Fire Gunn, you keep asking people what looks good about this. Let me ask you something. If you've already decided that this isn't for you, why do you comment on each and every article. Do you think WB or your namesake, James Gunn will see your dissatisfaction and go back and change it after the fact, Sonic the Hedgehog style?

@theBlackSquare - "Also best scenes?? What are you talking about? A good trailer shows Stewart going off the cliff. A bad one would show him saving himself."

How many CBM trailers have you watched? All of them show our heroes doing a least one badass move. This shows NOTHING.

@FireGunn - You can call me whatever you want, it means nothing to me coming from somebody who's already been banned at least once. Oh, I absolutely give my honest opinions on things. But if I criticise a trailer, I'll always say that the trailer didn't sell me on the project, not that the show or movie is S#!t, before actually having seen it.
Maybe it's time to reboot the FireGunn! Reboot (again) the WalletsClosed!

@FireGunn - Correct, just look at the shear number of shills and shilling you have to get past to even see a honest take on this awefull trailer. When shameless bootlickers and liars lie in wait to tear down any form of honest desent, it makes commenting feel ultimatly pointless when their comments are only going to be drowned out by "fake" enthusiasm, even the title of this artice is a clumsy form of damage control, fans arnt complaining about there "not being enough green" in the trailer, thats stupid, there complainig about how tone deaf all this feels in regards to the green lantern mythos..as well as how horrible the costume looks. Taking legetimate complaints by many fans and blowing them out of propotion to make them look like screeching babys is pretty low.
