LANTERNS Stills Are Big On The American Heartland, But Lack Any Green Lantern Superpowers

A new batch of stills from DC Studios and HBO's Lanterns have just dropped, but those of you hoping for a taste of Green Lantern action will have to settle for regular Earthbound occurrences.

We've only had a teaser trailer for Lanterns, but for some DC fans, that was enough to write the HBO series off. DC Studios has said from the start that it would be a True Detective-style story set in the American Heartland.

Still, the lack of superpowers in the preview has undoubtedly diminished excitement.

Holding back on revealing Oa, colourful aliens, and Power Ring Constructs is understandable—especially when marketing this to HBO's audience—but even just a single shot of Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan showing what he's capable of would have been welcomed.

The first Lanterns trailer leaked online yesterday, forcing HBO to release it a good 20-or-so hours before it had intended to. Given the largely negative response, today would have been the perfect opportunity to perhaps share a poster or some stills that gave sceptical fans a taste of what they've spent the past day demanding.

Instead, we have some pretty regular-looking stills spotlighting Hal, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), and Kelly Macdonald's character. Despite past speculation, it doesn't appear as if she'll be playing Carol Ferris. And, complaints aside, these are some pretty cool shots from the show.

"I've not had so much fun shooting something as I did that," Chandler previously said of Lanterns. "The people on it were absolutely wonderful, from the top to the bottom. I can't say enough about Chris Mundy and the producers and the DC folks."

"It was an excellent experience, and I expect the show to be as good as the experience I had [making it]," he continued. "Aaron Pierre, I worked with him, and we had a great time- and Kelly Macdonald, it was just fantastic."

Take a closer look at these new Lanterns stills below.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

The pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct.

Lanterns is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes, and is based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO in 2026.

Bro holy SHIT. This is what the like 6th article on this one teaser.

Regardless. As I mentioned on another thread and someone else did as well. I think they're doing a misdirect and the entire teaser is from either the first or first like 2 episodes of the show. I think it will start small and build big. I think they're just holding the more epic stuff for more marketing, trailers, etc. The show doesn't come out for almost 6 months.

@JabbaTheSus - It's done by the same creatives behind Watchmen. I expect things to get a little cosmic in the final 2 episodes at best. Still, audiences of the genre are already tired of that grounded or earthbound or whatever you like to call it approach to comic book IPs in 2026.

@JabbaTheSus - Hey it doesn't matter. Not when there's going to be (checks notes) "5 Things We Learned From The DIVISIVE First Look!" from now until the show releases.

@NinnesMBC - Yea fair enough. Could be like the first season of Netflix Daredevil too. We didn't see Matt suit up until I think the final episode

Cry more. Maybe they're saving all the power stuff for later trailers. Too many people complain about wanting everything in the first trailer. And then they'll complain that they showed too much. People are never pleased about anything.

Bucky74

@FireGunn - Much better. At least they tires for Cosmic fun. The odd thing is that if any franchise lends itself to Gunn’s “Guardians ofThe Galaxy” epic space adventure tone it’s GL. Yet with this they’ve gone in the complete opposite direction for what I can only assume is a budget issue.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 3/5/2026, 1:59 PM
@Bucky74 - Gunn and everyone in charge are morons. Can you imagine placing the Green Lanterns into a low budget tv show and making Clayface a full blown film? Anyone with a brain should see it should be the opposite.

@FireGunn - I love that you have such strong opinions on things you haven’t seen. Also, since you’re in an elevated position that allows you to mock the intelligence of lesser people, what exactly have you created that gives you right to make judgements like that? Do you work in the industry, or are you (probably) just some dork who runs his dork mouth and has to create new profiles because eventually every blocks you?

Clearly, they are not going to show the powers, but they did tease them. How does John Stewart escape a car falling from a cliff if not without the use of Green Lantern's powers? I am totally on board with this more grounded take. If the idiot we all know as James Gunn had made the DCU grounded as well, it could have more easily fit with this and Pattinson's Batman. But he chose a world filled with a Kaiju, cape-wearing super dogs, and all the other over-the-top stuff from Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 3/5/2026, 12:49 PM
@Forthas - The Green Lanterns were never meant to be grounded. They are inherently sci-fi fantastical characters. What works for Batman or even Superman, cannot work for Green Lanterns. Horrible choice

@Forthas -

"chose a world filled with a Kaiju, cape-wearing super dogs, and all the other over-the-top stuff from Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad"

that's what comics is all about
Forthas
Forthas - 3/5/2026, 12:58 PM
@FireGunn - Star Wars was not meant to be grounded, yet one of the best and most acclaimed live action production - Andor - is the most grounded of all of the Star Wars Universe.

Superman was not meant to be grounded, yet the best Superman movie - Man of Steel - is the most grounded of all the Superman films and shows ever made.
Forthas
Forthas - 3/5/2026, 1:04 PM
@vectorsigma - "...that's what comics is all about"

Then read the comics! Funny that comic books are a dying endeavor, but grounded live action films like The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel, Joker, and The Batman are among the most successful films ever. While comic-booky films like Thor Love and Thunder, Ant Man Quantumania, and The Marvels have almost brought Marvel to its knees.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 3/5/2026, 1:06 PM
@Forthas - Andor isn't even remotely grounded. It's mature. Andor is still Star Wars. This is not Green Lantern. This doesn't even look like DC. Man of Steel is not grounded. It's mature. Man of Steel is still Superman.

People really need to figure out what grounded means. You can be grounded and goofy (Kick Ass) and mature and fantastical (BVS)
FireGunn
FireGunn - 3/5/2026, 1:09 PM
@vectorsigma - As @Forthas said, comics are a dying medium for a reason. What works in comics, does not work in live action. The Dark Knight Trilogy is the furthest thing away from the comics and yet it's the best superhero trilogy ever made. I wonder why?

Super pets and over the top CW style nonsense does not work in live action. It works in animation, comics, or movies for kids
Forthas
Forthas - 3/5/2026, 1:16 PM
@FireGunn - Those are "grounded"

Dictionary
Definitions from Oxford Languages

ground·ed
/ˈɡroundəd/

-well balanced and sensible

What makes those films grounded is that they are sensible. It has to be logical within the world you create. People falsely believe that grounded is antithetical to fantastic. It is not. Something that is fantastic can be grounded. In Batman Begins despite the fact that Batman has fantastical devices, when they are presented to Bruce Wayne they are explained using a logical reasoning as to their existence and pseudo-science as to how it works. It then becomes grounded...

FireGunn
FireGunn - 3/5/2026, 1:26 PM
@Forthas - That doesn't negate the fact that TDK is still Batman, Man of Steel is still Superman, and Andor is still Star Wars. This "Green Lantern" show has nothing to do with Green Lantern.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 3/5/2026, 2:02 PM
@Forthas - That’s an excellent point. With go “grounded” or epic and not “Grounded” with a franchise that should be epic and super sci fi
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 3/5/2026, 8:32 PM
@Forthas - you are being too selective. Gotg and the avengers movies are as campy as they could get.

Got to love an unreliable narrator. Let's be clear. This wasn't just 'speculation' this was FULL article about how a 'RELIABLE' source was dead on sure this rumor was true.

Now can we just admit that these 'scoopers' just take wild swings and guess their bullshit?
