Dave Bautista Reveals Why He Turned Down PEACEMAKER Lead Role Despite Being James Gunn's #1 Choice

Last week, Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista was his top pick to play Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad.

Had that happened, the former pro wrestler would have suited up as Chris Smith in the 2021 movie, two seasons of Peacemaker, Superman, and likely 2027's Man of Tomorrow. John Cena ended up being cast in the role, and Gunn put the Drax actor's absence down to money and scheduling.

Talking to ComicBook.com, Bautista broke his silence on turning down a role in the DCEU/DCU and revealed whether he has any regrets.

"I have to say, that one. I really wanted to do that part," the actor acknowledged. "[Gunn] wrote that part for me, and it was meant for me, and it just became a scheduling thing where I just couldn’t do it, because I was doing Army of the Dead. And so it was a scheduling issue that we just could not figure out."

"And I think it was great. It was a blessing in disguise that I didn’t do that, because I have to say, I have to be honest, there’s no way that I would have been able to do that role like John," Bautista continued. "He’s just perfect for it, you know, and I wouldn’t have done it justice, and it wouldn’t have been as successful"

He added, "So, look, and I am, I’m saying that with a bit of envy, you know, I would love it. I just wouldn’t have been able to do the same thing that John does to bring to that character. It wouldn’t have been the same. It wouldn’t have been as good. I can honestly say it wouldn’t have been as good."

Bautista has bid farewell to the MCU after playing Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers franchises. Army of the Dead didn't spawn a new horror franchise on Netflix; we got a pretty forgettable prequel, and the plug was ultimately pulled on an animated prequel.

Still, while the Dune star didn't get to join the DC Universe, he has found plenty of success away from the world of superheroes. Bautista remains eager to join Gunn in the DCU, but admits that he might now be a little long in the tooth to transform into his dream role, Bane.

"I wrote the character of Peacemaker for him, and we offered him the role," Gunn recently shared, "but he was offered two movies, and we weren't paying him a lot, and so he had to go where the money was."

Do you think Bautista would have been a good fit for Peacemaker? Let us know in the comments section below.

He doesn't want to play another superhero movie clown. That's why. He should do more action movies.

@jackbauer884 - Where does he say that? You literally came to a comment section of an article where He gave his honest opinion, to comment that it was a different reason? why? I don't understand internet randoms that think they know more about the actors and the business than the actors and people in the business. I can't wait until Robot girlfriends become more affordable so that people like you will be too busy to come and comment nonsense.

I'm not a big fan of Peacemaker, but I don't think Batista would have played it better. He's not much of a leading man actor.

Haven’t gotten past the second episode. Season 2 is a snooze fest.

@JobinJ - I watched the first one and aside from the totally unnecessary orgy scene, I'd say I enjoyed it. But then at the end they introduced this alternate reality/dimension and then that big fight scene happens and I just lost interest. I dont know what it is about this multiversal stuff, but I cant get into it. It is repellant to me. Maybe one of these days I will get through it.

@Shivermetimbers - for me. With multiverses. Nothing matters. There are no stakes. Cause the characters can always “come back”. It’s lazy.

he will now probably turn up as some multiverse variant based of Peacemaker then at some point.

At least DB gave an honest answer that included a compliment for another actor. Like that.
Peacemaker is ok, though not as compelling as it should be tbh. Not a lot happens and feels a bit like a soap with unusual characters.

He's right. John Cena is perfect casting. Also, it started as a side role and Bautista turned it down for a lead role. It's not rocket surgery. He just went where the money was. Too bad 'ARMY OF THE DEAD' was such a dud. He could have had his own franchise too.

Peacemaker is trash and Cena cannot act, I have watched all his movies except pacemaker, did see suicide squad and was blown way by how bad and gory peacemaker was in it. I believe gunn tanked with Supeman and he is further tanking with Peacemaker, he should have chosen another primary character or a better show to expand the universe. Instead, he picked a, tertiary character only a niche of fans knows, mistake after mistake. Many believe the franchise needed a stronger lead and a more unified direction, rather than relying on divisive humor and characters with limited mainstream familiarity.

Although Bautista is a better actor, Cena was the right guy for the job. It also makes sense that it was written for Dave considering in The Suicide Squad he’s basically the Drax of the group.

Why do I find it funny that his choice was between a Zack Snyder movie or a James Gunn one?.

Oh right , that’s the story of some people on here and DC on screen in general it seems now.

I could maybe see Dave as Peacemaker but I do think he’s right in that the role fits Cena to a tee and I honestly can’t see anyone else as that version of the character at this point…

However if I’m not mistaken , I heard that Gunn had envisioned the character as moreso a Full Metal Jacket-esque rigid drill sergeant character who was more authoritative & aggressive and it was Cena who portrayed him as a “douchey Captain America” which Gunn liked & the rest is history so if the original iteration was different then I could see Bautista playing that type of character moreso then the latter.

Anyway , it worked out for the best though I still hope we see Dave join the DCU soon!!.
