Marvel Studios Has Made Two Baffling Decisions In Recent Weeks - And I'm Not Sure I Can Forgive Them

While Marvel Studios can often do no wrong in the eyes of fans, two streaming decisions have been made in recent weeks that are near-impossible to defend. Can we ever forgive them?

Marvel Studios has made more than a few questionable decisions throughout the Multiverse Saga, but the latest two are particularly baffling. First, Wonder Man was renewed for a second season in March before the decision was reversed just four months later. Now, we've learned that Daredevil: Born Again will end with its third season.

Neither decision makes much sense when you stop and think about what these shows brought to the MCU. Wonder Man was something wholly unique: a Hollywood satire starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams alongside Ben Kingsley's Trevor Slattery. It earned a 91% critics' score and 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Abdul-Mateen II received an Emmy nomination.

Yet Marvel renewed it and then pulled the plug, with reports indicating that a Season 2 writers' room never even opened. That's a strange way to treat a series that had already been given the green light to continue, though like Daredevil: Born Again, low viewership may have been a factor.

Talking of the Man Without Fear, after Marvel's original creative team was replaced during a major overhaul, Dario Scardapane helped turn the series into the TV-MA, street-level continuation fans wanted. Its second season currently sits at 86% with critics and 85% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite that, the axe has fallen.

That's particularly frustrating because Daredevil has been treated as though he exists in his own little corner of the MCU. Spider-Man: Brand New Day was the perfect opportunity to change that. Matt Murdock was actually included in an early version of the movie before being cut, and after all the work Marvel has done to establish Charlie Cox's Daredevil as part of this universe, why keep him so isolated?

The timing makes even less sense when Season 3 is set to reunite Cox with Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones, Mike Colter's Luke Cage and Finn Jones' Iron Fist. We're finally getting a proper Defenders reunion, but now we're being told this is the beginning of the end?

Marvel's handling of showrunner Dario Scardapane also stings. He was brought in after the original Daredevil: Born Again creative team was removed, helping steer the show through one of the most significant creative overhauls in recent memory (and not just in the superhero space). He delivered in a big way. Still, his contract hasn't been renewed, and he won't be there to finish post-production.

While low ratings might have sealed their fate, bad marketing won't have helped. Wonder Man was not positioned as a must-watch MCU series, while Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 received its first trailer on January 27 for a March 24 premiere. That's hardly the kind of passionate campaign you'd expect for one of Marvel's most important returning characters. He was treated like an afterthought.

Both shows represented something the MCU desperately needed during a Multiverse Saga that's been hit-or-miss: experimentation. Wonder Man gave us a Black superhero lead in an offbeat comedy-drama, while Daredevil: Born Again brought back the TV-MA, brutally grounded side of Netflix's Daredevil.

After years of criticism over Marvel playing things too safe, it's difficult not to wonder whether that's exactly what's coming next. If these are the kinds of shows Marvel is willing to abandon, what does that say about the MCU's willingness to take risks in the next Saga? Are we just going to be bombarded by Avengers and X-Men projects? That's not the worst thing, but it's also the ultimate example of playing it safe.

If Wonder Man shows up in an Avengers movie and we see Daredevil in Spider-Man 5, then all will be forgiven. For now, this is a disappointing turn of events as we enter the Multiverse Saga's final stages, and two decisions that will be very hard to move past.

When you fan the flames of negativity throughout each article you write on each show - you don't really get to act surprised when they disappear.

@joshwildling, it really is getting out of control with the negativity. I’ve been coming to this site, and commenting sporadically, since well over a decade… you used to be the only consistently positive thing, but now it just feels lien you’re part of the same echo chamber I block and avoid here.

The irony of you calling anything else an "echo chamber" when you've essentially created one yourself. Imagine being so butthurt about opposing opinions you feel the need to do this.

@JoshWilding - That’s an incredibly lazy answer. for someone who is basically the face of this site. You do have a responsibility to what you feed the masses, and speaking of those who used to comment here back when I began, rarely comment or no longer do. That’s not a coincidence. If you want to play naive, or choose not to recognize the fact that you get more clicks off the controversial which you seemingly love to produce, hey man, good on you. I’m just a guy who has been coming here forever, and wanted to speak on something I noticed, for a site I really used to love. I can easily go elsewhere for the same news but with less guilt.

@Dobler - I'm grateful that you're a longtime visitor and don't want to see you go anywhere else. However, I wish you'd share some specific examples of what you consider negativity instead of throwing around claims like "you get more clicks off the controversial, which you seemingly love to produce." Aside from reporting news that some fans don't always appreciate—like Supergirl flopping—I don't understand what's "negative" about that, so some actual insights/examples would be immensely helpful if you want to see things change.

I agree that the cancellation of Wonder Man and Daredevil:Born Again is dissapointing since both shows were solid/pretty good imo and it does dampen my excitement to an extent for the MCU moving forward as of now…

However saying those are the only 2 projects that were experiments is odd (I can buy Wonder Man but not DD completely) considering shows like WandaVision , Agatha , She Hulk and even Ironheart were risks imo too so there certainly hasn’t been a lack of those in this saga tbh.

Ultimately the whole “quantity vs quality” complaints imo have gotten to Marvel/Disney hence these cancellations which sucks since it leads to even more characters potentially being sidelined so thanks for that you morons that keep parroting that same shit all the time.

Anyway i just hope the likes of Simon , Trevor & Matt amongst others have a future in the MCU and we see them sooner then later rather then being stuck in limbo like others have been this Multiverse Saga!!.

lol who believed wonder man was actually getting a second season and couldnt tell that was a marketing gimmick?? that's on you.
and while we'll never get an article about how a nielsen ratings report raises questions on how many people actually watch daredevil, the writing for born again has been on the wall for some time.

There is no money in streaming compared to movies in theater.

It's fine, as we will see them on the silver screen.

Fully aligned with Josh here as well, especially on the “After years of criticism over Marvel playing things too safe, it's difficult not to wonder whether that's exactly what's coming next.”

There’s a shot in the recent Doomsday trailer where Doom jumps from a high point, then lands to face Thor. And in midair, his body does some kind of ‘blur’ where he goes out of focus, and the effect is supposed to be like ‘he’s so powerful, his form even changes’ and it’s the dumbest goddamn thing i’ve ever seen.

So who is Marvel writing to right now? Based on their recent moves, they’re playing it wildly safe with half-ass spectacle and predictable stories. I’m expecting secret wars and battleworld to simply be a long episode of the Disney+ What If, which is boring as all hell. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Here’s where I’ll give Gunn credit for at least taking risks. I’m not thrilled with all of them, some make no sense, and I don’t care for Gunn as a person, but risky is still more interesting.

The handling of DD: BA (and Scardapane) is the much more baffling (and concerning decision). And Feige honestly needs to open his mouth and make sense of some of the noise here. Even a "this isn't the last you'll see of any of those characters, we have plans" would be enough. Born Again was Marvel at its finest on D+, and they completely just screwed that up. Just a major shooting yourself in the foot moment; the kind of stuff I'd expect to see from DC/WB rather than Marvel.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/22/2026, 2:45 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - the Scardapene thing is the real issue since why wouldn’t you just have him ride out his run until S3 comes out instead of getting rid of him (even if his contract was up) as they are apparently wrapping up post production which is just an odd and puzzling move…

I really hope we find out more at NYCC in a few weeks tbh since Marvel Television usually has a presence there but it’s likely gonna be Brad Winderbaum who is head of Marvel TV then Feige there.

They really need to quell worries and put minds at ease.

Dude... you had THREE seasons of Daredevil. Three whole seasons. This on top of 3 seasons before that, so six seasons overall. Are we to believe that Daredevil is such a mainstream character, that the viewership by the end of season 3 is still so large and hasn't dipped at all (which is not the norm, save for rare cultural juggernauts like Game of Thrones), that it would warrant continuing? The lore may not even be fertile enough to keep going while keeping quality up, which is why we often see even great shows start to fizzle around season 5.
All things come to an end. Six seasons of Daredevil is pretty great. Let the character have a satisfying arc, then let him rest. Stop whining.

I think MCU Daredevil has been very good at times though just okay at times. He is an integral Marvel character who needs to return.

I thought WM was pretty good but ultimately a nothing burger that wrapped up and needs no more. Implying he should come back because he’s black is just liberal pandering BS.

Black Panther was epic and deserved more. Ironheart was garbage and doesn’t deserve more. Quality should be the determining factor, not skin color pandering.

There is so much potential in this franchise and the Defenders in general. This and the Asgard/Olympus/Eternals characters and story lines have been wasted. Both franchises have a rich story they could tell that could be amazing, but no one seems to have the foresight to realize it.

Honestly, outside of Bullseye getting a costume, the highs in Born Again season 1 or 2 never even hit the lows of the netflix series. It spent too much time on Kingpin and used a pretty tired allegory for him. I watched all of both seasons and just felt very "meh" about it. I'm probably in the minority with that opinion and that's fine. A lot of people seemed to enjoy Born Again. If I remember right, the ratings for each season were lower than She-Hulk, safe to say I was surprised when both Season 2 and 3 were announced, but I'm not that surprised about no Season 4.

@JoshWilding - spot on, although I thought Wonderman was awful. What are the thinking though, they must be on drugs. The storyline of Daredevil on the small screen with all the characters and their backstories is amazing. If their own shows have failed to reach the heights of the earlier Netflix ones that’s entirely on them and not the amazing characters they have been gifted to work with, the actors/actresses who portray them or the fans. They should be really ashamed of themselves.

It's not baffling, these shows are too expensive for the lack of ROI and they're better off just making sure their film output is stronger.

They might dabble in another live action show here and there but I would assume Disney+ Marvel and Star Wars content will be almost entirely animated from here on.
