Paul Bettany Says VISION QUEST Is "About Intergenerational Trauma…Fathers & Sons" - Possible SPOILERS

While speaking at Los Angeles Comic Con, Vision Quest star Paul Bettany shared some potentially spoiler-y hints about what fans can expect from the upcoming WandaVision spin-off...

Paul Bettany is set to reprise his role as the titular Synthezoid in Marvel Television's upcoming Vision Quest Disney+ series, and the actor spoke about the show during an appearance at Los Angeles Comic Con - possibly giving away a little more than he realized in the process.

Though we're not sure if this particular plot point will still be considered a spoiler by many of you, here's your spoiler warning just in case.

"It’s about intergenerational trauma… fathers and sons and denial of pain and denial of your own truth and coming to terms with who and what you are," Bettany teased.

While this almost certainly refers to the returning Ultron (James Spader), who is technically Vision's "father," intergenerational trauma would seem to suggest that Vision's own son will also be involved. This would appear to confirm the fan-theory that Ruaridh Mollica's "Tucker" will ultimately turn out to be the vessel for Tommy Maximoff, aka Speed.

If accurate, we will most likely see Speed and Wiccan (Joe Locke) reunite and join the MCU's team of Young Avengers in the upcoming Champions project (if it ultimately comes together).

Emily Hampshire (Schitt's Creek, 12 Monkeys, The Rig) recently joined the cast as a human version of E.D.I.T.H. (Even Dead, I'm The Hero). This tech was created by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) before being passed on to Peter Parker (Tom Holland) following Iron Man's demise in Avengers: Endgame.

Kerry Condon was rumored to appear as F.R.I.D.A.Y. in human form, but we recently learned that Picard's Orla Brady will actually play the role. James D'Arcy will also be back as Edwin Jarvis in some capacity.

T’nia Miller (Foundation, The Fall of the House of Usher, La Fortuna) is set to play the Bride of Ultron, Jocasta, who is described as "cunning, powerful and driven by revenge." Faran Tahir will also return as Raza, the ruthless leader of the 10 Rings terrorist group who targeted Stark in 2008's Iron Man.

The Vision project has been described as "the third part of a trilogy that started with WandaVision and continues in Agatha All Along." Star Trek: Picard executive producer Terry Matalas is on board as showrunner.

Matalas' work on Picard is said to have "greatly impressed the top brass at the studio. Marvel chief Kevin Feige, an avowed Trekkie, even recently appeared with Matalas on a two-hour episode of the Star Trek podcast Inglorious Treksperts.”

There's been no mention of Elizabeth Olsen's potential involvement, but we do know that the series will take place after the events of WandaVision, "as ghost Vision presumably explores his new purpose in life."

The finale of WandaVision revealed that the Vision we'd been spending time with over the course of the season was actually one of Wanda's constructs, but the real, "White Vision" was rebuilt by S.W.O.R.D. and programmed to track down and kill the Scarlet Witch. This version of the character away to parts unknown towards the end of the episode after declaring himself to be the "true Vision."

In Terry Matalas we trust. It's crazy how a son looks up to their dad. And even if they're the worst person imaginable, they still think that's the right thing to do because Papa does it.

Unpopular opinion: Age of Ultron grows more entertaining with each viewing. I thought it was pretty good but underwhelming when I first saw it, but upon repeat viewings, I love it and find it really fun

@Bucky74 - I've always liked it. Mainly because of James Spader. Adds a lot of weight to the role of something that's just a CGI robot.

"Denial of your own truth and coming to terms with who and what you are". What a knob.

Good. I hope this has some existencial vibe and not just robots shooting pewpew lasers at each other.

@Yellow - You'll be lucky to see any robots. Thats why they are all playing human versions of themselves. Probably should have given this one the movie treatment but I think they said its the last D+ series tying into the movies directly.

@CreateNowSlpL8r - Even better for me, not into the pewpew laser show and a climax with cgi dolls throwing particles at each other.

We already have like 30 movies and 20 shows of that. Existencial crisis and good lines, that's all I need from this show.

@Yellow - honestly, that WandaVision ending with Vision was great already. I expect more of that

Sounds good , it’s certainly interesting ground to cover thematically imo…

This makes me think that even with the inclusion of Paladin ,Raza ,Jocasta and possibly Mary McDonnell’s character that the main antagonist will be Ultron or atleast the core of the show is him , Vision & “Tucker” (if the latter is indeed Tommy).

I could see “Tucker” perhaps be more reluctant to embrace being Tommy and the journey of the season is him coming to terms with his new self as is Visions aswell which could be cool.

I think this was a good year too tbh but I guess I’m in the minority

@TheVisionary25 - I liked 'IRONHEART' more than I thought I would, particularly the second half when it got more supernatural. I really like 'MARVEL ZOMBIES' but I don't think that story needs to continue. 'FANTASTIC FOUR' was fantastic and 'THUNDERBOLTS' was top tier. I didn't really like the Captain America movie we got, but just because I think the story was a mess. If they had gone with the original idea and left RED HULK out of it, I think it would have been better. What else? Oh, I haven't watched 'EYES OF WAKANDA' yet, but it's on my list. It looks good too. I guess 2025 was pretty good. I might be thinking of 2024 when I say we're due a good year.

@JackDeth - I thought BNW was decent but definitely the weakest of the 3 MCU films

I liked Ironheart aswell though I haven’t seen Zombies or Eyes of Wakanda yet.

FF and Thunderbolts were both solid

They asked Bettany, 'What are you most looking forward to in the next phase?' and he said 'A big fat paycheck.' lol

Wouldn’t Ultron be more like Vision’s brother? Tony created both with Banners help with Ultron. Jarvis is just Vision in physical form, right?
JackDeth
JackDeth - 9/28/2025, 2:17 PM
@WruceBayne - Yeah, I don't think any argument could be made that ULTRON is like Vision's father. If anything, Vision is more like ULTRON's father, or at least one of three fathers.

I can’t help but think this is going to be 90% Paul Bettany and James Spader in their human form debating with each other. Very little action or sign of the Vision or Ultron.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 9/28/2025, 4:43 PM
That’s actually a really interesting angle. Lots to unpack there. Vision coming from Ultron. Ultron coming from Tony (and Bruce). Vision coming from Tony. Vision being somewhat of an idealized version of Ultron.

And of course, you have the death (and resurrection) of both.

Some of my favorite Vision moments are his introspective thoughts and philosophical exploration. Sounds like that’s what this show is leaning into.
