Avengers: Doomsday "Right, Cap?" Joke Met With Backlash For Disrespecting Sam Wilson

Scott Lang's (Paul Rudd) dialogue in the new Avengers: Doomsday teaser has led to backlash due to the perception that the joke is "disrespectful" to the new Captain America...

Friday's new Avengers: Doomsday teaser featured a brief scene with Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) addressing Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) as "Cap," before realizing his error after a harsh look from Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).

It's an obvious callback to Ant-Man being a huge Steve Rogers fan (he has always referred to his hero as Cap), but the joke has rubbed quite a few people the wrong way on social media.

Many see this as disrespectful to the current Captain America, and as confirmation that Marvel Studios never fully committed to Wilson as the new Sentinel of Liberty... despite making the decision to pass the mantle to him in the first place.

The extended version of the scene that was released last night, which included new dialogue from Lang and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) chiming in to remind everyone that he was also (briefly) Captain America, is also being viewed as "damage control."

What do you make of this? Are Sam Wilson fans right to be annoyed, or are the complaints a load of nonsense? Let us know in the comments.

Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars were hit with significant delays last year, with Doomsday now set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Secret Wars positioned for December 17, 2027.

Both movies will be directed by the Russo brothers, who also make their MCU return after helming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

"Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday. Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Doomsday will star:

Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Florence Pugh as Yelena, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, James Marsden as Cyclops, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent

Along with Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Letitia Wright as Black Panther, Tenoch Huerta Mejia as Namor, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, and, of course, Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

Cant even bring evans and hemsworth together to shoot that mjolnir scene.

This is a collage in film format. Pasting together separately shot scenes of actors. And it looks pathetic and will compose about 80% of the film if I am to guess

They better not cut this scene to pander to the annoying people terminally online. I don't see that as disrespectful, Antman is a Steve Rogers Cap fan what's the problem?!

I feel the same as Scott Lang, if Brave New World was at least a decent movie I wouldn't say that but it sucked. We had more Steve Rogers movies which were unforgettable (Winter Soldier and Civil War being the tops)...

@SupermanFamFan - this is why comedians can’t do their jobs anymore; people are highly sensitive. Especially when it doesn’t pertain to them.

I truly feel the majority of the time that people who get offended over silly shit like this DESERVE to feel offended. It's obviously a silly joke referencing the previous jokes about Scott calling Steve Cap since Civil War, calling him Cap when talking to Hope, then even Hope later calling him Cap and glancing at Scott now understanding. It was a call back to those, with the added twist that now there are several heroes who have been Captain America.

But of course perpetual victims gotta play their regular victim cards, that's all their parents dealt them so it's all they know how to play.

“Many see this as disrespectful to the current Captain America, and as confirmation that Marvel Studios never fully committed to Wilson as the new Sentinel of Liberty... despite passing the mantle to him in the first place.”

You mean Sam/Cap’s three fans are offended? Disney not only fully committed, they tripled down even when his series and movie failed. It’s the fans who aren’t committed and never will be. Try making anyone but Bruce Batman or fully replacing Peter as Spidey (not just having two Spider Men) and see what happens. Cap is a character not a mantle and Steve Rogers will always be Captain America

People are going to interpret this in the ways that they want to, butI think people are reading too much into this. To me at hearkens back to some tension in the relationship between Scott and Sam ever since he took Sam down at Avengers headquarters in Ant-man. The next big piece of this is how much of a fanboy they showed him to be when it came to Captain America in Civil War

What a bunch of pansies. Get over yourselves. That shield shouldn’t have been passed in the MCU in the first place. Steve Rogers will always be Captain America. You’re fine with taking the mantle off Steve and giving it to Sam, but can’t even take a [frick]ing joke about it? The [frick] outta here.

Also,

“Marvel Studios never fully committed to Wilson as the new Sentinel of Liberty... despite passing the mantle to him in the first place.”

BS. They based a whole Disney+ show around him and gave him his own movie. Sam has had the shield now for almost as long as Steve Rogers held it lol.

@Odekahn - Spot on. Watch them desperately give him the Serum in this of Doomsday and give him forced “moments” thinking this time, THIS TIME we’ll get the fans to like him as Cap. But fans see through that crap like the “Girls get it done” forced team up in Endgame.

Sam Wilson is a terribly written character, extremely bland personality and it doesn’t help that Mackie is not the strongest actor either.

They tried hamfisting and shoehorning racial themes into his story when it wasn’t necessary at all, nor was the audience asking for it.

It’s a great joke that acknowledges public sentiment.

What horseSh!t.

Good actor FalCap just doesn't have the charisma or screen presence to lead this franchise as Captain America.

But the leftist crybabies love to find anything to get butt hurt over and wanna start a white guilt fest because they scream "The black guy got disrespected!!!!"

Idiots.
