VisionQuest: Paul Bettany Breaks Silence On Jac Schaeffer's Exit; Ultron Is "Psychopath Locked In The Attic"

Marvel Television's original plan for VisionQuest called for WandaVision and Agatha All Along mastermind Jac Schaeffer to return to complete her trilogy. Instead, she's moved on to other projects, leaving Star Trek: Picard's Terry Matalas to continue the stories of Vision and Tommy Maximoff.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Paul Bettany put Schaeffer's departure down to "personal reasons" and admitted that parting ways with the WandaVision architect wasn't easy.

"I felt like the rug had been pulled from under my feet," he told the site. "I love her very much, and we made a lovely thing together. I had been waiting and looking forward to having my turn with Jac. And then 24 hours later, I was at a lunch with Terry, because that’s the speed at which Marvel moves."

Matalas' approach was to concentrate on "intergenerational digital trauma," and Bettany says he was sold as soon as the showrunner suggested bringing James Spader back into the fold as Ultron.

"Then the question was, 'Would he do it?' But I was pretty confident that he would because it’s so eccentric and Terry’s so eccentric in the way that he thinks. Once we had James on board, we had a grandfather, a father, and a son."

Describing the Avengers: Age of Ultron villain as "this psychopath that he’s keeping locked away upstairs in the attic," Bettany likened him to "a psychotic psychotherapist."

The actor continued, "There are a couple of things you can do with robots. One of them is, 'I’m a real boy now.' That can be part of it, but the other thing that you can do, that I think would be quite interesting, is Frankenstein. 'Who am I? Who made me? What am I for? What’s my purpose? How do I fit in this world I’ve found myself in?'"

The report also reveals new plot details, including the fact that White Vision has all his predecessor's memories but no emotional attachment to them. He's been living a normal life among humans, but as Bettany puts it, "That all gets blown to hell when a bounty’s put on his head and he is pushed out into the world in a much more visible way."

However, while this may be the end of the story that started in WandaVision, it also creates "a springboard for where Vision might go" and "feels like the beginning of something for a new type of Vision," teases Bettany.

Some new VisionQuest stills have also been released, which you can check out below.

In VisionQuest, Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponise him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron.

His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision's son, reincarnated. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron's influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive.

"this psychopath that he’s keeping locked away upstairs in the attic,"
Is that why James Spader looks like Saddam Hussein when he was hiding in that cave?

@soberchimera - normally I would say that is an interesting observation and theory if I didn't happen to already know that's just how James Spader prefers to look when not actively acting, and I'm assuming a stipulation for him taking this minor role was that he wouldn't have to shave at all.

@TheAmericanHero - Similar perhaps to Pedro Pascal getting to keep his stupid machismo-stache for the Reed Richards role. (Yep, I'm still beating that dead horse...) 🙄

@SuperiorHeckler - I encourage you to keep beating it. A mustache looks stupid on Reed. Go full beard or nothing (and I mean literal beard not the Ryan Reynolds variety). At least this series looks interesting.

Any explanation for why Ultron is there makes Vision kind of a dummy. If it's actually a surviving "piece" of Ultron, that's just insanely irresponsible. If he created and Ultron persona himself, just, why would you do that? If it's a memory, again, why not remove it?

@SATW42 - if I remember correctly , Ultron does try to upload himself into Visions body for AOU but is unable to fully…

I wonder if some of his “consciousness” did go into Vision before they uploaded J.A.R.V.I.S. into it?.

It could be he wasn’t there active before but the reboot into White Vision made Ultron be that again but Vision is keeping him contained since he can’t remove him.

@TheVisionary25 - ok fine, but Vision shouldve been smart enough to see that bit of "code" and remove it,Whether it be OG vision or new white vision, and certainly not keep it around and talk to it, because it would be a major problem if it ever got out, and it's Ultron, he's already escaped his confines before.

@SATW42 - true but I’m sure they’ll give some comic booky reason for him still being there.

Hell , maybe Ultron was keeping that piece of himself hidden for just the right moment which OG Vision never saw.

@SATW42 - In all fairness, fully deleting Ultron would probably be difficult. He can copy and download himself and would have had a fail safe as a super intelligent AI

Looking forward to this purely for James Spader. I wonder if they'll just dump all episodes at once or string it out with the weekly drops.

All the comments sound good imo…

Doing a more psychological story for Vision makes sense and I like seemingly centering it on Ultron , Vision & Tommy as this generational story of “fathers” and “sons”..

I do wonder who put the bounty on Vision in this , could it be Jocasta and if so then how is she alive & why which I assume we’ll get answers to in the show no doubt.

Anyway , the show seems good so looking forward to it!!.

Perhaps it was for the better in the long run with Schaeffer's exit. I felt Agatha missed the mark in a number of ways, being overall fine and having some highlights but also some stuff pulling it down. And WandaVision faltered in the final episode. From what I can tell so far from the footage shown, the VisionQuest we ended up getting is [hopefully] going to be good; we shall see.
