James Gunn Sparks Confusion With Contradictory Comments About Clayface's DCU Future

James Gunn has teased Clayface's DCU future while insisting individual stories don't need to lead to something else. So, is the DC Studios co-CEO contradicting himself, or making a valid point?

Clayface opened in theaters last week, earning largely positive reviews from critics and glowing audience scores. Despite that, the movie opened to only $24 million, falling slightly short of expectations and suggesting the R-rated horror tale has a long way to go before turning a profit.

On Monday, Clayface made $2.2 million, with You Can See Everything nipping at its heels with $2.1 million. It's too soon to say what this means for the DC Studios movie's second weekend in theaters, but Halloween and positive word of mouth could lead to a strong hold.

Clayface explores Matt Hagen's descent into villainy before we met him at his most monstrous in Creature Commandos. While a Clayface sequel can't be discounted, the logical next step for the character is to show up in The Brave and the Bold or perhaps alongside Christopher Smith in Salvation.

Now, though, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has left fans scratching their heads. On Saturday, the filmmaker agreed with someone who said not every project needs to set up another when he wrote on Threads, "[The] DCU is just an alternate universe; we can enter at any location or time and tell that story. I dislike the idea that individual stories aren’t meaningful unless they lead to something else."

"People not understanding this is strange to me, because 'Star Wars' has essentially been doing this for 50 years across movies, shows, games and books, admittedly without the tonal variety."

However, at the Clayface premiere, an excited Gunn declared, "I think one of the most fun things about creating the DCU is being able to tell stories that are very, very different from one another, in very different genres, and yet they all come together at certain points. And yeah, this isn’t the last we’ll see of Clayface. And I can’t wait for you guys to see what we do with him."

There's an apparent contradiction in Gunn's comments, as he's simultaneously encouraging audiences to look ahead to Clayface's future while criticising the expectation that individual stories in a shared world should lead to something else.

Of course, there's a distinction between a character continuing beyond their solo movie and a film existing primarily to set up future projects. Matt Hagen can have a complete, meaningful story in Clayface while still appearing in other DCU projects. Gunn's argument is presumably that the movie shouldn't need to tease a future crossover or advance some overarching narrative to justify its existence.

Still, by promising that Clayface will return, Gunn is adding to speculation about the character's place in the wider DCU, while seemingly criticising those heading into theaters with the expectation that the movie will set up something like The Brave and the Bold.

Whether Gunn's apparent change in attitude is down to lower-than-expected box office takings or because he was trying to build excitement with a big tease before the movie's release is another debate altogether.

Ultimately, Gunn isn't necessarily contradicting himself by planning more for Clayface, but there's an irony in teasing the character's future while pushing back against the interconnected storytelling that has conditioned audiences to look for precisely those clues.

I think maybe you misinterpreted what he meant. I think a lot of fans of the MCU aren’t comic book readers and if a movie doesn’t directly set up the next series of films, it’s trash at least with some of my friends anyway

@narrow290 - i dont understand how this concept is so hard for people to understand. real life, me an you live on the same planet, in the same universe, yet yesterday i never had an interaction with you. why cant this work in comic book films. dont get me wrong i love a good cameo and easter egg comment showing connectivity, but still can still be stand alone.

Look, cut the condescending bullshit already. It's strange to YOU because YOU and select few are the only ones who gets it. Why you think using "Star Wars" as an analogy is BOLD considering that franchise is in the shitter. Are you saying everything BUT Superman is not connected? It just exists to exist? Does that mean Lanterns has no effect on John Stewart when he appears in MoT? Is this SUPERMAN SAGA meant to be the equivalent of THE SKYWALKER SAGA where everything else is expanding it into a "will we? won't we? could it be possible" isms that creative people just love to say but have no concrete plan? I mean explains the lack of any Batman mention in GOTHAM CITY...ya know...the place he resides in? Or does it not matter because THE DCU is just an alternate universe

Kind of stupid to walk out of Marvel with this grand plan that makes absolutely no FUKING sense.

That's like beginning New 52 with a Creature Commando comic that starts the NEW 52, Superman comic, a Peacemaker comic that semi-continues from the previous universe but doesn't, maybe it does, maybe it has, maybe it hasn't, Supergirl comics and CLAYFACE spin off comic but NO BATMAN. NO FLASH. NO AQUAMAN for a whole year. All these heroes are sitting on the bench all because for over 20 years WB has had the most out of touch execs to touch DC Comics.

And sad that the director of the GOTG trilogy, is just as out of touch as the morons before.

@Irregular - my friend, you're missing his point I'd say.

He's saying the DCU is a universe that isn't tied down by sequential story telling, and content can be from different points in the universes timeline. His star was analogy is to explain that Star wars stories take place in different points of history throughout the star was timeline; they tell stories in the future, and in the past.

Everything in the DCU is connected, but isn't stuck telling stories in a linear fashion. If what you like as a fan is linear storytelling, that's fair but personally it doesn't bother me one bit that we're hopping around different places in the timeline, as it's always explained when it takes place in the show or film.

John Stewart's arc in Lanterns will of course effect his character in MoT because it takes place after Lanterns. All of that has happened, even if it isn't addressed in the film. It's like your life as a child happened, but no one you meet as an adult will know what your childhood was like unless you tell them. But you still have had those experiences whether you speak about them or not. John Stewart doesn't need to update everyone on how he got the ring in MoT, we saw that in Lanterns. This is a new chapter of his story, seperate from his origin story and we'll see him take on new plotlines that have to do with that film.

I'll admit it seems strange to not put the Trinity at the front and center of this universe, but as long as they get to them it doesn't ruin things for me. I do my best to just enjoy these films and shows for what they are, rather than what I want them to be. So far so good in my opinion. I haven't seen Clayface, but I've enjoyed everything else so far.

And I say this without being condescending, it all makes sense to me based on what I've seen, and what Gunn says.

@RedFury - I think you're focusing too much on the timeline argument and missing the bigger point I'm making.

I never once said DCU has to tell its stories chronologically. That's not what I'm criticizing. I'm questioning the direction of the universe itself and whether there's a coherent creative vision behind the order in which these projects are being introduced.

Stewart as an example, actually amplifies my point. If Lanterns can establish his character and experiences and MoT just builds on them, then those stories ARE connected and his experiences DO matter. But then what exactly is Gunn pushing back against when he says "individual stories don't need to lead to something else?" Is he talking about avoiding sequel bait and post-credit teases, or is he suggesting that projects don't need to contribute to a larger narrative?

Your childhood analogy also misses what's crucial to growing up. Of course you're an adult so your childhood happened. But if you're telling a story about your adult life, you still have to make deliberate decisions about which experiences matter to that story and how they inform the person you've become. The mere existence of those experiences doesn't automatically make it better. Continuity is not the same thing as meaningful storytelling.

Also like you said it is strange to not include the Trinity at the front and center of this universe. Not saying the Trinity needs to headline every single movie (so far what has Superman/Lex Luthor been doing appearing in Peacemaker and Supergirl btw...to set up MOT!) What I'm questioning why they're establishing this interconnected DC universe while leaving some of it's most foundational characters and relationships in the background. Gotham City, is literally the home of Batman. If we are in GOTHAM, it's reasonable to wonder why Batman isn't part of the conversation. Why there's no Bat-Signal. Is GCPD or Jim Gordon on this case for Clayface? There could be a good explanation but that doesn't mean what people are asking for is unreasonable.

My comparison to New 52 is meant to illustrate how odd and strange it would be to do a MAJOR DC COMICS RELAUNCH (which is exactly what the DCU is) and focusing on Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker, Supergirl and Clayface while leaving out very important characters in the universe like Flash, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and so on and so fourth. You can tell standalone stories with any of these characters, but when you're establishing a new shared universe, the selection and sequence of these stories communicate something about where there priorities are. Genre variety IS NOT THE WAY.

You can enjoy them for what they are and that's completely fair. But that explains why you're satisfied with the approach but it doesn't really address why someone else might question it either.
RedFury
RedFury - 10/27/2026, 5:10 PM
@Irregular - I appreciate when people go against the mold, personally I don't need or want the DCU to follow the same mold as the MCU. It would be boring to get the same thing with a new coat of paint I think. You can't please everyone right? So while you may be on the side of "why?" I am one of the folks it works for, if the shoe were on the other foot you'd be happy and I'd be bored. So what's really fair at all in the end? People are going to be a little miffed no matter what and I guess it's your turn haha Jks.

I don't mean to put words in your mouth, if it came across like that I apologise.

I don't think he means Lanterns is a standalone story in the sense that it doesn't matter to his future stories. And that's why I bring up my childhood analogy. What's happened has happened, and the audience gets to experience this part of John's life as a foundation for where he comes from. But that doesn't matter to anyone but him (and the audience) because that's his story. Everything from that point on builds upon his story without having to retread it. I agree that our childhood makes us who we are, but that part of my story matters to no one else but me. So when we see John again we know what he's been through, but outside of how he acts I don't think it matters if it's never brought up again outside of his own stories because we can just go watch Lanterns again. Now if they completely ignore John's arc, his personality, and his experience in Lanterns, and he acts like a completely different character I think they've have made a big mistake but we'll have to wait and see.

I'm a big fan of continuity, but I feel like it's too soon in the DCU to assume that the continuity will be constantly thrown out the window. I really hope that's not the case as I may become a bit irate as well.

I feel you when you talk about the order of things being released. It is odd to not lead with their most famous characters. But like I said earlier it doesn't ruin things for me as long as they get to them eventually. This universe has really only existed for a few years, during a time where the studio being sold is probably messing with things we're not privy to. So I'm giving them patience and enjoying the content they are releasing for the time being. Is it a weird way to go about it? Yes lol.

i think, actual people who have issues with this stand alone movie and are not just Gunn haters no matter what I can kinda sympathize with. they are clamoring for anything Batman at this point in this universe and i feel the same way. its a travesty how warner discovery, not gunn, warner discovery is handling Batman. marvel is pumping out billion dollar spiderman hits and guest appearances left and right, yet Warner Discovery is giving us delayed out of universe movies and in the mean time shadows and innuendos. you would think they had their hands tied with batman in the sameway disney before fox merger couldnt use xmen or FF. so stupid.

You're reading waaaay too much into what he said. Simply put he said its a universe where you can tell a variety of different stories where they dont "have to lead to something." He's excited because the movie IS being well recieved despite how you may feel and that movies in the DCU can come together at certain points. That doesnt mean Clayface is gonna be a Justice League member. And where did he say this was gonna lead to Brave and The Bold?? This article of "opinion" is such a reach. If you're gonna report the news STOP putting your opinion in it. smh

You're reaching here and im far from a Gunn defender. Movies can exist on their own but the characters can exist in a wider world. I can go see Clayfave 1 and 2 but dont need to see him pop up in Justice Gang or Brave and the Bold. Self contained stories, not characters.

How did you miss that point?
