The Mandalorian Star Gina Carano Teases Cara Dune Return After Meeting With Lucasfilm Execs

Ahead of The Mandalorian and Grogu's release next month, Gina Carano has confirmed that she sat down with Lucasfilm co-President Dave Filoni and filmmaker Jon Favreau after her settlement with Disney.

We first met Gina Carano's Cara Dune in The Mandalorian "Chapter 4: Sanctuary." The Alderaanian served as a shock trooper for the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. When the Empire was defeated, she walked away from the fight (and the New Republic's politics) to become a mercenary.

As a key ally to Din Djarin and Grogu, Dune was later enlisted by Greef Karga on Nevarro, becoming a marshal of the New Republic.

There had been plans for a spin-off TV series led by Carano titled Rangers of the New Republic. However, the character has been absent ever since the former MMA fighter and actress compared being a Republican in the U.S. to being a Jew during the Holocaust. She also faced backlash for social media posts considered anti-trans and anti-vax.

However, after arguing that she was wrongly fired, she settled her lawsuit with Disney last year, marking a rare victory for the actress after her career fell apart (relegating her to direct-to-Digital fare and movies about Hunter Biden, produced by companies like Breitbart News).

At the time, Disney issued a statement saying that it looked forward to "identifying opportunities to work together" following the settlement. Could that include Carano's return to a Galaxy Far, Far Away?

During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani (via SFFGazette.com), Carano was asked whether she believes Hollywood would welcome her back. Admitting she isn't sure, Carano pointed out that "anybody in Hollywood, producers, directors, would come up to me and say 'They did you dirty.'"

Apparently, she's spoken with new Lucasfilm President Dave Filoni and The Mandalorian and Grogu helmer Jon Favreau, though it sounds like the conversation took place last summer.

"I’ve already had a conversation with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau. Really lovely. After we settled the lawsuit, we got on a Zoom call. It was really nice," Carano revealed. "Dave Filoni taking over, CEO of Star Wars. And it’s like we didn’t even miss a beat and Jon Favreau was really funny. Got on the Zoom and he’s like 'So, where did we leave off?' And we hadn’t spoke for a while."

Does this mean Carano will make a surprise appearance in The Mandalorian and Grogu? It's possible, but not necessarily likely. It does, however, seem the door is now open for Cara Dune to make her Star Wars return.

When and where that could happen is a mystery, especially as Lucasfilm now seems to be prioritising big-screen storytelling over streaming titles.

This… could actually save Star Wars. If Filoni can actually bring Carano back, it would buy a LOT of goodwill from a lot of us. Keeping a close eye on this one

@TheVisionary26 - oh yeah, the dream of every fan right there, the return of ‘extraordinary’ talent Gina Carano. Good grief.

@TheVisionary26 - Love Gina and loved her character, but she'd be coming back to a dead franchise at this point.

@RafaelTorres - I'm left-leaning but they [frick]ed her over. Before and after that a lot of actors did worse stuff and they basically ended up being pardoned. Ngl, she's not the best actor in the world, but I liked Cara Dune and I really enjoyed Cara and Grogu's relationship. They seemed to be setting her up as a surrogate mother figure to Grogu. I think the show lost something when she was gone.

@IAmAHoot - @IAmAHoot - Imagine how different it would have been if the show ended after season 2, leaving everyone hyped with Luke's appearance and then they made a movie that had Luke, a trained Grogu, Cara, Ahsoka and Bo-Katan. Maybe even fighting a Thrawn that looked like Elon Musk-y. If that was the case, Mandalorian and Grogu would have been a box office hit and people would be hyped for it.

@DiegoMD - yeap. Too bad they undid that awesome finale a couple months later in that travesty boba fett series.

No thanks. I won’t support something she’s in so I’d just be content with what we’ve gotten so far and leave it alone if they brought her back at all.

This was always one of the better examples of the absurdity of cancel culture hysteria. I don't agree with all of her politics, but I'm really glad that people are starting to act like grown ups again. Hope she comes back.

Also, she a grade-A baddie. This deserves a celebration. I might worship at her alter tonight.

Tbh we shouldn't care a lot about the thoughts of people who make their life pretending to be someone else, anyway 😂

Honestly while I thought Cara Dune was just fine as a character and Carano was alright in the role (better then in some of her other work but still not good/great imo) , I wouldn’t want her to return tbh.

I feel like it would garner more controversy to hire her back and thus renew the discussion when that’s not really needed so why do so & potentially harm your bottom line for a character/actress whose absence hasn’t really been felt much if at all imo huh?.

@TheVisionary25 - I'm not a fan if seeing everybody returning for every film and show for the sake of doing that (like the first few Pirates movies did).
I'm all for them creating newer, interesting characters instead of stretching believability just to make it happen.

She’s good in action roles and attractive to watch. But comparing herself to a Jew in the apocalypse is ridiculous, stupid and ignorant. Maybe she’s poorly educated or bought into the cult. So she doesn’t get a free pass now. She can [frick] off. Where’s the apology?
