X-Men ’97 Season 2 Finale Reportedly Knocks It Out of the Park! Plus, What’s Next For The Show?

Early X-Men '97 finale reviews are in and it’s reportedly a total knockout! Plus, could a major villain like Onslaught be taking over Season 3?

Marvel Studios recently hosted an advance screening for the last two episodes of X-Men '97, and word on the street is that they absolutely nailed it.

If you're keeping up, the penultimate episode is live on Disney+ right now, setting the stage for the big season finale hitting the platform on August 12.

With everything building to a head, where do you think the writers are taking us for the finish line?

Drop your wildest theories below!

The show was previously confirmed for a third and fourth season, but it seems that the production team is looking ahead even further and is already thinking about season 5.

The 10-episode first season concluded on May 15, 2024, but it wasn't until July 1, 2026 that season 2 premiered.  Hopefully, the extended delay can be attributed to  Beau DeMayo's controversy, and season 3 will arrive much more quickly.

In season 2, the show juggles three distinct time periods: ancient Egypt (3000 BCE), the far future (3999 AD), and the present day as En Sabah Nur (Apocalypse) becomes the main foe. Based on hints and clues, it looks as if Onslaught could potentially be the primary villain of season 3.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.

From executive producers Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, Larry Houston, and Beau DeMayo.

The voice cast includes Ross Marquand, Matthew Waterson, Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, and George Buza.

@Malatrova15 - yea, they crammed and rushed through a lot in season one, and I haven’t watched since I started the episode where Wolverine gets his adamantium back. Him working with Lady Deathstrike and Sabertooth was a bit much for me to buy into. Mortal enemies and all.

@Malatrova15 - If X-Men '97 had done Phoenix they'd have done it in one episode instead of taking almost a whole season to adapt it issue by issue like the old show did.

@Malatrova15 - I mean there's a tonne of places to go; we're currently in 2001 in terms of chronology... plenty more Astonishing to dive through, haven't even dug into any of the new X-Men stuff proper, Cassandra Nova, X-treme, Emma, House of M, AvX, schism, cyclops the revolutionary, house of X and Krakoa any of that stuff. Plenty of water left in the well. However, I do think they should have had 3-5 more episodes - they can't pack that many characters into 9 eps; it's just madness.

haven’t seen s2 yet, waiting til its all out,
hows it been u far compared 2 season 1? has the quality dropped?
can u tell when Bo left and the shitty "what if" people took over?

@harryba11zack - Yup.

I had issues with S1 but S2? [frick] a doodle doo. I think it's mostly AI written and even some of the coices sound AI (Xavier for example).

All the right ingredients, but no soul.

@harryba11zack - Beau was the soul of he show.

And now he's selling his ass on social media for his heroin fix. This is the world we live in.

@ObserverIO - Thats speculation he wrote and worked on the bulk S2, so his soul should be very much there, you're just connecting dots.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 8/6/2026, 11:39 AM
@Chasekeane - Oh yeah? Well my soul should be very much there too, but... well it ain't. And I suck at connecting dots. And coloring in books. And sudoku. So... so there! Ha. Now what do you have to say for yourself?

Also you're only speculating on my speculation and the only reason you think he wrote the bulk of the episodes is his co-writer and story by credits. You know what they mean? They mean that he wrote those episodes past tense. And that other people (probably AI robot people with designs on world conquest and turning us all into batteries) rewrote them. You'll notice that I said "I think it's mostly AI written".

When those HKs and T800 endo skeletons come for us, I'll point 'em your way.

I know a lot of people were saying the show would go to crap when they let go of that Brad DeMustard guy, but I've really enjoyed Season 2. I just wish we could get a Spider-Man '98 or something of that sort.

@Ikusa - Excuse me, his name is actually Brad DeKETCHUP. DeMustard is his cousin.

@Irregular - I can honestly never remember the guy's name. I just know it's related to some condiment.

I'm sure Beau knocked it out the park. It's funny how all of his episodes have multiple writers on them unlike season 1.. the best episodes are his and you know it

Cool , looking forward to the finale since i think it’s been a solid season akin to S1 but i do think it’s also shown some of the fundamental flaws/issues with not just X-Men adaptations but streaming in general right now.

The streaming model of 10 episodes at most just isn’t suitable for these half hour or so animated series especially with a cast this big and lore this vast who/which just can’t be properly serviced to varying degrees in that allotted time & space hence why there are other spin off comics like X-Factor & X-Force so stuffing them into one show can hinder the narrative to an extent…

Basically , it’s them trying to do alot in not that much time tbh.

Regardless i have liked this season , especially the Rogue & Gambit stuff as well as that whole mind controlled Nightcrawler completely soloing the X-Men sequence!!.

@TheVisionary25 - True! I haven't disliked anything i've watched, but it sure feels like we needed 5 more episodes peppered in.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 8/6/2026, 11:09 AM
@Chasekeane - same!!.

I appreciate them focusing on different characters and doing side adventures like we got in ep 5-7 but when you only have 9-10 episodes , it can seem like the main plot hasn’t been progressing much until the final 2 episodes.

I wonder what we get after this for Marvel?.

We got VisionQuest and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider Man S2 left for D+ this year and the former already has a date of October 14 so my guess is that so when does the latter…

They haven’t announced to my knowledge if VisionQuest is being released all at once or weekly so if it’s the former then I could see YFNS coming in late November/early December but we’ll see.

Anyway , looking forward to both!!.

@TheVisionary25 - did you watch the latest episode? (If you haven’t yet then stop reading here)

You made here, so I’ll just assume you’ve seen it.
Do you think they’re using Apocalypse to corrupt Prof. X instead of Magneto, in order to get to Onslaught? I ask that because of that whole scene in the astro-plane where they were absorbing each other.

I’m not surprised it’s been fantastic so far. Still hoping we’ll get a Spiderman: The Animated Series revival like this one
