With filming on Miami Vice '85 officially underway, Universal Pictures has shared a pair of posters for the upcoming action thriller, offering a first look at Academy Award winner Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs and Academy Award nominee Austin Butler as Sonny Crockett.
While plot details remain strictly under lock and key, the reboot is expected to explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”
We also have our first batch of set photos, courtesy of Just Jared, previewing a scene featuring Butler alongside castmates Danny Ramirez and Dominic Sessa. The film's villain, Walton Goggins, was also spotted on set later that afternoon, looking extra intimidating. While official character details for most of the supporting cast remain unconfirmed, if the film sticks close to the pilot's plot, Ramirez could be playing Eddie Rivera, while Goggins may be portraying Esteban Calderone, although that's just pure speculation for now.
Jordan and Butler take over the roles originated by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson in the original Miami Vice TV series, which ran from 1984 to 1990. Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell were the most recent actors to play the iconic duo on the big screen in Michael Mann's 2006 film.
In addition to Jordan (Black Panther; Sinners) and Butler (Elvis; Dune: Part Two), the stacked cast features Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story; Oppenheimer), Whitney Peak (Gossip Girl; Hocus Pocus 2), Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones & The Six; Marmalade), Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick; Captain America: Brave New World), John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge!; Encanto), Andrew Schulz (You People; The Upshaws), Edi Gathegi (Twilight; For All Mankind), Walton Goggins (Fallout; The Hateful Eight), André Holland (Moonlight; The Knick), Michael Irby (Mayans M.C.; Barry), and Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers; Tow).
Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick; Oblivion) is directing, working from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler; Roman J. Israel, Esq.) and Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle; Top Gun: Maverick).
Miami Vice '85 hits theaters on May 19, 2028!
