SAGA Writer Brian K. Vaughan Signs On To Pen The GUNDAM Movie For Legendary Pictures
Fans have been hoping to see a live-action take on the Gundam anime series for many years, & it was recently announced that a feature adaptation is in the works at Legendary. Now, the project has a writer.
We found out at at Anime Expo 2018 last summer that Legendary Pictures planned to partner with Sunrise to produce a live-action adaptation of the popular Gundam anime, which is generally credited with popularizing the giant robot genre all the way back in 1979.
There had been no movement on the project since, but now we have word on a writer that should make Gundam fans very happy indeed.
According to THR, Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Saga) has signed on to pen the script. The report doesn't reveal any other details on the project, but for those unfamiliar with this property, the studio's press release contains a handy synopsis which you can check out below.
The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity's growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted. The battles in the story, in which the characters pilot robots known as mobile suits, are wildly popular.
