BOX OFFICE: MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS Crosses $73.1M; Continues Breaking Records

Marvel's The Avengers isn't released in the US until May 4th (although that hasn't stopped it nabbing over 60% of all pre-sold movie tickets online) but more figures from overseas are in and things are looking very, very good for Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble!

More box office figures for Marvel's The Avengers have been revealed by Deadline, and after just three days of release, things are looking even better than expected for the film which combines the heroes from Iron Man/Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger all into one incredible blockbuster. The film has so far been released in 41 territories and box office now stands at a total of $71.3M. This is only 70% of its full foreign run, and the figures from key territories are as follows.

• Australia $11.1M

• UK $9.4M
• France $6.8M
• Italy $5.8M
• Mexico $4.7M
• Korea $4.5M
• Taiwan $3.6M
• Germany $3.4M
• Philippines $3.4M
• Brazil $2.8M
• Hong Kong $1.8M
• Spain $1.7M.

Now, here's a rundown of just a few of the latest records the film has managed to break. Superhero films often do very well in the UK and the past two days has seen Avengers Assemble exceed the box office openings of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. Hong Kong, Malaysia and Iceland had the hightest Friday opening ever, while Taiwan and Mexico had the second, and India and Brazil third. With The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises still on the way, do you think either of those will end up being an even bigger success? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

RELEASE DATE: April 26th, 2012. (UK) May 4th, 2012. (US)

Nice, and I'm pumped the see it in about 5 days at midnight. But how many times are we gonna have this same kind of article? "Avengers continues to break records" This is about the 3rd time we've had this article in the past few days. We've had a box office report almost every day since it's been released.

Unless the reviews on TDKR are brutal it should be able to match it (And I say this as someone who feels TDK is highly overrated, though I was a big fan of BB).

I think ASM really would be a stretch to match that, though.

Honestly, though, this kind of welcome pretty much guarantees that WB will have to immediately put some plans in motion for a Justice League film. "Green Lantern" is a problem, yes (one even more obvious for the fact that "Avengers" will have surpassed it's lifetime box office gross before that film even finishes its domestic opening weekend.) However, there's simply no way the studio can justify sitting on the property with "The Avengers" proving that the super-hero thing isn't played out, and that audiences are jazzed for a team-up.

I'm not saying that a JL film will instantly find the same success (especially if they don't have the kind of build up to it that Marvel put into theirs) but there's just no way they can tell their shareholders that it's not worth a try.

@tea No i know what you mean, I like hearing that a movie I love is doing well. But getting reports almost every day saying it's doing well and breaking records is a bit much. I thinks it's just better to report on the box office intake for the first day, opening weekend, first week, second week, etc..

@Ironnick: Thanks for the tip! Just set my DVR to record. :D

At this rate, it looks like 100 million will be in the bag when the weekend's over. I'd hazard a guess that it'll bank somewhere between 150-200 million in the US opening and 800-900 million+ in it's theatrical run. I'll remain cautiously optimistic but honestly wouldn't be too surprised to see it hit a billion.

@Chewtoy: Agreed. I imagine the suits are looking at these numbers and are fiddling with how to put the property on the front burner. There's no excuse now.

I believe here in Brazil it will make something like US$ 4 million, nothing more - John Carter did the same.

The Avengers is a very good movie, nothing more, nothing less. It will not change the way movies are made and bla, bla, bla.

Actually, the movie is far beyond a masterpiece!!!
beercules
beercules - 4/28/2012, 4:01 PM
You guys are really really underestimating Spidey. The first three were THE biggest superhero movies overseas- far ahead of The Dark Knight and any of the Avengers films. With this one in 3D, I expect that it will be the the biggest superhero movie overseas this year

Forgive me because Im excited beyond words after seeing the Avengers. one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, its in my top 10. Seriously, the only negatives were Loki's motivations were a bit generic (but he was incredible), Hulk should have talked a little bit more and a small few of the scenes dragged on a little but these are 5% negatives with a 95% awesomeness beyond expectations. I felt like a 12 year old kid again watching a Michael Bay-level of badass with relatable and wonderful characters who surprisingly mesh together very well. Joss Whedon and the incredible cast, I love you, I couldnt be more happy

oh and if you havent seen it, go now you are missing out. And you Americans, dont wait around, when it comes out go to the cinema straightaway. It takes A LOT to impress me but my god, the Avengers exceeded my expectations. I need to sit down now...
