THE AVENGERS Set For $67M Friday; New BTS Still Features Joss Whedon And Tom Hiddleston

Following the news that Marvel's The Avengers made an impressive $18.7 million at midnight showings, early Friday estimates promise an equally impressive opening day. PLUS: A new behind the scenes still features director Joss Whedon and a suited up Tom Hiddleston.

Various sources are reporting that Marvel's The Avengers will earn between $65 million and $67 million for today; not a record, but a very impressive start nonetheless. The current worldwide total is being reported by Disney as $322.7 million and analyst predictions currently range from as low as $150 million to as high as $170 million. While this opening is still a long way off from the record set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ($91M) it's still a real achievement for Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble. In related news, AMC Theatres has announced (via Deadline) that they earned almost $4M in total after over 30,000 fans flocked to midnight screenings and paid $40 each to see the "Ultimate Marvel Marathon". They're also reporting sell-out showings today in many of their locations across North America.

That scene with Loki really captures his madness, his need for validation and approval.

Tough to compete with HP because of their established franchise and enormous diehard fanbase, but I believe on its full run, Avengers will give the likes of HP and Avatar a run for their money. The replay value of the movie is just absurd, I haven't wanted to watch a movie so many times since the original Star Wars trilogy.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind Avengers taking the #1 spot at $170M+ this weekend :)

I read this report earlier and didn't put much stock in it seeing as how it came out at 12:45PM. Not a single ticket had been taken yet. Deadline has a habit of reporting things prematurely.

Saw it in IMAX 3D, three rooms were playing at the midnight showing. All sold out. Me and my friends got there 2 & half hours early, and there was already huge lines.

AMAZING film. I hope Marvel gets Joss Whedon to come back and do the sequel.

A $67 Million opening would put it directly in line with The Dark Knight, which also grossed $67 mil its first day. I"d say it'll end up with $160-$165 giving it a solid #2 all-time opening.

If it beats Potter I'll be fairly surprised.

ALL the showings for all 3 cinema complexes within 20 miles of us were sold out first night (3D, 2D and IMAX), and the first weekend you still had to wait for hours if you weren't early enough...They should have shelved every other movie and just showed this one to meet demand, IMHO.

Harry potter quite possibly the most over hyped movie franchise in history....but its looking like the hunger games is going to take the crown.

Saw this movie and loved it. Brilliant fight scene at the end. The best ever in any CBM hands down. I had problems with the beginning and ending though, everything in between is virtually flawless.

I'd give it an 8.5/10. Thors personality sort of is undercut, Pepper Potts is practically useless screen time, the beginning is boring, and the ending seems rushed.

I still call TDK my favorite CBM of all time...but I adored this movie to no end

it'll be hard to top hunger games but the word of mouth for this movie should be great... nobody i've talked to hated it.

Gauging the reactions in real-time on Twitter, the general consensus seems to be slack-jawed awe..lol

Reports of sold-out theaters and extremely long lines in many cities-and the almost-unanimous praise, even from those who don't consider CBM's their "thing"- are VERY encouraging,to say the least.

Numbers wise.if Avengers matches this Friday estimate on both Sat. and Sun.,...Um,that's a $201 million dollar opening weekend!

Not bad for a student film...lol

'The Avengers' debunks 'Harry Potter' and is already the most watched debut week in the country

That's the headline here in BRazil. We're doing our share people, it's time for you to do yours.

Have you watched "The Avengers" today? No? Then get your ass to the closest theater now!

I saw it finally and it was just all right. First the bad things.

Story was really lame, you could predict it and there was no twist. Everyone in the movie is talking about saving the world, but you dont get the feeling that the world is in danger, its only New York. Independence Day brought up that feeling, not this one. Also Loki alone as a villain with a none existant alien army didnt make it up.

The Ending was really lame, it was just too soft. Last time a Marvelmovie had a good ending was Blade 1-3! Even Spirderman 3 ending touched.

Ironman & Hulk saved the movie and of course the action, well afterall it was an action movie.

This movie was on point. Best CBM to date. Seeing it again Saturday and Monday. I worried after seeing the trailers that my boy Thor was gonna just be a punching bag but the dude was a BEAST! Can't freaking wait to see it again.

Spiderman 3 was the weakest of the trilogy, but the ending could touch you, what didnt happen here. The emotional feeling wasnt there. It was just an ordinary ending. Also as a grown-up you expect more and thats the point, where you get disappointed.

Also, if my opinion disturbs you, then you're nothing more than a fanboy (I dont know, if you are one). If you like something, then dont expect that everyone else will like it too. Everyone has a different taste, so my opinion shouldnt mean anything to you, I just shared my thoughts and thats it.

Quick question (which may not be answered the next time I see it)....

There were two moments during the movie where the audience (myself included) were laughing SO loud and hard that I just couldn't hear the punchline to these scenes.

SPOILERS...
What does Tony say to Loki when the spear is blocked by his chest piece?
What does Hulk say (does he say anything? I did see his mouth moving...) after he turned Loki into a rag-doll?

@Tajin- Thats why I said EXPLAIN. And Spider-Man 3 is regarded world wide as one big pile of shit. Your entitled to your opinion, I just wanted a little more reasoning why the ending was so bad. Because the ending is whats being praised the most. I do disagree with your opinion, but I'm entitled to disagree as well. The comment that threw me off the most was Spider-Man 3.

Puny God--best line ever and yes best cbm made to date and to compare it to the inferior X-Men leather jumpsuit movies is ridiculous. People always rate X2 so high...why? the opening scene with Nightcrawler...WOW one scene out of a 2hr movie.

Well I dont care about what the world is saying about spiderman 3. Of course it was weaker than the previous two, but it wasnt shit. The two failures were throwing the Venom in, just in the last minute and making Sandman the reason for parkers uncles dead. When Sandman would have had the extra screentime, what got the Venom, than it would have been a better movie. Unlike others, I dont give a shit, what others think about a movie.
