BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Looks Set For A $60 Million Weekend

According to Variety, early returns have indicated that The Dark Knight Rises is set to earn between $18 million and $20 million on Friday, putting it on course for a weekend total of $60 million. That's roughly a 60% week-over-week drop. When compared to the 52% drop that The Dark Knight had in 2008 and Marvel's The Avengers 50% drop earlier this year, this may seem pretty steep, but it is holding well according to several studio execs. Why the drop then? Well, the audience that the threequel appeals to may play the biggest role in that. "It's a lot darker and male-driven, when you look at the trailers," the site was told by one analyst, while the Olympics are also likely to dent its box office impact. Another factor is the tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado, last week which left 12 dead, with a recent poll revealing that 25% of moviegoers are still reluctant to visit the theatre. The Dark Knight Rises has so far grossed over $224 million domestically and $375 million worldwide.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

STARRING:

Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman
Michael Caine as Alfred
Gary Oldman as Commissioner Jim Gordon
Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox
Tom Hardy as Bane

Thought this to be expected. I have seen it twice and loved it, but always thought the dark tone, which is what Batman is meant to be, and length would put others off watching it twice.

Also not as kid friendly so families will be reluctant especially after the shooting.

This movie deserves to make more than this. I enjoyed this movie more than the Avengers and that is saying something because I loved the Avengers. This movie just seemed to have more heart and better character development.

Oh it'll still make a lot of money. Sadly the shootings and the fact parents were put off because the last one wasn't so kid friendly will cost it.

However that said I don't want it to be kid friendly which maybe selfish to say

It won't do the same amount as TDK did, but given the circumstances of the release and the fact that it's already made back more than its budget it's a no-brainer that it's still a huge success.
dahamma
dahamma - 7/27/2012, 6:41 PM
Yeah it is a success but I gotta admit its shocking that it wont out gross TDK. I mean that movie was HUGGEEEEE how could a sequel to that not reach a billion?
Curmudgeon

Its following the last Harry Potter's trajectory very closely.

It'll probably top that (381 domestic), but at this rate I don't think it come close to topping Dark Knight.

With all what surrounding this movie and the outrage of some people saying it to violent i surprised now it made this much. I happy it did this to be honest. I was thinking lower than this.

So bring on the trolls now.

This kinda Batman movie Nolan made to tie up his trilogy, NOT to compete with The Avengers, I realized.

I should of known since he said many times thats what he intended to do, and kinda worried me, to be honest.

With TDK he had more freedom to make it more unique.
I believe if he didnt want to end it as a trilogy, he would of done a better film.
He kinda tied his own hands to the possibilities of building uppon TDK even further.

Oh well, STILL a great film for what it is.

It still looks to hit a billion.
Doing real good.

@ brewtownpsych

you say its irrelevant but don't you want to see comic book movies make money,i know this is the last nolan bat-film so it probably is irrelevant in this case.

take the incredible hulk,i liked that movie but it only grossed $263,427,551 so marvel wasn't intrested in making a sequel,he turns up in the avengers everyone loves the hulk again.

if captain america & thor didn't make money, they wouldn't of greenlit sequels.

it benefits everyone if comic book movies make money, take the avengers $1.5 billion at the box office now warner/dc seem to be moving forward with a justice league movie.

can't really expect it to do better, after all avengers was a family movie that I was happy to take my kids to see, Batman is just to dark for kids, gonna lose alot of money when you make a movie that kids should not see. does not make it a bad movie in any way, just one that by design excludes a large chunk of the population

As lots of factors are being stated!

The lack of (or almost absence of) TV ADDS is the Biggest NOW!!
& loss that TDKR will have to bear cuz of that is HUGE!

Plus this DARK... I mean it's really really Dark film, & so it even making 500 Million is an achievement...& It's doing just cuz of audiences trust on Nolan that would deliver a great Film & also audiences love for this trilogy!

People are loving it; i mean getting an A at cinemascore for THIS MUCH DARK film says something!

It's really easy to LOVE AVENGERS!
But NOT so much to LOVE TDKR!

BUT that doesn't mean it's not great; it's phenomenal!
I LOVED THE SHIT OUT OF TDKR!
It's my favourite Film of the year; Favourite of Trilogy!
The Bold & Daring route Nolan took for this film needs to be appreciated more, whether u like the film or not!

I just hope it gets over 1 Billion worldwide!
It will; but I would really be devastated if it didn't!
The great Trilogy deserves to be a Global sucess!!

Yes Vegakingblade

Still...Whats amazing is that a film about one iconic hero WO any physical superpowers can even rival The Avengers! Agreed?
Both great cinematic worlds, stop the hate.
