Clayface Spoilers Leak: Is Batman In The Movie And Does It Connect To The DCU?

Early Clayface screenings have reportedly revealed some surprising details about the DCU horror movie. Should you be on the lookout for Batman, Easter Eggs, or connections to the wider universe?

To build hype for the next DCU movie, early Clayface screenings are currently taking place in select theaters around the world. Inevitably, spoilers have begun leaking online, answering some huge questions about the DC Studios R-rated horror movie in the process.

Much has been said about Clayface being released before The Brave and the Bold. The animated Creature Commandos confirmed Batman is active in Gotham City, but as far as we're aware, the role still hasn't been cast.

Clayface seems a perfect opportunity to start introducing Batman lore in the DCU, but here's the kicker: not only does Batman never appear in Clayface, but he's also not referenced. That makes it a lot like Sony Pictures' villain-led movies, which also stopped short of ever mentioning Spider-Man.

This leak has also confirmed that the rumours about Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul making an appearance in Clayface are false, so no, he's not the DCU's Dark Knight.

In fact, it's said that there are zero references to the wider DCU, no mention of any other Batman villains, and not even a vague tie-in to Creature Commandos, which featured the villain's DCU debut. The Gotham City gangster who scars Matt Hagen is a newly created character, so in terms of Easter Eggs, they're largely nonexistent.

In fact, Clayface sounds like a fully standalone DC movie akin to Joker, and this leaker "got no sense of Batman or even Bruce Wayne's presence."

While many fans will be relieved that the Justice Gang doesn't show up on the hunt for Matt, others may argue that not taking this chance to flesh out the DCU's Gotham was a missed trick. Now, it's down to next summer's Man of Tomorrow to potentially add Batman to the mix.

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the cult-favourite villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also getting a "Story by" credit. Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Chantal Nong Vo, Lars P. Winther, Rafi Crohn and Paul Ritchie executive producing.

Watkins' creative team includes director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer James Price, editor Jon Harris and costume designer Keith Madden. Volker Bertelmann (Conclave) is the movie's composer.

Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23.

@JoshWilding - yup.

This could have been a Mike Flanagan joint in the batverse. But they replaced him as director and rewrote his script. (Flanagan I mean, not Matt Reeves 👀)

@ObserverIO - Yeah, they did Flanagan dirty on this one. I really don't understand why they've even made this film when it adds nothing to the wider DCU.

@ObserverIO - More like Flanagan left because of scheduling conflicts. It was either this or the new Exorcist movie.

@JoshWilding - I guess they needed another movie for 2026 and this was the closest to being ready. Except Mike wasn't ready, so instead of waiting a year for him they rushed it into production to hit a release date.

Which is something they said they would never do. Didn't take them long to go back on that promise.

@ObserverIO - Yeah, they just wanted to rush this and Sgt. Rock out ASAP. They fumbled the latter, and who knows with this one...I'm hoping to see it on Monday night at Odeon's Scream Unseen, which means I won't be under embargo and will be posting a review that evening, whether WB likes it or not.

@JoshWilding - I'll look forward to your reaction. Most of the ones I've seen online also praised supergirl and I find it fishy how deadline and THR kind of omit that most of the reactions out are from hand picked podcasters.

@NotMyDiagnosis - I posted my buds thoughts last week he was in the group that saw the movie. He said(note he is a huge DC fan) the movie is fine but has flaws. You'd have zero idea Batman is connected to this if it didn't take place in Gotham.

His thoughts were he'd be shocked if the movie does anything at the box.Paying to see a movie with no Batman ...script is okay....and zero hype behind the DCU just hard to see many doing that(paying to see it).

@NotMyDiagnosis - What blew my mind was THR posting a reaction from some girl with 83 followers who had quite clearly faked it - she was just some fan. Took me 2 minutes to see that from her profile. I’m eager to see it, but my gut tells me mediocre horror movie and a bad CBM in the sense it has nothing to do with the comics.

@jst5 - ahh i must have missed this the first time you posted it, thanks! For me, i'm OK with loosely connected elseworld stories as long as they're actually good. I have a feeling this film might be ok i just wonder if its actually worth paying to see.

Too much responsibility has been given to Gunn, and things are falling apart.

His DCFU demise is both sad and inevitable.

Snyder had the pseudo intellectual , pseudo profound garbage dc verse. Gunn has the inscrutable and cringe dc verse. Both disasters

"While many fans will be relieved that the Justice Gang doesn't show up on the hunt for Matt"--anyone thinking that hasn't been following the barest trace of information about this movie. I doubt 80% of people who have heard of it/seen trailers even know it is meant to be in the same universe. It's a weird small-time cash grab, looking for gravy from a shared universe that doesn't even have a main dish yet, and it won't do the brand any good even if it is moderately successful (if it can do better than The Substance they should be fine on that score for theater performance).

I agree with the basic response to the "who asked for Clayface?" question that Gunn posted, but it's missing the context of "who asked for Clayface in a DC universe without a Batman?" Like, Pengiun was far better than The Batman but at least they had the decency to introduce him first.

It will be interesting if this will be a solid horror movie and if it does well a week before Halloween.

It won't be a good DC movie, that's for sure.

Could go both ways.

Horror fans won’t check it out because it’s a dc movie, comic book fans won’t check it out because it’s a horror movie with no connection to the DCU …
