The Batman Part II: Jeffrey Wright Teases Gritty, Sidney Lumet-esque Vibes

With filming on The Batman Part II underway, actor Jeffrey Wright, who will be returning as Jim Gordon, is offering up some insight into the tone for the highly anticipated sequel while also praising director Matt Reeves.

According to Wright, fans shouldn't expect a typical, paint-by-numbers superhero flick as Reeves is aiming for something closer to the gritty crime dramas of the character-driven '70s classics.

On The Batman Part 2 and Reeves, Wright commented, "I think [director] Matt Reeves’ interpretation of the franchise is really fresh, and rich in terms of the narrative, but also rich cinematically. I don’t think he views this as frivolous comic book stuff, but he views it as an opportunity to explore contemporary themes through a really dynamic medium that is the Batman franchise. He’s also a massive fan of the franchise, hugely enthusiastic about it, and it’s deeply meaningful for him."

He went on to add, "These films, the first one and now working on this one, are films from an era that he and I, because we’re of a certain age, just revere, and those are films of the American cinema of the ’70s – Sidney Lumet films and films that Dustin Hoffman would have been a part of, [Francis Ford] Coppola and [Martin] Scorsese. He’s trying to use all of those as touchstones in these films that might, in other hands, not have anything to do, cinematically, with that type of filmmaking."

Production on The Batman: Part II is officially underway, with director Matt Reeves taking to social media to confirm that principal photography began in London on June 12, 2026.

The sequel serves as the next chapter in Reeves's Batman Epic Crime Saga, which includes the 2022 film and the heavily lauded HBO Max spin-off series The Penguin. The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.

Returning cast members include Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin.

The highly anticipated sequel has enlisted newcomers Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch. The sequel is expected to feature Two-Face, but the internet is currently split as to whether Stan or Tyree Henry is portraying the character.

For his part, director Matt Reeves is keeping his cards close to his chest as he's confirmed that these actors are on board, but has opted to keep their exact roles entirely under wraps.

The sequel will reportedly pick up right where the first film ended, with a now flooded Gotham City. The follow-up will also see Bruce Wayne grappling with the concept of whether he can do more good for Gotham as Bruce Wayne or Batman.

Let me be FIRST to say the first one was overlong, overdark, self important tedious MID AF 'content'

@Batmangina - I can’t tell if you’re championing Nolan or Schumacher here.

@Batmangina - It was worse than mid. A self serious parody riddled with plot holes, a Batman that does nothing, multiple characters in name only, and an awful third act. I have no idea why it's so liked. It's on par with Gunn's Superman.

@Lisa89 - I actually think the perfect alchemy would be one part Burton, one part Nolan one part Schumacher (for the color palette) and Batfleck as the center piece without all the goddamn Snyder Grit bullshit.

Feel free to attack me vigorously...

@J0RELLC00LJ - Val Kilmer was underrated AF IMO - but lose the nipples. Unless it's Batgirl.

I liked the first film. It was a very SEVENesque style detective movie. I hope they continue the darker detective noir style with the sequel.
Reeve’s I trust with Batman, with Gunn I expect another GOTG dynamic between the Bat family while resembling the Adam West Batman goofiness. If Batman’s dog doesn’t save the day in Gunn’s Batman movie I’ll be disappointed.

To be frank, I don't care anymore. I just don't. Reeves delivered an awful first film, quite frankly one of the most overrated movies of all time, and he's taken 5 years to give us a sequel that might just be as equally awful. The Penguin is the only good thing from this universe and it won't be getting a season 2. I do not care for a "grounded" Poison Ivy.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - Redundant and overlong? Maybe. Awful? Absolutely not, The Batman was better than any of Snyder’s films and most of post-Endgame MCU.

Zsasz and Poison Ivy actually sounds more interesting than Mr. and Mrs. Dent. Zsasz actually comes from a wealthy family like Bruce and lost his parents, so making him a dark mirror to Bruce is intriguing.

@soberchimera - The Batman isn't better than ANY Snyder film and being better than post-Endgame MCU isn't an accomplishment. In the grand scheme of things, The Batman is a truly awful movie. I went into the film completely blind (Didn't check out any ratings or word of mouth) and I couldn't believe what I watched. I've rewatched the movie 2 times since then, once with my family and the other time on my own, and each time the film has actually gotten worse for me. It's filled to the brim with countless plot holes, Batman having no agency and being straight up useless, the obvious ripoffs of better films like Seven and Zodiac, and the supporting cast orbiting onto Batman without ever changing him or vice versa. Gordon is an exposition dump machine and nothing more, Riddler's plot is underdeveloped, shaky, makes no sense, and his motivations are underexplored. The film acts like it has something to say but never does and it's the most surface level stuff imaginable. The Batman is a typical, generic MCU film cosplaying as something more and that's my problem. It's a soulless, hollow, corporate husk of a film that rips off better films and does everything worse. Don't even get me started on that AWFUL, repetitive score. At least Man of Steel and BVS commit to its thesis about power and Godhood. The Batman asserts its themes through shitty exposition and voiceovers without really saying anything.

It looks great and the performances are great (NOT Pattinsons), but it's an incredibly overrated movie and fits right in with the modern MCU/DCU garbage we've been getting.

I mean , Wright isn’t wrong…

The first Batman definitely had the feel of a 70’s gritty crime drama that tackled corruption & other systemic issues which Lumet , Scorsese & Coppola were/are known for so it’s cool to see Reeves seemingly continuing that with Part 2.

Anyway , I liked the first film quite a bit so can’t wait for the sequel!!.

Is it so hard to see Batman TAS as a template and run with that? It’s by far the best iteration of the character and there’s a lot of grounded mixed with fantastical in there.

But so far I think Nolan has done the best job with the first two of his trilogy. It could have gone wild in the third, but he refused to let it.

@JustAWaffle - In terms of good films I'd give joint 1st place to both Burton movis and the first two Nolan movies. The Batman and Batman Forever would share second place.

But in terms of the world of Gotham being represented on screen I think Reeves' Gotham is leagues ahead of both Nolan and Burton.

@ObserverIO - I should have said something about Reeves’ version. I totally agree. He set up a stage to make Gotham a character of the story.

I just know JoshWilding is fuming you beat him to the punch with some actual news.

Don't worry, in a few short hours we'll certainly have some slop titled "10 reasons to be nervous about The Batman Part 2", and item one on the list will probably be "Matt Reeves has gone WOKE"/"Brian Tyree Henry might race swap this beloved character"

Don't know about you folks, but I intentionally avoid clicking on Josh's articles. I'll see his "headlines" and find the source elsewhere. He's not getting my engagement.

Meh. Kinda over it at this point, the momentum they had going for them with how Penguin ended was already over. It's just taking so long at this rate. I'm more excited to see what Gunn does with Batman.
