UPDATE: The Batman 2: It Seems Sebastian Stan Has NOT Revealed Which Character He'll Play After All

We have another update on yesterday's report that Sebastian Stan revealed which character he will play in The Batman - Part II. Apparently, he didn't!

UPDATE: The plot thickens!

It seems the French journalist who interviewed Stan for the article in question, Stéphanie Belpêche, responded to a post on X, claiming that the actor did, in fact, confirm he was playing Harvey Dent while speaking to her at Cannes.

Belpêche soon deleted the post, likely at the studio's request.

Original story follows.

We figured there might be something up with this interview, and Warner Bros. (via The Wrap) is now claiming that Sebastian Stan did not reveal which character he's been cast as in Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel after all.

While speaking with French publication Le Journal du Dimanche, Stan (supposedly) mentioned that he will take on the role of Harvey Dent in The Batman - Part II when asked if he could share anything about shooting Avengers: Doomsday.

"Honestly, I have absolutely no idea. Because we didn't have a script. We were just shooting scattered scenes. It's a different way of working, continuous, constantly evolving. The producers didn't want us to read it in its entirety, to avoid journalists asking us questions. (Laughs.) I've been following this rule for fifteen years, I'm used to it.

I also can't say anything about The Batman: Part II , by Matt Reeves, where I play Harvey Dent [in theaters February 16, 2028, editor's note] . The beauty of this profession also lies in participating in projects of this scale, which I love as a viewer. Right now, I'm really looking forward to seeing The Odyssey , by Christopher Nolan; it looks amazing."

This was a direct quote attributed to Stan in the article, but it did seem a little odd that the actor would mention that he couldn't say anything about the movie... and then reveal which character he's playing in the same breath.

According to The Wrap, "two insiders [tell us that] Stan was misquoted and the French publication has since updated their misprint in the online article."

This doesn't mean that Stan isn't playing Dent/Two-Face (the studio is simply denying that he confirmed it), but given this latest update, we're definitely leaning towards the recent rumor that the Thunderbolts* star is actually playing twisted series killer Victor Zsasz.

Earlier this year, Reeves officially announced the movie's main cast on social media.

The filmmaker confirmed that Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), Colin Farrell (Oz Cobb/The Penguin), Jayme Lawson (Bella Réal) and Gil Perez-Abraham (Officer Martinez) will reprise their roles, alongside new cast members Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch and Brian Tyree Henry.

Reeves did not reveal the characters Gotham City's new additions will play.

After several previous delays, The Batman - Part II was scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 1, 2027, but was recently pushed back to February 18, 2028.

@FrankenDad - He's clearly playing a version of Dent...now does that mean this Dent turns into Two Face is the question?

Id say it's a villain that hadn't been mentioned. Remember Tom Hardy in TDKR...every villain was mentioned apart from Bane.

Well, Matt Reeves, is fundamentally wanting The Batman film franchise he is making to be a deconstruction of Batman. His mindset stems from the 'frick Batman' mentality of the last decade where they want to belittle Batman under the notion that he should be doing more as Bruce - which demonstrates their lack of understanding of the source material.

His previous entry focused around the notion that Bruce's family is a bunch of criminals, destroying the legacy of the Wayne Family, so I'd expect this next entry to shift that closer to home with Bruce directly being called out for his past actions.

The most likely option is that the villain will be someone from Bruce's childhood of which it is almost certainly going to be Hush.

Hush/Tommy in the comics is a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne who went insane and tried to kill his own parents to quickly inherit their fortune, but his plan was thwarted by Thomas Wayne.

---

I would imagine given how Matt Reeves wants to deconstruct Bruce that they'd have Hush/Tommy as a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne who uncovers the nature of Thomas Wayne and attempts to tell Bruce the truth about his father.

Bruce would learns that Tommy has been spying on his father and refuses to believe him, severing the friendship. Bruce would speak to his father which would result in Thomas Wayne then organizing the killing of Tommy's parents, who for thematic reasons would be shot in an alley leaving only Tommy.

Then you have Batman/Bruce and Hush/Tommy who both lost their parents due to a criminal shooting them in an alleyway. Bruce would now realize the extent of his fathers nature while having to confront a victim of his fathers legacy.

@emeraldtaurus - Hmmm...no Christopher Nolan and WB were pretty open about that. I do remember it being announced that Bane & Catwoman would be the antagonists in the movie but it was for sure not a leak.

Why would they need to keep Viktor a huge secret though? It's not like he's some top tier Batman villain that everyone isgoing to go crazy over if it's announced. I just don't get it. Two Face would be the bigger surprise imo.

@ThorArms - Also Stan said months ago that his character in the movie is a multiple character with different sides to him that he has to play. That's not Zsasz at all.

Two Face isn't much of a surprise and would be what people expect the moment anyone remotely like a political figure or having a name similar to Harvey Dent appears.

I think it's a lot more likely he's going to be playing Hush. A childhood friend of Bruce, likely someone who realized the nature of the Wayne family and tried to warn Bruce, only for Thomas Wayne to take revenge and organize a hit on Hush's family.

I can already picture a young Hush/Tommy witnessing Thomas Wayne wearing the Court of Owls mask at a secret meeting at Wayne Manor involving the crime syndicates, desperately pleading with Bruce to believe him, having Bruce push him away banishing him from the manor and then having a criminal sent by the Court of Owls proceed to take out Tommy's parents with him screaming in despair and rage in an alley as the snow falls.

He said the character has multiple sides with different roles he has to play. I think Two-Face would be a letdown because by definition he only has two sides to his character.

Personally I'd lean more to Hush whose varying sides/roles would be a result of a traumatic past which we'd see on-screen present itself in different ways. Acting as an inverse to Batman. We'd see him pretending to be like Bruce Wayne, we'd see his trauma manifest, we'd see his cold ruthlessness, we'd see the frightened child, etc...

Riddler was inspired by the Zodiac Killer and leans on medias perception of online cults, but the film makes a note of reverting him to a whiny child because the goal is that these villains are not something you admire, but something to be looked down upon.

Hush could be inspired by the cases of victims being isolated and forced to pretend to be fine in a society that has failed them. An embodiment of the victims caused by high society like the Wayne Family.

@Scarilian - Depends on how you look at Dent and the roles. You could have Dent the husband....Dent the son....Dent the DA....and course Two Face which would have two sides.

@jst5 -
I feel it'd be easier just to have Hush and have Hush fill the role of having a political facade where he ends up getting his face damaged, resulting in his bandaged appearance.

If you are wanting to deconstruct Batman I doubt you'd pick Harvey because he just doesn't have a connection to pre-adult Bruce. You'd just get a version of The Dark Knight again.

jst5 - 8/19/2026, 4:53 PM
@Scarilian - You could say that's similar to doing what you just did in the last movie with the Riddler.

No fuking journalist is going to do an interview without recording said interview. How the FUK is the journalist going to remember this entire interview word for word, type this all down word for word, send it to their editor WITHOUT PROOF OF SAID CONVO!? What? A PIC?

Notice how it's taking so long for James Gunn to deny that Sebastian Stan is Harvey Dent? Because till this day, he has STILL not denied those "rumors"

HE IS Harvey Dent, THR broke the story when it first announced Sebastian Stan was joining and Sebastian Stan assumed it was already revealed, only for him to get in trouble because WB would rather THEY announce it, rather than a French publication who got lucky with breaking news.

This silly "controversy" is not helping this film. I don't think this is what WB people want potential viewers talking about... Honestly, I think it's Dent and that's all.

Makes sense since it seemed odd that he would say that he couldn’t say anything in that interview but then go ahead and reveal his character in the film…

Anyway the confusion about whether Stan is playing Harvey Dent or Victor Zsasz is because he’s playing both in Harvey Zsasz or Victor Dent…;).

Kidding aside , I still think it’s more likely he’s playing Victor Zsasz who instead of The Talons is the Court of Owls primary enforcer in this film!!.
