UPDATE: BOX OFFICE: $17M Friday For THE DARK KNIGHT RISES; Now On Pace For $55M Weekend

The numbers just won't go up... While it was previously reported that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises is set for a $60 million in its second weekend, that is probably not happening due to a huge 78% drop from the film's opening last week...

According to official estimates, The Dark Knight Rises is now headed for $55 million in its second weekend. The Friday number was lower than expected, and instead of $20 million, it made around $17 million. This means the film had a big 78% drop from the opening last week, which is definitely not good. The overall weekend in US is down -30% from last year, and we'll see what happens.

The film is now on $400M+ at the worldwide box office, and it remains to be seen whether the international market will be huge, as many are predicting. Stay tuned for more box office updates.

UPDATE: Thanks to BoxOffice.com, we have the official Friday number:

Starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard and Morgan Freeman, The Dark Knight Rises is now in theatres.

I think the film hurt itself. It's really just not that good. I don't like the changes from the comics and the film is a little slow. The overall premise is a little silly, frankly.

Not a bad film, but not great.

[frick] the shooting i saw it yesterday, i enjoyed parts but my ass got dead and i got bored of a lot im not telling my friends to go see it its the best film ever im telling them its called the dark knight rises but batman only gets about 18mins screen time through the entire nearly 3 hour flick.

The victims of the shooting were proper Batman fans, they wouldn't want this film to suffer because of them.

People need to go see this movie. Its amazing.

Well, I imagine that'll cost'em about $5,000,000, huh?

I really did like this film, tried to at lest. Yes a VERY good movie for people who dont know the comics, but the changes up-set me and that [frick]ing twist as Bane being a body-guard, nothing more to Talia aka Miranda is stupid. It left you wondering "WHAT, WHAT THE [frick]" With Batman dying, legend living on. That was good, but Alfred seeing Bruce in Florence was weird. Is he real or a figment of his iamgiantion? Inception-ized ending.

Anyway, my heart couldn't take it anymore when JGL stepped into the cave. Robin bitches.

My ratings to CBM's this year:

TASM: 9.5/10
AVENGERS: 9/10
TDKR: 8.5/10

Yeah I agree. The movie was not really engaging imo. It's good, better than your average blockbuster, but the weakest of the trilogy. Lot of things don't work. Not a GREAT film overall. But still good.
AmazingFantasy
AmazingFantasy - 7/28/2012, 5:25 AM
It was a figment of Alfred's imagination when he saw Bruce at the end. This is what Alfred WANTED to see...I do not think it was literal. Selina Kyle being with Bruce was the audiences' interpretation of Alfred's dream.

silly thread, if its already done 400 mil in barely a week and the difference between previous forecast and later forecast is only 5mil why such a negative spin on the thread? sometimes I wonder.

It won't make a billion dollars at this pace unless they get fantastic foreign returns.

Wether to believe it was a figment or literal is up to the individual, I don't thimk either is set in stone.
Of course if there ends up being a fourth film we know it was literal.

The movie was amazing, best movie of the year, saw it for the third time last night, and its one of those movies that gets better the more you see it , and gddeadpool, there's no telling ,whether or not Alfred was seeing things, which I think it was real, but Bruce lives, they even said he fixed the auto pilot in the flight manifest sooo...

It cause this site thrives on Box Office and the war it starts between Marvel and DC fans. Give it second Intruder and he minions will comment. Give their bullshit exsamples cause they know how hollywood works and the how box office works.

Look it clear this movie is going to keep trailing and it got hurt by the shooting. But haters will put their spin on it. You know Nolaites yadda yadda yadda and butthurt and yadda yadda yadda. Their also going to say it cause the movie was not that good as the others so that why it slipping. Well that their opinion. And that what it is. Their views on it.

I'm a Marvel guy, grew up reading Marvel and The Avengers was a dream come true, seeing all those charcters I loved growing up on the big screen was wild!! But while I enjoyed The Avengers more I think that TDKR was a better film...does that make sense?

Rises was the weakest of the trilogy..seems like that's the ultimate trend in the movies I enjoy. 2nd film was best,1st film second best,3rd film comes in third.

Star Wars trilogy it was: 2nd film / Empire was best,1st film / Star Wars next best,3rd film / Return was last place.

Original Spider-Man trilogy was the same: 2nd was best, followed by 1st,3rd was weak.

Hopefully Avengers breaks this trend for me since I think it was easily the best superhero movie this year.
Need the sequals to be consistently better but that's apparently very difficult to achieve.

Also with the lack of promotion it getting now with no TV spots and Warner Brothers I think are just wanting to ride this film off cause of the horrific act it tied to. I think it sucks.

Also this site is run by Marvel fans. You can tell. I be going on here for like 2 mouths and i can clearly see that. Only reason i come on here cause of all the news they have and it really the only comicbook movie news site that has news everyday.

I'm a Marvel fan and I thought it was great, but not quite as good as TDKR, I wouldn't go and see it again at the cinema, just wait for the blu-ray. I think its length hurts it for rewatches tbh. Nearly 3 hours is a long time, even for a film you love.

It's a shame though, I knew without 3D tickets it couldn't beat Avengers but I hoped it would exceed TDK's gross.

"This site is run by Marvel fans"?

Marvel fans are still young. This site is full of aging geriatric DC fans, think again.

Anyhow, looking forward to see TDKR again once at the theatre.

It still possible it can. Might take longer to get their but it might still can. I think the foreign market will be that deciding factor on that. That how Transformers Dark of the Moon beat out TDK.

Then show me. I dont see it. Making it sound like Marvel new and young. They been around for awhile themselves. Your right Marvel fans are young cause they sure do act like it by their insults. Anytime I say I am a fan of DC a Marvel fans got to make a comment to me about it.

Nothing wrong with being a Marvel or DC fan in my eyes. Just wish all the hating would stop. Let me also apologize for my statement about Marvel fans. I mean Marvel trolls. Not all Marvel fans are jerks to me. I meet some pretty cool ones. When i go to my comic book store and some special event happening I have pleasant conversations with them. Not online though. That cause their troll and they give real comicbook fans bad names. Like Harry Knowels from Aint it Cool. He on Fox payroll.

Now the new argument is that it was boring. It's a thought inducing film. Avengers had no storyline and expected you to stay glued to see all the effects which weren't that great except for hulk and the leviathan. That to me as a struggle. Just watching all the pretty lights basically. And I expected more out of Captain America, it never shook the dull feeling even when it seemed like it was building to do just that, that the dull was all a ruse, but it wasn't.

It's not like Batman movies have ever lacked action, and Nolan hasn't lacked depth. But I guess if youre gonna hate, you're gonna keep finding ssomething claim.

the question is actually very simple.
The tragedy in Colorado has only
affected the disclosure of any eventual box office record.
The Olympics only influence at
European level, as Americans
have 8-9 hours of time zone. In the long run every person who has really WANTED to see the film, will see it. In a couple of weeks there will be nothing to influence and we will see what excuse some
here will find. So far I've read dozens of people, who first preached that this film would have grossed more than the previous, splitting conveniently from "best movie ever, best gross" into "who cares, best trilogy"

I've seen it twice and enjoyed it. But Nolan got a little greedy. So many allegories(CIA rendition, blood diamonds, corporate greed, financial cricis, occupy wall street, fears on NFL stadium security, renewable energy, etc...)with little point or payoff. Its also hard for me to accept Bruce would completely burn his identity and hang out on the French Riveria while Gotham is still vulnerable. The guy lives to fight all crime, not just the super villians.

If I listed everything I like or dislike about Rises it would be a very long message so it's best to keep it simple..it's not a bad movie but it did not surpass the quality of the second film.

I'm both a comic book fan & movie fan, both need not be note for note the same..that would be boring.
Movies, just like comics, have some stories that are better than others & Rises was the least fulfilling of the trilogy.

Relax,Hollywood won't let Batman rest for long so we will get more & more from this character for many years to come.

Did you seriously delete my comment?! What crap. I say a couple of movies aren't very good and my comment is deleted because why? Is it offensive to someone? You've got Uncle Jimmy bashing the religion of millions and millions of people for over 2000 years, but that's okay! Don't dare say that Man of Steel is going to be a snooze fest!

Well thats a shame. Everyone I know has really really enjoyed it. Cinemascore of A, 87% and surpassing its budget in 2 weeks is still something to hang its hat on.

Why spidey 3 and X3 were so shitty and did so well, I dont know. But the 24 hour james holmes/dark knight rises news cycle is definitely not helping.

Its clearly not as good as TDK, but better than BB for me, which has a really dumb third act. 8.5/10 movie with 10/10 moments.

This felt like Nolans independent/arthouse roots came through more. Kudos to WB for letting Nolan give them balls.

242,011,359 domestic adding in the 17 million or so from Friday according to Box Office Mojo * When the international numbers come your looking at around or about 415,000,000 world wide, and still Sat and Sun to go, TDKR will bring in good numbers and average 400 and half million world wide by the end of the weekend. ** The Avengers at this time had already grossed over ** 270 million domestic *** So yes the TDKR is about 40 million behind the Avengers at this point, which given the lack of 3D sales is still not bad. It's only been one week, this movie will still be in theaters for months, with only a few good movies coming out in the next two months, and has yet to be shown in other foreign markets, this movie will be just fine.
